A true love story of how two people met as childhood sweethearts,
and managed to get over so many stepping stones growing up but
remained as one never letting go or forgetting what brought them
together in the first place. A story of tragic loss and how Ric
Hart moved through grief finding inner strength, resilience and
hope for his future and all that shall come, sharing all the steps
he took to find peace and acceptance whilst managing the loss of a
soul mate, best friend, wife and lover.
Thirty-three-year-old Leslie Moreau, mother of twins, is recovering
from a nasty divorce. During the last four years, she's established
her own small business, Transitions Consulting, a firm that
provides rehabilitation consulting services for the automobile
industry. Leslie maintains a solid relationship with Tobian
Government Insurance, one of her largest accounts. Life and work
are on the right track. But Leslie begins to worry when she has to
fire Martin Lavallee, the first employee she hired when her
business began to take off. She discovers that he's been
undermining her business and plans to leave her firm and take
referrals with him. The situation gets worse when Martin files a
wrongful dismissal lawsuit. While Leslie fights this, those in
power at Tobian begin to harass her. She fears for her business and
the welfare of her seven employees. "Egos and Arrogance" tells
Leslie's story as she struggles to get out from underneath the
exploitation of a huge and powerful corporation. To overcome this
obstacle, Leslie confronts the memories of this same type of
treatment she received as a child. Juggling the emotions of both
experiences, Leslie must stay mentally strong to keep from losing
everything she has worked to obtain.

Communication and Contradiction in the NCAA: An Unlevel Playing
Field is a critical examination of the contradictory nature of the
NCAA, and how the inherent contradictions impact the communication
activities of its constituents, supporters, and challengers. At the
heart of the NCAA is the student-athlete, born out of an idealistic
collection of communal values that is often at odds with
institutional practices. The rhetorical negotiation of the
student-athlete's identity informs and confuses communication
practices on a number of levels, from interpersonal interactions to
organizational apologia. Because the student-athlete is critical to
maintaining the collegiate athletics orientation, the NCAA works
overtime in promoting, maintaining, and defending it in the face of
public scrutiny. The NCAA and its member institutions, like any
organization, are compelled to answer public accusations, often
working to defend inconsistent policies to an increasingly hostile
audience. In an effort to solidify its power, the NCAA uses public
discourse to maintain its position by establishing and enforcing
proper codes of conduct for participants, and rationalizing unfair
labor practices, athletics budgets, and rising tuition costs
designed to boost athletics. In response they often rely on
familiar rhetorical and organizational practices, such as branding,
mascots, and heroic stories of student-athletes, all of which come
with issues of their own. All of these communication phenomena,
from interpersonal support-seeking to organizational scapegoating,
are informed by the central student-athlete mythos. This puts the
NCAA at a contradictory crossroads as they work to reconcile
inconsistent practices and messages.

Nonlinear optical studies of periodic dielectric structures have blossomed in the past two decades. New fabrication techniques are producing fiber grating and multidimensional photonic crystals in materials where the refractive index can be varied by light pulses and beams. Gap solitons that can propagate at any velocity from zero to the speed of light and spatial solitons that prevent the diffractive spread of light in waveguide arrays are two examples of the new phenomena described in this book. Microstructured optical fibers allow control of the guided mode dispersion for broadband light generation and new soliton phenomena. Many new materials and structures are being developed that will impact new optical devices with applications in optical communications and optical data processing. All the above topics are addressed in detail in this book.

