Vision is our primary sensory modality, and we are naturally
curious as to how the visual system assembles. The visual system is
in many ways remarkably simple, a repeating assemblage of neurons
and support cells that parse the visual field through precision and
redundancy. Through this simplicity the eye has often led the way
in our exploration of how an organ is assembled. Eye development
has therefore long been a favorite for exploring mechanisms of cell
fate choice, patterning and cell signaling.
This volume, which is part of the Current Topics in
Developmental Biology series, highlights the exceptional advances
over the past 20 years. Chapters emphasize our knowledge of
transcription factors and how these generate networks to direct the
eye field and associated structures. Topics such as cell fate
specification are also explored, along with the potential of
Drosophila as a model for lens formation and the progress made in
using the Drosophila eye to examine planar cell polarity.

Review of our current state of knowledge
Chapters written by authors with a new generation approach that
takes a more systems approach to identifying factors and better
defines cell subtypes
The book presents a systematic and compact treatment of the
qualitative theory of half-linear
differential equations. It contains the most updated and
comprehensive material and represents the first attempt to present
the results of the rapidly developing theory of half-linear
differential equations in a unified form. The main topics covered
by the book are oscillation and asymptotic theory and the theory of
boundary value problems associated with half-linear equations, but
the book also contains a treatment of related topics like PDE s
with p-Laplacian, half-linear difference equations and various more
general nonlinear differential equations.
- The first complete treatment of the qualitative theory of
half-linear differential equations.
- Comparison of linear and half-linear theory.
- Systematic approach to half-linear oscillation and asymptotic
theory.
- Comprehensive bibliography and index.
- Useful as a reference book in the topic.
Enlargement and treaty reform have moved Europe's constitutional
debate into the political spotlight. This important new text
outlines the main themes of constitutional debate in the EU,
analyzes formal and informal constitution-building since the early
days of European integration, and introduces the actors and
structures behind treaty change.
How have EU-level actors responded to the increase in salience and
contestation across the member states? This volume explores and
explains the actors’ strategic responses and emphasises that
domestic pressure has triggered both depoliticisation and
politicisation. Long gone are the times when EU decisions left
citizens indifferent, and when the supranational was largely
irrelevant for public opinion and electoral politics across the
member states. Instead, a string of existential crises has struck
and unsettled the Union over more than a decade. These crises have
politicised Europe, tested the endurance of the supranational
system to its core, and put EU-level actors under unprecedented
pressure. This volume explores how and why EU-level actors respond
to the various, sometimes competing, ‘bottom-up’ demands, and
challenges the view that domestic contestation necessarily limits
EU-level room for manoeuvre. Instead, contributions show that
domestic pressure can be perceived as either constraining or
enabling, with responses, therefore, ranging from the restrained to
the assertive. Driven by the survival of the Union, by the
preservation of their own powers, and by different perceptions of
domestic demands, actors will choose to politicise or depoliticise
decision-making, behaviour, and policy outcomes at the
supranational level. The volume concludes that whilst domestic
pressure triggers supranational responses, such responses should
not be assumed to be restraining; they may equally be empowering
including for European integration itself. The chapters in this
book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of
European Public Policy.
Originally published in 1964, and extensively illustrated with
figures and charts, this volume gives an overview of both physical
and human geography of the former USSR. The role that the geography
of the country has played in shaping historical events and
political forces is discussed, as is its role in the economy of the
Soviet Union. The geography is examined by topics and regional
differences explained within this framework. The book looks at some
of the major problems posed by geographical conditions and how they
have been tackled and as far as data allows, the success or failure
of measures has been assessed.

notwendigen Rahmenbedingungen stimmen.
Die Autoren und Autorinnen der Beitrage stellen Forschungsprojekte
zu Selbstandigkeit fordernden und kooperativen Arbeitsformen in
unterschiedlichen Fachern und Klassenstufen vor. Im Mittelpunkt
stehen sechs Beitrage qualitativ-rekonstruktiver Forschung zur
Interaktion zwischen Schulern bzw. Schulern und Lehrern im
Klassenraum."
