This book brings together the recent cutting-edge work on computational methods in photonics and their applications. The latest advances in techniques such as the Discontinuous Galerkin Time Domain method, Finite Element Time Domain method, Finite Difference Time Domain method as well as their applications are presented. Key aspects such as modelling of non-linear effects (Second Harmonic Generation, lasing in fibers, including gain nonlinearity in metamaterials), the acousto-optic effect, and the hydrodynamic model to explain electron response in nanoplasmonic structures are included. The application areas covered include plasmonics, metamaterials, photonic crystals, dielectric waveguides, fiber lasers. The chapters give a representative survey of the corresponding area.
This book provides an overview of the underlying physics and technology of modern waveguide optoelectronics. By presenting these two aspects together in a coherent manner, readers will gain an appreciation of the fundamental physical limits to device performance as well as a critical understanding of the state of the art. Starting from the fundamental optical properties of matter, the book moves on to describe methods of device design, with an emphasis on low dimensional systems. The potential of III-IV semiconductors is highlighted because of their ability to incorporate lasers, waveguides, modulators and detectors. However, other technologies - principally lithium niobate and fibre devices - are studied and contrasted. The role of nonlinear optics and femtosecond pulses within the framework of waveguide optics is evaluated. Optical fibre devices show considerable promise in a range of systems applications and such devices are discussed and compared with planar devices. Finally, progress towards photonic and optoelectronic integrated circuits is addressed.
The NATO Advanced Study on Waveguide Optoelectronics was held at the Kelvin Conference Centre in Glasgow, Scotland, between 30 July and 10 August 1990. In aliSO students and 15 lecturers attended the ASI. The successof the meeting was due not only to the high quality of the presentations but also to the enthusiasm ofall the participants and their willingness to take part in the discussion and poster sessions. 1990 was also the year in which Glasgow was the European City of Culture. This resulted in interesting diversions during the middle weekend of the school and also made the meeting probably the first NATO ASI to share accommodation with the Bolshoi Opera and Ballet who gave memorable performances as partof the City's celebrations. This volume is, however, intended to be more than merely a record of presentations at the NATO meeting. The authors have written their material so as to be approachable by a first degree graduate with some background in optoelectronics. The principal materials considered are the III-V semiconductors, lithium niobate and silica. Recent developments towards optoelectronic integration in semiconductors, developments in devices fabricated in doped silica and doped lithium niobate, and developments in all-optical switching networks are highlighted. The role of reduced dimensional structures is examined in some detail."
