Precious stones, gems and crystals have been valued throughout
history not only for their rarity and expense, but for their
mystical properties too. Garnet is rumoured to stimulate the heart,
while the pearl offers the protection of the goddess Diana –
coral, so-called 'witch-stone', is said to guard against the evil
eye, and amethyst is said to prevent drunkenness. Gem Magic guides
the reader through the uses of and stories surrounding a cornucopia
of stones. Introducing the inherent properties of dazzling
selection of gems, gemologist Raymond Walters describes how each
stone is formed and its key properties, what beliefs have been
associated with them through history and around the world, and both
their scientific and occult uses. Famous stones, both real and
mythical, are lyrically described – from the infamous Koh-i-Noor
diamond to unicorn horn and bezoar.
A poor uneducated mill worker in his youth, whose driving passion
was the study of astronomy, John Brashear lived to be designated
"first citizen of Pennsylvania" for his scientific and
philanthropic accomplishments, honored not only in his native
Pittsburgh but by scientists all over the world. This is a
biography of Brashear, the instrument maker and educator, whose
life was one of genuinely inspiring achievement and service.

Raymond Walters, Jr. presents the definitive biography of Albert
Gallatin (1761-1849), recounting sixty years that the Swiss-born
diplomat served his adopted country as a congressional leader,
Secretary of the Treasury, financier, and ambassador. Gallatin was
a founder of the House Committee on Finance (later the Ways and
Means Committee), a member of the new Democratic-Republican Party,
and an active politician who opposed the Federalist Party and its
programs, while also helping to bring about the election of Thomas
Jefferson.
