Fixed Prosthodontics is the branch of Prosthodontics that deals
with replacement of missing tooth or teeth and associated
structures by means of prosthesis that can't be removed by the
patient Biologically acceptable fixed Prosthodontic treatment
demands that prepared teeth be protected and stabilized with
provisional restorations that resemble the form and function of the
definitive Prosthesis. They are essential in the maintenance of
periodontal health and protection of pulp from thermal insult. This
is especially useful with treatment involving esthetic need of the
patient. Variety of materials and techniques are available for
fabrication of temporary fixed prosthesis. It may be preformed or
customized. It is the choice of the Prosthodontist to select an
appropriate material and technique to fabricate the interim
restoration based on the clinical presentation and patients need.
Recent materials and advanced techniques are described here with
illustrated pictures in a very simple, easy to understand and self
explanatory manner. This book may be a useful guide for
undergraduates, postgraduate students, laboratory assistants as
well as clinicians
The word esthetics is derived from the Greek word "AISTHETIKOS"
meaning perceptive. It pertains to the sense of beautiful or the
science which deduces from nature and taste, the rules and
principles of art. The term esthetic was coined in 1750 to
designate the science of sensuous knowledge which gave beauty in
contrast to the science of logic which gave truth. The most
important consideration during complete denture construction is the
restoration of last esthetics. Esthetics goes much further than the
mere placement of the teeth on the occlusal rims, size, shape,
color of artificial teeth and denture bases are important in
construction of an esthetic denture. Different people have
expressed different opinion for making esthetically pleasing
dentures. Young stressed the importance of corresponding face from
and tooth form. Devan & Earl Pound have emphasized the
importance of corresponding selection, placement & position of
artificial teeth in order to make natural looking dentures.
Successful application of preservative dentistry principles should
lead to maximum conservation of sound tooth structure, minimal use
of anesthetic, minimal pain, a reduced risk for endodontic
treatment, tooth extraction and an increase in the mean survival
time of affected teeth.Restorative idea described here is an
innovative, largely painless, minimal intervention approach for
restoring lost dental structures, particularly in outreach
situations where highly trained dental personnel and facilities
needed and clinical equipments are not readily available or
affordable. There is worldwide interest in and increasing usage of
conservative approach for the restoration of primary and permanent
teeth. Present book has described self explanatory, biological
friendly, inexpensive, less time consuming approach with higher
success rate and minimal complications. This book is useful for
students, practitioners, researchers teachers and oral care
workers.
The delivery of care for patients missing one or all of their teeth
very often requires implants to restore function, esthetics, hard
and soft tissue contours, speech, and intraoral health. The delayed
occlusal loading protocol, either 1- or 2-stage approach, has been
evaluated for more than 30 years by a number of clinical settings
and situations. However, in some patient conditions, the delayed
healing process can cause psychological, social, and/or functional
problems. A full range of treatment options relative to the initial
hard and soft tissue healing is available. Immediate restoration of
a patient after implant surgery is one of these alternatives. A
benefit/risk ratio must be assessed for each patient condition to
ascertain whether immediate occlusal loading is a worthwhile
alternative. The greater the benefit and/or the lower the risk, the
more likely immediate loading is to be considered. Present book is
a very useful tool for the students, practitioners, academicians
and all those who are concerned with dental implants as the best
choice for a missing dentition.
