This book presents an in-depth phenomenological and deconstructive
analysis of the automobility imaginary, which is none other than
the mundane automobility reality within which we dwell in everyday
life. A successful transition to a post-automobility future will
require new ways of thinking about and conceptualizing
automobility, one of the most significant and powerful imaginaries
of contemporary neo-liberalism. This book offers such a view by
reconceptualizing automobility in its entirety as both an imaginary
and a dreamscape. In order to address the challenges, externalities
and tragedies that automobility has brought upon us, automobility,
we argue, must end as we know it.
Most practitioners and decision makers look at corporate social
responsibility (CSR) as a socially responsible management practice
on top of what company leaders normally do: focus on the
sustainable, long term financial profitability of their
corporation. This book focuses on a political understanding of CSR:
the author bridges politics corporate social responsibility and in
a creative and provocative manner. Braun seeks to explore why and
how corporations are to be seen as political entities with
important roles in our current societies. The first part discusses
the social context, the various stakeholder approaches and it also
endeavors - with the help of the historic/political parallel of the
bourgeois revolutions in the 19th century - to define the corporate
polity. The second part analyses the new kind of operational logic
from the viewpoint of the different areas of corporate operation;
it gives an overview of the consequences for the individual areas
of operation and indicates how corporate policy can be realized in
the given field of operation. The third part of the book introduces
the institutions necessary for the creation of the corporate
polity.
Protectors of Pluralism argues that local religious minorities are
more likely to save persecuted groups from purification campaigns.
Robert Braun utilizes a geo-referenced dataset of Jewish evasion in
the Netherlands and Belgium during the Holocaust to assess the
minority hypothesis. Spatial statistics and archival work reveal
that Protestants were more likely to rescue Jews in Catholic
regions of the Low Countries, while Catholics facilitated evasion
in Protestant areas. Post-war testimonies and secondary literature
demonstrate the importance of minority groups for rescue in other
countries during the Holocaust as well as other episodes of mass
violence, underlining how the local position of church communities
produces networks of assistance, rather than something inherent to
any religion itself. This book makes an important contribution to
the literature on political violence, social movements, altruism
and religion, applying a range of social science methodologies and
theories that shed new light on the Holocaust.
