R369 Discovery Miles 3 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

ePDF and ePUB available Open Access under CC-BY-NC-ND licence. How can public services and social interventions create and sustain good outcomes for the populations they serve? Building on research in public health, social epidemiology and the social determinants of health, this book presents complexity theory as an alternative basis for an outcome-oriented public management praxis. It takes a critical approach towards New Public Management and provides new conceptual inroads for reappraising public management in theory and practice. It advances two practical approaches: Human Learning Systems (a model for public service reform) and Learning Partnerships (a model for research and academic engagement in complex settings). With up-to-date and extensive discussions on public service reform, this book provides practical and action-oriented guidance for a radical change of course in management and governance.

Digital Government at Work - A Social Informatics Perspective (Hardcover, New): Ian McLoughlin, Rob Wilson Digital Government at Work - A Social Informatics Perspective (Hardcover, New)
Ian McLoughlin, Rob Wilson; Introduction by Mike Martin
R3,253 R2,715 Discovery Miles 27 150 Save R538 (17%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the past decade, putting public services on-line has been a focus of huge policy and financial investments aimed at providing more joined-up service delivery. For some this is part of a transformation that is bringing about a new era of integrated digital government. For others digitalization means threats to privacy and security and a strengthening of bureaucracy. In the UK and beyond, front-line service providers and citizens have been slow to take up digital services whilst major projects have floundered. This book takes a fresh look at this vital area for public policy and practice. Informed by over ten years of original research on the 'inside' of projects to put local services on-line, the authors combine cross-disciplinary insights to provide a new social informatics perspective on digital government. Experiences in areas such as health and social care are used to illustrate the dangers of 'over-integration' when key decisions are left to system designers, as they seek to integrate information in centralized systems. The authors argue for a new 'architectural discourse' to change the way that systems are deployed, evolve, and are governed. This leads to the conclusion that increased coordination of public services in a digital economy is better achieved through federated rather than integrated services that recognize the infrastructural nature of information systems and the essential role of co-production in their future evolution

It provides the information you need to successfully pass the CompTIA PenTest+ PTO-002 certification exam and contains detailed examples, projects, and hands-on activities (including virtual machine labs and interactive online features) where you can practice using the actual tools and methodologies needed to be a successful penetration tester. The author begins by exploring the concept of penetration testing, and then walks you through the process of building your own penetration testing lab of virtual machines (hosted on your own computer, which is used to practice the use of pen testing tools and methods). A final project guides you in the creation of a penetration testing report that includes all the areas covered in earlier modules.

What Is in a Rim? - Critical Perspectives on the Pacific Region Idea (Paperback, New): Arif Dirlik What Is in a Rim? - Critical Perspectives on the Pacific Region Idea (Paperback, New)
Arif Dirlik; Contributions by Glenn Alcalay, Xiangming Chen, Bruce Cumings, Gary Gereffi, …
R1,770 Discovery Miles 17 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This pathbreaking, multidisciplinary work challenges our unthinking acceptance of such terms as 'Asia Pacific' and 'Pacific Rim.' Clarifying the hidden power relationships and hegemonic struggles that are disguised by ideological constructions of the region, the contributors uncover fundamental contradictions_including the human costs and consequences_that underlie the much-celebrated economic boom. In evaluating the idea of 'Asia Pacific,' the book shifts our focus from abstract relationships between capital and commodities to the human interactions that have played a formative part in the region's constitution. The contributors agree that it is these interactions that constitute the region, rather than the physical boundaries of the Pacific. This revised and updated edition brings in additional essays focusing on conceptualizations of the Pacific, considers more fully interactions among countries, and strongly emphasizes peoples within the Pacific, who are routinely ignored in most discussions of the 'Rim.'

R778 Discovery Miles 7 780 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

EPDF and EPUB available Open Access under CC-BY licence. This book examines the idea and practice of co-creation in public services. Informed by practical action, lived experience and research from 10 countries across Europe, including the UK, it shines new light on the theory and reality of co-creation by conceptualising it in terms of human rights, social justice and social innovation. Focusing on human dimensions, the book presents real life examples in public services as diverse as social care, health, work activation, housing and criminal justice. It also highlights the ways digital technologies can accelerate or hinder co-creation. The book confronts a paradox at the heart of co-creation: standardisation and inflexibility in planning and resourcing, or ‘concrete-ness’, counters the ‘elasticity’ required to sustain co-creation in complex contexts.

