The Parliamentary Diary of Sir Richard Cocks 1698-1702 (Hardcover): Richard Cocks The Parliamentary Diary of Sir Richard Cocks 1698-1702 (Hardcover)
Richard Cocks; Edited by D. W. Hayton
R4,253 Discovery Miles 42 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sir Richard Cocks, a Gloucestershire country gentleman, was a new and enthusiastic member of the Parliament which began in 1698. His diary is the only substantial parliamentary diary yet to have been discovered between Narcissus Luttrell and Anchitell Grey's reports of debates in the early 1690s and Sir Edward Knatchbull's in the 1720s. It covers the four parliamentary sessions of 1698-1702, in which vital questions of state were decided and significant developments took place in the evolution of English party politics. Cocks showed keen appreciation of the drama and significance of the events of which he was a witness and his diary offers a unique insight into events in the Commons. Unlike other diarists, he also showed a keen interest in the details of parliamentary procedure. This important journal, previously unpublished, has now been meticulously edited by D. W. Hayton. Fully annotated, with a detailed introduction and appendices, it is a major source for the political and parliamentary history of the period.

Richard Cocke
R1,076 Discovery Miles 10 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This title was first published in 2001: Paolo Veronese: Piety and Display in an Age of Religious Reform examines the large body of religious paintings with which Veronese (1528 -1588) played a crucial role in shaping Venetian piety. With 117 illustrations (26 in colour) Richard Cocke sets Veronese's work into context, arguing his mastery of narrative has long been neglected, largely as a result of Sir Joshua Reynolds's criticism in his Discourses. The new expressiveness of Veronese's work in his final decade is linked with the decrees of the Council of Trent, which resulted in an enhanced display of paintings in Venetian palaces during the 1570s, matched by the renewed decorative schemes in the city's churches.

The publications of the Hakluyt Society (founded in 1846) made available edited (and sometimes translated) early accounts of exploration. The first series, which ran from 1847 to 1899, consists of 100 books containing published or previously unpublished works by authors from Christopher Columbus to Sir Francis Drake, and covering voyages to the New World, to China and Japan, to Russia and to Africa and India. Volumes 66 and 67 of the series, edited by E. M Thompson and first published in 1883, contain the bulk of the diary of Richard Cocks (c.1565 1624), supplemented by a selection of letters. Cocks was the head of a trading post established in Japan by the British East India Company from its foundation in 1613 until 1622, when it went out of business. His diary describes Japanese society and culture in the early seventeenth century, as well as the activities of British merchants there.
