Die wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Errungenschaften August Kekules bestehen in der Ausarbeitung der Valenztheorie und der damit einhergehenden strukturellen Darstellung des Benzolringes. Die dadurch gewonnenen Kekule'schen Strukturformeln dienten oftmals als Fundament fur zahlreiche weitere Innovationen in der Chemie. In diesem Werk beschreibt der Autor Versuche aus verschiedenen Laboratorien von wichtigen Chemikern weltweit. Auch wenn Kekule im Mittelpunkt der Betrachtungen steht, fallen Namen wie John Stenhouse oder Justus Liebig. Versuchsbeschreibungen und Theorien werden zum Teil in Originalsprache dargelegt.
