Teaching Aboriginal Studies has been a practical guide for
classroom teachers in primary and secondary schools, as well as
student teachers, across Australia. Chapters on Aboriginal history
and culture, stereotypes and racism, government policies and
reconciliation provide essential knowledge for integrating
Aboriginal history and culture, issues and perspectives across the
curriculum. This second edition of Teaching Aboriginal Studies
encompasses developments over the past decade in Aboriginal
affairs, Aboriginal education and research. It features a wide
range of valuable teaching sources including poetry, images, oral
histories, media, and government reports. There are also strategies
for teaching Aboriginal Studies in different contexts and the
latest research findings. The text is lavishly illustrated with
photographs, posters, paintings, prints, ads and cartoons. Teaching
Aboriginal Studies is the product of consultation and collaboration
across Australia. Remarkable educators and achievers, both
Aboriginal and other Australians, tell what teachers need to know
and do to help Aboriginal students reach their potential, educate
all students about Aboriginal Australia and make this country all
that we can be. 'The importance of this book cannot be
overestimated. We have been insisting for years that pre-service
teachers be required to learn about Aboriginal history, culture and
identity, and that it be regarded as integral to qualifying for
their education degrees.' Lionel Bamblett, General Manager,
Victorian Aboriginal Education Association Inc.

More Indigenous Australians are realizing their potential but many
remain significantly disadvantaged compared to other Australians on
all socio-economic indicators and one of the most disadvantaged
peoples in the world. Increasing successful outcomes in Indigenous
Higher Education is recognized as vital in addressing this
disadvantage and closing the gap by creating a new generation of
Indigenous Australians armed with a tertiary education. Whilst
there is widespread agreement that disadvantage needs to be
addressed and success achieved for Indigenous Australians,
effective solutions remain elusive. This volume offers diverse
analyses and research-derived new solutions for seeding success.
The volume presents informed opinion underpinned by demonstrated
theory, research, and practice and is written in an engaging and
accessible style that will advance understandings of contemporary
issues and point the way forward to seeding success. Encompassing a
collation of chapters from leading researchers and thinkers, this
book illuminates the complexity of Indigenous Higher Education
issues and serves to identify successful solutions that have
important international implications.

International Advances in Education: Global Initiatives for Equity
and Social Justice is an international research monograph of
scholarly works that are seeking to advance knowledge and
understanding of a diverse range of Indigenous or First Peoples
across the globe. With the overarching emphasis being towards
education, this collection of works outlines the unique history,
policy, and lived experiences of Indigenous peoples within
education systems around the world. The volume itself is split into
three sections that offer: (i) an overview of the past and current
educational conditions of Indigenous peoples; (ii) policy and
practice aimed at enhancing cultural inclusiveness and resisting
deculturalization, and (iii) finally the identification of
pedagogical factors that may be important for the educational
progress of a diversity of Indigenous students. Overall, this
volume will act as a valuable source for those seeking to maintain
and restore Indigenous cultures and languages within the education
system, as well as identifying other methods and practices that may
increase the engagement and resilience of Indigenous students
within a variety of education settings. As a result, this
collection of works will be a valuable tool for educators,
researchers, policy makers, and school counselors who may be
seeking to further understand the experiences of Indigenous
students within the education system.
Why are so many Aboriginal Australians still disadvantaged? Why is
so much potential still wasted? Why is 'the Aboriginal problem'
still intractable? Why can we not even agree on the causes, let
alone ways forward? Why have billions on special programs had such
little effect? Is it all bad news? How can we: realise the talents
of all Australia's Aboriginal citizens, eradicate disadvantage,
grow Aboriginal success, and achieve at last the real potential of
this country? In Black and White: Australians All at the Crossroads
seeks to illuminate the issues through perspectives of concerned
blackfellas and whitefellas, both, on root causes, how issues play
out on the ground, and what needs to be done. It is the hope of the
editors that experiences and ideas, from the community base to the
heights of policy, may reveal the common ground that is
sine-qua-non to working out real answers and practical programs
that will make a difference. As the subtitle's reference to our
National Anthem suggests, all Australians - that's all of us - must
put an end to the wastage of Indigenous talent and the denial of
the real Australia that has diminished our nation far too long.
Aussies can do anything. Together we can't lose