This book presents ethnographic data and analysis in eight case
studies from several very diverse industries. It covers a wide
range of topics, from the role of women and community in strikes to
the importance of place in organization, and addresses global
concerns with studies from Mexico and Malawu. Union-organized
workplaces consistently afford workers higher wages and better
pensions, benefits, and health coverage than their non-union
counterparts. In addition, women and minorities who belong to
unions are more likely to receive higher wages and benefits than
their non-union peers. Given the economic advantages of union
membership, one might expect to see higher rates of organization
across industries, but labour affiliation is at an all-time low.
What accounts for this discrepancy? The contributors in this volume
provide a variety of perspectives on this paradox, including
discussions of approaches to and findings on the histories,
cultures, and practices of organized labour. They also address
substantive issues such as race, class, gender, age, generation,
ethnicity, health and safety concerns, corporate co-optation of
unions, and the cultural context of union-management relationships.
The first to bring together anthropological case studies of labour
unions, this volume will appeal to cultural anthropologists, social
scientists, sociologists, and those interested in labour studies
and labour movements.
Richart's bio-bibliography is a most welcome addition to the
literature. For the first time, Richart has made available a
comprehensive bibliography, discography, and up-to-date worklist.
Ligeti's writings, writings about Ligeti, and reviews and analyses
of his works, mainly after his 1956 flight from Hungary to the
West, are listed and annotated. . . . Richart's short, concise
biography is informative and well written. . . . Highly recommended
for public, college, and university libraries with music
collections. Choice Gyorgy Ligeti is one of the most significant of
contemporary composers. Most often described as innovative, he has
been able to combine beauty and emotional meaning with that
innovation. This bio-bibliography describes rather than evaluates
the considerable body of writings by and about Ligeti. The book is
divided into four sections: biography, worklist, discography, and
bibliography. The biography is a brief survey designed to acquaint
the reader, if necessary, with the basic and widely available facts
of Ligeti's life. The bibliography is divided into two parts:
writings by Ligeti and writings about him. The largest section in
the latter part consists of concert and record reviews. Cross
references link all items dealing with each individual music work.
An appendix lists, in chronological order, all of the concerts
devoted entirely to works by Ligeti. Writings listed in the
bibliography are dated from the 1940s onward. The bulk of the
material was written after Ligeti's flight to the west in 1956.
This first book-length work on Gyorgy Ligeti will be welcomed by
music scholars.
Oral Pathology as part of the Head and Neck Pathology is an
interdisciplinary field of science. The oral mucosa and the saliva
are reflectors of many systemic diseases of the organism and
therefore valuable parameters of the diagnosis and prognosis of
pathological processes. In the last years many new methods have
been integrated in the diagnostic repertoire. Proliferation markers
are of predicitive value and characterize the biological behavior
of a tumor. Markers are such as oncogenes, growth factor receptors
or genetic aberrations. The importance of these new markers shall
be discussed concerning the different types of oral cancers and
salivary gland tumours.

This book differs from others in the Histological Typing series by including more clinical aspects and by concentrating on cancer and precancer of the oral mucosa rather than attempting to cover all benign and malignant tumors of the oral and oropharyngeal tissue. One main aim is to inform general pathologists of the significance of the clinical features of the various lesions discussed as, on the whole, they may be unfamiliar with this territory. Attention is also drawn to those conditions particular to the oral mucosa that may give rise to appearances which are important in differential diagnoses but can be misleading to the pathologist who does not have detailed knowledge of the tissue involved. The TNM-classification for malignant tumors of the lip and oral cavity is also included.
The "decisive moment" is what counts, said the legendary
photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. For more than half-a-century,
the theater photographer Ruth Walz schooled her eye to capture
fleeting moments on stage so that they still grip us today. In
doing so, she gives us exciting after-images of irretrievably lost
theatrical productions. She provided audiences of the time with
matchless memories and new insights; anyone looking at her pictures
today undergoes a journey into the fascinating world of the
theater. After working for around fifteen years as a photographer
for the Schaubuhne in Berlin, she spent the ensuing years
accompanying directors, set designers, and actors on their paths
through European theater and opera. Her precise gaze and her
curiosity about the art of the stage remain undiminished to this
day. This illustrated volume with texts by Gerhard Stadelmaier,
Niklas Maak, and other authors, as well as interviews with Robert
Wilson and Peter Sellars, is a companion to the extensive
exhibition of her photographs at the Museum fur Fotografie in
Berlin.
Data-driven experimental analysis has become the main evaluation
tool of Natural Language Processing (NLP) algorithms. In fact, in
the last decade, it has become rare to see an NLP paper,
particularly one that proposes a new algorithm, that does not
include extensive experimental analysis, and the number of involved
tasks, datasets, domains, and languages is constantly growing. This
emphasis on empirical results highlights the role of statistical
significance testing in NLP research: If we, as a community, rely
on empirical evaluation to validate our hypotheses and reveal the
correct language processing mechanisms, we better be sure that our
results are not coincidental. The goal of this book is to discuss
the main aspects of statistical significance testing in NLP. Our
guiding assumption throughout the book is that the basic question
NLP researchers and engineers deal with is whether or not one
algorithm can be considered better than another one. This question
drives the field forward as it allows the constant progress of
developing better technology for language processing challenges. In
practice, researchers and engineers would like to draw the right
conclusion from a limited set of experiments, and this conclusion
should hold for other experiments with datasets they do not have at
their disposal or that they cannot perform due to limited time and
resources. The book hence discusses the opportunities and
challenges in using statistical significance testing in NLP, from
the point of view of experimental comparison between two
algorithms. We cover topics such as choosing an appropriate
significance test for the major NLP tasks, dealing with the unique
aspects of significance testing for non-convex deep neural
networks, accounting for a large number of comparisons between two
NLP algorithms in a statistically valid manner (multiple hypothesis
testing), and, finally, the unique challenges yielded by the nature
of the data and practices of the field.
