Essays on aspects of the natural world, its heritage, and how best
to preserve it. Europe's engagement from the late sixteenth century
onwards in scientific Earth science inquiry has generated numerous
and varied collections of minerals, rocks, and fossils, together
with their associated archives, artworks and publications, forming
a rich cultural geoheritage held in major private and especially
royal and aristocratic collections, museums, universities, archives
and libraries. The mines, quarries, geological structures,
landforms, minerals, rocks and fossils - or geodiversity - that
underpin these collections populate past and present-day Earth
science literature. However, for too long their scientific,
historic and cultural significance was not universally recognised
and generally they were not accorded adequate resources and
protection - or geoconservation. Hence, geotourism was developed in
the 1990s to raise public awareness of Europe's geoheritage and
geodiversity and to promote itsgeoconservation; the volume's
theoretical essays and case studies examine these four core
geoelements and provide a timely introduction for anyone interested
in natural history museums, countryside management, and
landscape-basedtourism. Dr Thomas A. Hose is an Honorary Research
Associate in the School of Earth Sciences, University of Bristol.
He has pioneered the recognition of and research into geotourism,
and is the author of the world's first doctoral thesis on the
subject. Contributors: Kevin Crawford, Peter Davis, John E. Gordon.

Urological Emergencies in Clinical Practice summarizes adult and
paediatric urological emergencies and their management - diagnosis
and treatment, in a concise, relevant and readily available form.
Signs and symptoms are listed and specific treatments explained.
This is a simple yet practical guide to the management of
urological emergencies with an emphasis on common urological
emergencies seen in everyday practice. Any clinician without
previous urological knowledge will be able to make an accurate
diagnosis and have a treatment plan to follow. A user-friendly
pocketbook, this is easy to refer to in an emergency situation.
Each chapter is clearly marked, separated and organised into
sections with Heading of signs, symptoms, diagnosis and management
placed in a numbered fashion similar to an Objective structured
clinical examination. Some sections also have useful hints and
tips. Covering the basics of treatment rather than going into
depth, these small but very important aspects of care are usually
not mentioned in big reference textbooks, yet form an important
aspect in everyday life. Aimed at residents in Urology, it will
also be useful to Accident and Emergency doctors and P
From New York Times bestselling author Sylvain Reynard comes the
first novel in the Gabriel's Inferno series, a haunting,
unforgettable tale of one man's salvation and one woman's sensual
awakening-NOW A FILM FROM PASSIONFLIX! Enigmatic and sexy,
Professor Gabriel Emerson is a well-respected Dante specialist by
day, but by night he devotes himself to an uninhibited life of
pleasure. He uses his notorious good looks and sophisticated charm
to gratify his every whim, but is secretly tortured by his dark
past and consumed by the profound belief that he is beyond all hope
of redemption. When the sweet and innocent Julia Mitchell enrolls
as his graduate student, his attraction and mysterious connection
to her not only jeopardizes his career, but sends him on a journey
in which his past and his present collide. An intriguing and sinful
exploration of seduction, forbidden love, and redemption, Gabriel's
Inferno is a captivating and wildly passionate tale of one man's
escape from his own personal hell as he tries to earn the
impossible-forgiveness and love.
Torn Modernism illuminates an important moment in the history of
the Kunstmuseum Basel's collection. In 1937 the Nazi cultural
policy denounced thousands of works as "degenerate" and forcibly
removed from German museums. The Third Reich's Ministry of
Propaganda correctly assumed that a portion of such works would
find buyers abroad, in this way certain artworks deemed
"internationally exploitable" reached the art market via various
channels. Georg Schmidt (1896-1966), the museum's director at the
time, managed in 1939 to acquire the Painting Animal Destinies by
Franz Marc (1880-1916) and twenty avant-garde masterpieces all at
once. In the catalogue, renowned experts trace the events based on
the seizures in German museums and explain the historical contexts.
The actors of the institutions and the art market are presented,
and the Nazi regime's act of cultural violence is revealed, which
resulted in an artificial fragmentation of Modernism into art that
was "exploitable" on the one hand, and art that had been destroyed
or forgotten on the other. Contributions on the auction of the
Galerie Fischer in Lucerne, on Georg Schmidt's approach, and on the
classification of the acquisitions in the context of Basel's
collection history bring specific Swiss aspects into focus.
The third book in the wildly romantic Gabriel's Inferno series by
Sylvain Reynard, following on from Gabriel's Inferno and Gabriel's
Rapture. Professor Gabriel Emerson has left his position at the
University of Toronto to embark on a new life with his beloved
Julianne. Together, he's confident that they can face any
challenge. But Julianne's graduate program threatens Gabriel's
plans for their life together, as the pressures of being a student
become all consuming. When she is given the honour of presenting an
academic lecture at Oxford, several individuals from their past
appear, including an old nemesis intent on humiliating Julia and
exposing one of Gabriel's darkest secrets. In an effort to confront
his remaining demons, Gabriel begins a quest to discover more about
his biological parents - a search that has startling repercussions
for himself and for Julianne. Sylvain Reynard is a Canadian writer
with an interest in Renaissance art and culture and an inordinate
attachment to the city of Florence. Sylvain's previous novels in
this series, Gabriel's Inferno and Gabriel's Rapture, are also
published by Penguin.
Gabriel's Inferno is the first in this intoxicating trilogy
featuring Gabriel and Julia, following their sensual journey of
forbidden love - with all the obsessive yearning of Twilight with
the intensity of Fifty Shades of Grey. One man's salvation, one
woman's sensual awakening . . . Gabriel Emerson is a man tortured
by his dark past. A highly respected university professor, Gabriel
uses his notorious good looks and charm to lead a secret life of
pleasure where nothing is out of bounds. Sweet and innocent, Julia
Mitchell enrols as Gabriel's graduate student and his immediate
attraction to her, and their powerful and strange connection,
threatens to derail his career. Wildly passionate and sinful,
Gabriel's Inferno is an exploration of the intense power of
forbidden love. Sylvain Reynard is a Canadian writer with an
interest in Renaissance art and culture and an inordinate
attachment to the city of Florence.
Following recent high profile cases of surgical error in the Uk and
USA, patient safety has become a key issue in healthcare, now
placed at the heart of junior doctor's training. Errors made by
doctors are very similar to those made in other high risk
organizations, such as aviation, nuclear and petrochemical
industries. Practical Patient Safety aims to demonstrate how core
principles of safety from these industries can be applied in
surgical and medical practice, in particular through training for
health care professionals and healthcare managers.
While theoretical aspects of risk management form the backdrop, the
book focuses on key techniques and principles of patient safety in
a practical way, giving the reader practical advice on how to avoid
personal errors, and more importantly, how to start patient safety
training within his or her department or hospital.
For the last 20 years there has been a growing interest in the
geosciences for topics related to geoheritage: geoconservation,
geotourism and geoparks. Geoheritage: Assessment, Protection, and
Management is the first and only reference book to cover these main
topics as well as the relationship of geoheritage to other subjects
such as landscapes, conservation, and tourism. The book also
includes methodologies for assessment, mapping, and visualisation,
along with case studies and colour images of some of the most
important global geosites. This book is an essential resource for
geoscientists, park and geopark managers, tourism and regional
planning managers, as well as university students interested in
geoheritage, geosites, geomorphosites, geoconservation, and
geotourism. It also includes critical information on UNESCO's
Global Geoparks, World Heritage and Biosphere Reserve sites,
national parks and protected areas in general, land-use planning
and nature conservation policies, and in the general contribution
of geodiversity for sustainable development.
