This comprehensive account examines the East Turkistan Islamic
Movement (ETIM)-the most significant Muslim militant group in
China-including its origins, objectives, ideology, leadership, and
tactics. To effectively engage China on counterterrorism issues, we
must understand the capabilities and intentions of the East
Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM), the most significant Muslim
militant group in China. The ETIM: China's Islamic Militants and
the Global Terrorist Threat is the first book to focus specifically
on the ETIM, a terrorist group that demands an independent Muslim
state for the Uyghur ethnic minority in northwest China. This
fascinating study offers a comprehensive account of the group's
origins, objectives, ideology, leadership, and tactics. It details
the historical and contemporary contexts of the Uyghur separatist
movement, the ETIM's alleged ties to international terrorist
networks, and the Chinese government's interest in promoting the
ETIM as a significant international problem. In addition, the book
addresses conflicting claims about the membership and viability of
the organization, noting where the Chinese government has
apparently manipulated information about the ETIM to suit its own
goals. A final chapter explores how various countries define ETIM
activities and what that means for relations with China. Includes
press releases issued by the Chinese government on violent Uyghur
separatism and presents timelines of the ETIM's attacks and other
activities and of major events in the history of Uyghur separatism
Offers a bibliography that compiles scholarly and news sources
pertaining to the ETIM and provides glossary of key terms derived
from the Chinese, Uyghur, and English languages
The study of the earth's climate requires reliable global data sets
to validate numerical simulation models and to identify regional
and global fluctuations and trends. This book presents ways to
obtain such data from space-borne and ground-based measurements,
both passive and active, over the entire electromagnetic spectrum.
It describes the basics of such methods together with the most
recent advancements and spans the field from clouds and the
planetary radiation budget to surface processes and ocean
properties. Each subject is backed by extensive reference lists to
enable readers to probe more deeply.
In the summer of 1969, as the Vietnam War was being turned over to
the South Vietnamese, Lieutenant John Raschke arrived in Chuong
Thien Province deep in the Mekong Delta, eager to have a positive
impact. Recounting his assignment to a provincial advisory team of
military and civilian personnel, this memoir depicts the ordinary
and the extraordinary of life both inside and outside the
wire--mortar attacks, firefights and snipers, hot showers, good
meals and comradery, the life and death struggles of the Vietnamese
people and the bonds he formed with them.
The Power of New Urban Tourism explores new forms of tourism in
urban areas with their social, political, cultural, architectural
and economic implications. By investigating various showcases of
New Urban Tourism within its social and spatial frames, the book
offers insights into power relations and connections between
tourism and cityscapes in various socio-spatial settings around the
world. Contributors to the volume show how urban space has become a
battleground between local residents and visitors, with changing
perceptions of tourists as co-users of public and private urban
spaces and as influencers of the local economies. This includes
different roles of digital platforms as resources for access to the
city and touristic opportunities as well as ways to organise and
express protest or shifting representations of urban space. With
contemporary cases from a wide disciplinary spectrum, the
contributors investigate the power of New Urban Tourism in Africa,
Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania. This focus allows a
cross-cultural evaluation of New Urban Tourism and its dynamic, and
changing conception transforming and subverting cities and tourism
alike. The Power of New Urban Tourism will be of great interest to
academics, researchers and students in the fields of cultural
studies, sociology, the political sciences, economics, history,
human geography, urban design and planning, architecture, ethnology
and anthropology.
Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not
used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad

In recent years, the powerful social, cultural and economic changes wrought by digital technology have led many to forecast the end of the university as we know it. This book, for the first time, employs extensive research and case studies to explain why these predictions, even if perhaps somewhat premature, are on solid ground. The Digital Revolution and the Coming of the Postmodern University shows how the Internet, high-speed electronic communications, and personal computers necessitate a radical rethinking of what is meant by 'higher education'. The book calls into question both the traditionalist's scepticism about the benefits of new technology and the corporate e-learning advocate's failure to grasp that education is more than what happens on a computer screen. The author provides concrete data and models for more democratic, restructured systems of instruction that not only take advantage of advanced learning technologies, but promote the globalisation of higher education. This is an essential read for anyone concerned about the future of higher education.