Critique and Cosmos - After Misao Miyoshi (Paperback): Rob Wilson, Paul A. Bove Critique and Cosmos - After Misao Miyoshi (Paperback)
Rob Wilson, Paul A. Bove
R310 R270 Discovery Miles 2 700 Save R40 (13%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This special issue aims to channel the energies, tactics, critical forces, and comparative poetics Masao Miyoshi (1928-2009) carried out in his work from the 1970s on: coming to terms with his concept of aftering (the act of prolonging and transforming impacts across cultural, political, and disciplinary borders) and its temporal, border-crossing, translational, field-reframing, and revisionary effects. Contributors do not assess his scholarship and photography in any memorial, critical, or honorific sense. Instead, they seek to renew the critical visions that he distributed across various fields, from Asian to Asian American studies and beyond. Each takes seriously the mandate inside Miyoshi's work that cultural criticism envision its work broadly and courageously. Essays address the state of Japan studies; China's role in twentieth-century geopolitics, particularly involving Tibet; the critical ethos of "the planetary" in the Anthropocene; and the Korean film Snowpiercer, whose plot represents an embodiment of killer capitalism. Through zany facts, hilarious and sometimes disgusting illustrations, and interviews with experts in their fields, aspiring young scientists (or kids who just want to be grossed out) will discover a hidden world in which your health depends on a myriad of microbes, houseflies get zombified by fungi, and termites are saving the planet one fart at a time. With such extras as sidebars, limericks, and even a lesson on how to draw E. coli, this “eww”-worthy treasure trove for kids is an engrossing romp into the microbe drama unfolding where you might least expect it.

The Archaeology of Hill Farming on Exmoor (Paperback): Cain Hegarty The Archaeology of Hill Farming on Exmoor (Paperback)
Cain Hegarty; As told to Rob Wilson-North
R747 Discovery Miles 7 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The story of hill farming on Exmoor is told here for the first time through archaeological evidence newly revealed after two years of systematic survey work. This compelling narrative of human endeavour against a beguiling, yet harsh landscape takes the reader from the pioneer farmers of the medieval period through to the inexhaustible energy of the Victorian 'improvers' who transformed the landscape of Exmoor. The focus of the book is the battle - and it is a battle - to make the wastes and moorland of this upland landscape as productive as possible. Meticulous survey work is presented showing how nearly 700 years of 'reclamation' on the royal forest of Exmoor, its surrounding commons and its hill farms, has helped to shape the landscape of Exmoor National Park. This includes recent air photographs, reconstructions, detailed plans and maps. This book will appeal to those who know and love Exmoor; those with an interest in hill farming and how the uplands have been farmed through time; and those who wish to know more about Victorian innovation.

Be always converting, and be always converted; turn us again, O Lord, Thomas Shepard urged his Cambridge congregation in the 1640s. This mandate coming down from American Puritan times to New Age seekers, to be always converting, and always converted, places a radical burden on the self as site of renewal and world-change, even as conversion becomes surrounded by deconversion (rejection of prior beliefs) and counterconversion (turns to alternative beliefs) across global modernity.

Rob Wilson s reconceptualization of the American project of conversion begins with the story of Henry Opukaha ia, the first Hawaiian convert to Christianity, torn from the stomach of his Native Pacific homeland and transplanted to New England. Wilson argues that Opukaha ia s conversion is both remarkable and prototypically American, because he dared to redefine himself via this drive to rebirth.

By mapping the poetics and politics of conversion and counterconversion, Wilson returns conversion to its central place in the American literature, history, and psyche. Through Opukaha ia s story, and through the works of the Tongan social scientist and fiction writer Epeli Hau ofa, Wild West poet Ai, and the mercurial Bob Dylan, Wilson demonstrates that conversion seemingly an anachronistic concern in this secular age is instead a global, yet deeply American subject, less about salvation or finality than about experimentation and the quest for modern beatitude.

Ian P McLoughlin, Karin Garrety, Rob Wilson
R2,625 Discovery Miles 26 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Electronic health records are widely regarded as the 'connective tissue' of any modern healthcare system. For some they represent a 'dangerous enthusiasm' and for others a key enabler of 'disruptive innovation'. Many governments have made major policy and financial investments in digitalizing health records but their implementation has frequently run into opposition from doctors, had lukewarm responses from patients, and raised considerable concerns for privacy advocates and others worried by the security of sensitive health data and the risks of national data-bases. This book draws upon the concept of 'orders of worth' to reveal the moral dimensions of the medical division of labour and to delve deeper into understanding why electronic records have been so difficult to implement and the sources of opposition to them. The authors argue that digitalization disrupts the moral orders which define rights and responsibilities for the sharing and exchanging of patient medical data. This is illustrated through longitudinal studies of two of the most controversial attempts to introduce national systems - a patient controlled electronic record in Australia and a national summary care record that was part of the ill-fated NHS national program for IT in England. The authors conclude by using the lessons from these national experiences and insights from two regional projects in each country to suggest how the idea of electronic records might be re-thought. It is a must read for anyone concerned about health information and the implications of how it is shared and exchanged in a digital world.
