The world seems to have recently discovered India and China as
major players in Asia, and political and economic connections
between the two countries are rapidly growing. Beyond the
fashionable phenomenon, the two countries have much in common and
many shared experiences. Both are developing countries with dynamic
economies focused on lifting their people out of poverty. There are
also differences as well, as India is a democracy while China is an
autocratic state, and the speed of economic growth is much higher
in India. This collection provides a comparative analysis of
development-induced migration in India and China caused by
urbanization and dam construction. The contributors include
scholars from both countries working in both academia and
consultancy positions.
In recent times, migration from the Northeastern region of India
has been increasing due to growing consciousness among the people
regarding acquiring better education for better career prospects,
especially in the present context of information and communication
technology facilities, a large number of people have started moving
out of the region to different states of India for capacity
building. The underlying factors contributing to the migration
basically due to lack of infrastructure facilities including
educational institutions and other internal factors. Migration for
educational purposes could help in improving the quality of family
life through acquisition of better health, nutrition, family
planning, and childcare by widening the scope of earning higher
income. Analysing the connection between migration and education,
one could find that the growth rate of migration growing faster
than the rate of growth of population. Most of the migrants after
completing their education outside the region one found to take up
jobs in the destinations themselves due to scarcity of
work/employment opportunities in their respective states or origin.