Water is the most effective agent in the climate system to modulate
energy transfer by radiative processes, through its exchanges of
latent heat and within cascades of chemical processes. It is the
source of all life on earth, and once convective clouds are formed,
it enables large vertical transports of momentum, heat and various
atmospheric constituents up to levels above the tropical
tropopause. Water triggers very complex processes at the earth's
continental surfaces and within the oceans. At last, water in its
gaseous phase is the most important greenhouse-gas! Numerical
modelling and measurements of the state of the present climate
system needs a very thorough understanding of all these processes
and their various interactions and forcings. This is a prerequisite
for more substantial forecasts of future states in all scales of
time, from days to centuries. Therefore, the management of the
World Climate Research Programme established in 1988 the new
programme GEWEX (Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment). GEWEX
is specifically defined to determine the energy and water
transports in the fast components of the climate system with the
presently available modelling and measurement means and to provide
new capabilities for the future. Research in GEWEX must further
develop methods to determine the influence of climatic anomalies on
available water resources.
This set of conference papers covers such topics as: the need for
water to maintain life; the atmospheric water vapour in all layers
of the troposphere; the measurement of cloud water contents and the
partitionof its liquid and solid phases; and land and ocean
nutrients.

This book constitutes the proceedings of the 8th International
Conference on Rigorous State-Based Methods, ABZ 2021, which was
planned to take place in Ulm, Germany, during June 6-11, 2021. The
conference changed to an online format due to the COVID-19
pandemic. The 6 full and 8 short papers included in this volume
were carefully reviewed and selected from 18 submissions. The
proceedings also include 3 PhD symposium contributions. They deal
with state-based and machine-based formal methods, mainly Abstract
State Machines (ASM), Alloy, B, TLA+, VDM, and Z.
This book uses a variety of applications to illustrate a modeling
method that helps practitioners to manage complex
software-intensive systems. The proposed method relies on the
combination of its abstraction concept and its operational
character, with behavioral models in the precise and simple form of
Abstract State Machines (ASMs). The book introduces both the
modeling method (Part I) and the available tool support (Part II):
In Part I the authors detail (using numerous examples) how to
construct, explain, debug, explore, extend and reuse accurate
system design models, starting from scratch. Only an elementary
knowledge of common mathematical (including set-theoretic) notation
and some basic experience with computational processes (systems,
programs, algorithms) is assumed. Part II then shows how the
modeling method can be supported by implementing tools that make
design models executable and debuggable. To illustrate how to
build, debug and maintain systems and to explain their construction
in a checkable manner, a general, problem-oriented refinement
method is adopted to construct system models from components. The
method starts with abstract models and refines them step by step,
incrementally adding further details that eventually lead to code.
Intended for practitioners who build software intensive systems,
and students specializing in software engineering, it can be used
both for self-study and for teaching, and it can serve as a
reference book. Exercises are included to help readers check their
understanding of the explained concepts. For many models defined in
the book, refinements to executable versions can be downloaded for
experimental validation from the book's website at

Neoliberalism has become the operative buzzword among pundits and
academics to characterise an increasingly dysfunctional global
political economy. It is often - wrongly - identified exclusively
with free market fundamentalism and illiberal types of cultural
conservatism. Combining penetrating argument and broad-ranging
scholarship, Carl Raschke shows what the term really means, how it
evolved and why it has been so misunderstood. He lays out how the
present new world disorder, signalled by the election of Trump and
Brexit, derives less from the ascendancy of reactionary forces and
more from the implosion of the post-Cold War effort to establish a
progressive international moral and political order for the cynical
benefit of a new cosmopolitan knowledge class, mimicking the
so-called civilising mission of 19th-century European colonialists.

Alle reden von Strategie, aber kaum jemand fragt, was dahinter
steckt.
entfaltet: Strategiefahigkeit, Strategiebildung, strategische
Steuerung. Dem schliessen sich Fallstudien zu strategischer Politik
in der Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland an, die die
systematischen Zusammenhange illustrieren und zugleich das
weitreichende Potential von Strategieanalysen unter Beweis
stellen."
In den verschiedenartigsten Geraten, automatischen Vorrichtungen
und Maschinen gehoren Federn, Membranen, Faltenbalge, Geber u. a.
zu den wichtigsten Elementen, die deren Betriebscharakteristika,
Zu- verlasslgkeit sowie Lebensdauer in entscheidendem MaBe
bestimmen. Zur Herstellung elastischer Elemente gelangt eine
bedeutende Anzahl von NE-Metallen, einschlieBlich der Edelmetalle,
zum Einsatz, nach- dem diese unterschiedlichen
Verfestigungsbehandlungen unterzogen worden sind (z. B. der
Aushartung oder Dispersionshartung, der thermo- mechanischen und
chemothermischen Behandlung).
