In Hidden Questions, Clinical Musings, M. Robert Gardner chronicles
an odyssey of self-discovery that has taken him beneath and beyond
the categoies and conventions of traditional psychoanalysis. His
essays offer a vision of psychoanalytic inquiry that blends art and
science, a vision in which the subtly intertwining
not-quite-conscious questions of analysand and analyst, gradually
discerned, open to ever-widening vistas of shared meaning. Gardner
is wonderfully illuminating in exploring the associations, images,
and dreams that have fueled his own analytic inquiries, but he is
no less compelling in writing about the different perceptual
modalities and endlessly variegated strategies that can be summoned
to bring hidden questions to light. This masterfully assembled
collection exemplifies the lived experience of psychoanalysis of
one of its most gifted and reflective practitioners. In his vivid
depictions of analysis oscillating between the poles of art and
science, word and image, inquiry and self-inquiry, Gardner offers
precious insights into tensions that are basic to the analytic
endeavor. Evincing rare virtuosity of form and content, these
essays are evocative clinical gems, radiating the humility, gentle
skepticism, and abiding wonder of this lifelong self-inquirer.
Gardner's most uncommon musings are a gift to the reader.
First published in 1989. Routledge is an imprint of Taylor and
Francis, an informa company.
In an era in which the teaching enterprise is freighted with
tactics, techniques, and methods, M. Robert Gardner guides us back
to the spirit of teaching. He writes especially about the dilemmas
and challenges of teaching, about how it feels to be trying to
teach. Gardner's provocative, often iconoclastic musings will goad
teachers of all subjects to reflect anew on their calling. Clinical
readers will take special pleasure in the humane psychoanalytic
sensibility that not only infuses Gardner's own teaching, but
shapes his approach to the most basic questions about teaching and
learning in general.

A survey of theoretical and experimental research, this book covers
all areas of lightning phenomenology. The four sections cover
models of fundamental lightning processes, propagation of
lightning-induced signals, measurement of lightning parameters, and
lightning interaction with systems. The book provides an excellent
review of the use of models to support remote sensing efforts. It
includes data on high-frequency radiated fields for lightening and
an overview of the data available in the frequency and time domains
for lightning. The book also presents spectoral and temporal
characteristics of lightning in the VHF-UHF frequency range and
uses photographic and electromagnetic measurements to examine how
lighting chooses a strike point.
Covering subjects such as empathy, transference, and
countertransference, as well as the nature of the psychoanalytic
process, the author of this work argues that there can be no
psychoanalysis without self analysis.

In "Human Documents," Robert Gardner introduces the work of
photographers with whom he has worked over a period of nearly fifty
years under the auspices of the Film Study Center at Harvard. Their
images achieve the status of what Gardner calls "human documents":
visual evidence that testifies to our shared humanity. In images
and words, the book adds to the already significant literature on
photography and filmmaking as ways to gather both fact and insight
into the human condition. In nearly 100 images spanning geographies
and cultures including India, New Guinea, Ethiopia, and the United
States, Human Documents demonstrates the important role photography
can play in furthering our understanding of human nature and
connecting people through an almost universal visual language.
Author and cultural critic Eliot Weinberger contributes the
essay "Photography and Anthropology (A Contact Sheet)," in which he
provides a new and intriguing context for viewing and thinking
about the images presented here.
With photographs by Michael Rockefeller, Robert Gardner, Kevin
Bubriski, Adelaide de Menil, Christopher James, Jane Tuckerman,
Susan Meiselas, and Alex Webb.

An in-depth look at real analysis and its applications, including
an introduction to wavelet
analysis, a popular topic in "applied real analysis." This text
makes a very natural connection between the classic pure analysis
and the applied topics, including measure theory, Lebesgue
Integral,
harmonic analysis and wavelet theory with many associated
applications.
*The text is relatively elementary at the start, but the level of
difficulty steadily increases
*The book contains many clear, detailed examples, case studies and
exercises
*Many real world applications relating to measure theory and pure
analysis
*Introduction to wavelet analysis
When we observe protest marches, striking workers at pickets, and
insurgent movements in the world today, a litany of objects
routinely fill our field of vision. Some such objects are
ubiquitous the world over, such as flags, banners, and placards.
Others are situationally unique: who could have anticipated the
historical importance of a flower placed in the barrel of a gun, a
flaming torch, a sea of umbrellas, a motorist’s yellow vest, a
feather headdress, an AK-47, or a knitted pink hat? This book
explores the “stuff” at the heart of protests, revolutions,
civil wars, and other contentious political events. In particular,
its focus is on those objects that have or acquire symbolic
importance. In the context of “contentious politics” (i.e.
disruptive political episodes where people try to change societies
without going through institutions), such objects can divide and
unite social groups, tell stories, make declarations, spark
controversy, and even trigger violent upheavals. This book draws
together scholars from a variety of fields to discuss symbolic
objects in contentious politics: their meanings, uses, functions,
and social responses. Its purpose in doing so is threefold. The
authors believe that: (1) objects and materiality have been
underrepresented and under-theorized in the study of contentious
politics broadly defined; (2) various individual subfields—such
as social movement studies, peace and conflict studies, and
scholarship on revolutions, terrorism, and
(counter)insurgency—could gain much from further consideration of
symbolic objects; and (3) there is much to be gained from having
these subfields in conversation on the topic. In bringing these
phenomena together, this book offers a serious, distinctive, and
cohesive theoretical contribution, which draws upon diverse
scholarly work in order to form the building blocks for future
inquiry in the field. The aim of this book is not merely to
“close the gap” in the literature, but to create space in the
field for further and more fruitful inquiry.
In 1936 Charles Gardner joined the BBC as a sub-editor in its news
department. Shortly afterwards, he was joined by Richard Dimbleby
and together they became the very first BBC news correspondents.
They covered everything from shipwrecks to fires, floods to air
raid precautions and, in Garner's' case, new aircraft. Their
exploits became legendary and they laid down the first principles
of news broadcasting - of integrity and impartiality - still
followed today. With the outbreak of war Charles Gardner became one
of the first BBC war correspondents and was posted to France to
cover the RAF's AASF (Advanced Air Strike Force). He made numerous
broadcasts interviewing many fighter pilots after engagements with
the Germans and recalling stories of raids, bomb attacks and
eventually the Blitzkrieg when they all were evacuated from France.
When he got home he wrote a book AASF which was one of the first
books on the Second World War to be published. In late 1940 he was
commissioned in the RAF as a pilot and flew Catalina flying boats
of Coastal Command. After support missions over the Atlantic
protecting supply convoys from America, his squadron was deployed
to Ceylon which was under threat from the Japanese navy. Gardner
was at the controls when he was the first to sight the Japanese
fleet and report back its position. Gardner was later recruited by
Lord Mountbatten, to help report the exploits of the British 14th
Army in Burma. He both broadcast and filed countless reports of
their astonishing bravery in beating the Japanese in jungle
conditions and monsoon weather. After the war, Gardner became the
BBC air correspondent from 1946-1953\. As such, he became known as
The Voice of the Air,' witnessing and recording the greatest days
in British aviation history. But Perhaps he will best be remembered
for his 1940 eye-witness account of an air battle over the English
Channel when German dive bombers unsuccessfully attacked a British
convoy but were driven off by RAF fighters. At the time it caused a
national controversy. Some complained about his commentary being
like a football match,' and not an air battle where men's lives
were at stake. That broadcast is still played frequently today.
