Robert Hudson, Ivan Dodovski
R3,323 Discovery Miles 33 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides a broad, interdisciplinary analysis of events impacting on North Macedonia since its independence, particularly during the last decade. In the past thirty years, the country has gone through a series of tremendous changes, including a name change from 'Macedonia' to the 'Republic of North Macedonia' following the Prespa Agreement, which ended a long-lasting name dispute. The contributors consider Macedonia's challenges, its multi-ethnic/multi-cultural background and its ambition to enter the European mainstream through the auspices of the European Union and NATO, amidst a raft of other issues. The volume includes chapters on international politics and North Macedonia's place in the region's security architecture.

Self-Determined First Nations Museums and Colonial Contestation - The Keeping Place (Hardcover): Robert Hudson, Shannon Woodcock Self-Determined First Nations Museums and Colonial Contestation - The Keeping Place (Hardcover)
Robert Hudson, Shannon Woodcock
R1,661 Discovery Miles 16 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Grounded in the fact that Gunai Kurnai people have never ceded sovereignty, the text reorients dominant temporal and colonial approaches of museum studies to document and theorise Gunai Kurnai self-presentation and community engagement in the Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place. Researched and co-authored by the Cultural Manager of the Keeping Place, Gunai Kurnai Monero Ngarigo man Robert Hudson, and white Historian Shannon Woodcock, the book traces the temporal, social and cultural considerations of the Elders who curated the permanent exhibition in the early 1990s. Discussing community management of a collection growing through the ongoing repatriation of tools, art and Ancestor remains, the text also explores how Robert Hudson engages with visitors to the Keeping Place and local colonial history museums, and theorises the power of Gunai Kurnai work with individuals and institutions in the small museum context. Finally, Hudson and Woodcock demonstrate that the Keeping Place articulates sophisticated Gunai Kurnai-grounded methodologies of museum practice in relation to international critical Indigenous studies scholarship. Self-determined First Nations Museums and Colonial Contestation provides a vital case study of an Indigenous museum space written from an inside perspective. As such, the book will be essential reading for scholars and students engaged in the study of museums and heritage, Indigenous peoples, decolonisation, race, anthropology, culture and history

The standard style guide of the Christian publishing industry, The Christian Writer's Manual of Style, 4th Edition, compiled by veteran Zondervan editor Robert Hudson, contains clear guidance on style questions related to religious writing, including many topics not addressed in other references or online. Nearly half of this fourth revision is made up of new material, including information about turning blogs into books, the effects of digital media on writing, "adverbial doubles," "vanishing accents," word-choice strategies, endorser guidelines, and much more. It also contains an all-new "Word List" which makes up more than a third of the book. The most needful information remains-entries on capitalization, abbreviation, citations, fictional dialogue, and more-but it has all been updated to keep pace with changes in English language usage. This fourth edition also corresponds with The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition (2010), though it isn't afraid to chart new territory where that reference is unhelpful on issues of religious writing. Comprehensive yet easy-to-use, The Christian Writer's Manual of Style, 4th Edition, is a go-to resource for Christian authors, pastors, teachers, copy writers, editors, proofreaders, publishing and ministry professionals, executive assistants, and students-anyone who writes or edits as a part of their work or study-and for grammar aficionados everywhere.

Seeing Things - The Philosophy of Reliable Observation (Hardcover): Robert Hudson Seeing Things - The Philosophy of Reliable Observation (Hardcover)
Robert Hudson
R2,570 Discovery Miles 25 700 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Seeing Things, Robert Hudson assesses a common way of arguing about observation reports called "robustness reasoning." Robustness reasoning claims that an observation report is more likely to be true if the report is produced by multiple, independent sources. Seeing Things argues that robustness reasoning lacks the special value it is often claimed to have. Hudson exposes key flaws in various popular philosophical defenses of robustness reasoning. This philosophical critique of robustness is extended by recounting five episodes in the history of science (from experimental microbiology, atomic theory, astrophysics and astronomy) where robustness reasoning is - or could be claimed to have been - used. Hudson goes on to show that none of these episodes do in fact exhibit robustness reasoning. In this way, the significance of robustness reasoning is rebutted on both philosophical and historical grounds. But the book does more than critique robustness reasoning. It also develops a better defense of the informative value of observation reports. The book concludes by relating insights into the failure of robustness reasoning to a popular approach to scientific realism called "(theoretical) preservationism." Hudson argues that those who defend this approach to realism commit similar errors to those who advocate robustness reasoning. In turn, a new form of realism is formulated and defended. Called "methodological preservationism," it recognizes the fundamental value of naked eye observation to scientists - and the rest of us.

A timeless, little-known literary classic. As the Black Death ravaged London in 1608, the theatres closed, many people moved out of town for safety, and playwrights scrambled to find other outlets for their talent. While Shakespeare retreated to his hometown of Stratford, Thomas Dekker wrote Four Birds of Noah's Ark, a book containing fifty-six prayers for the people of London and all of England. Dekker's prayers bear witness to his deep faith and profound understanding of human psychology with a power and poignancy that few written prayers in English literature achieve. Bringing this devotional classic back into print for the first time since 1924, editor Robert Hudson has included a fine introduction, annotated the prayers, and modernised the language without sacrificing any of its beauty and simplicity. This lovely book at once surprises and enchants with its literary voice, devotional heart, and accessible writing.

Stories of an Unusual Life (Paperback): Robert Hudson Stories of an Unusual Life (Paperback)
Robert Hudson
R745 Discovery Miles 7 450 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

An epic story of how the GI Bill made it possible for the author to travel around the world to teach in strange and exotic places, and still enjoy the luxury of a professional career as a Schoolteacher, a Scientific Research Analyst; a State Department Foreign Service Officer, and work for pay as a part-time boat captain. The book is a collage of episodes describing daring adventures abroad that will captivate the reader. On private contract he taught school in Haiti. He tells about brutality and poverty endured by most of the population. He relates how he was in harms way trying to prevent a brutal killing. The reader also gets an inside look about teaching six grades simultaneously in a one-room schoolhouse in the jungle of Sumatra, far removed from civilization: including some curious events that happened while living in almost complete isolation. A portion of the book tells about his research activities. One unusual experiment shows how devoted a researcher must be. Dr Woke and the writer sat half naked in a cage feeding hundreds of mosquitoes for two months. "Thou shalt not kill." While teaching in Afghanistan, the author gives a detailed account of his adventures including a solo trek through the infamous Khyber Pass, from Jalalabad, Afghanistan to Islamabad, Pakistan, and visits to other countries as well. As a Foreign Service Officer, in the U.S. State Department, the author shares his knowledge about foreign countries including Vietnam and Egypt, and related experiences with the reader. While in Egypt, the author documents memorable and sometimes risky experiences exploring the Sahara Desert and the Sinai.

Land & Identity - Theory, Memory, and Practice (Paperback): Christine Berberich, Neil Campbell, Robert Hudson Land & Identity - Theory, Memory, and Practice (Paperback)
Christine Berberich, Neil Campbell, Robert Hudson
R2,865 Discovery Miles 28 650 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This collection of essays aims to investigate the complex issues surrounding contemporary cultural discourses on land and identity - their production, construction, and reconstruction across a range of different texts and materials. The chapters offer disciplinary and trans-disciplinary approaches opening up discussion and new routes for research in a number of interrelated areas such as Countryside vs. City, Diaspora, Landscapes of Memory and Trauma, Migrational Spaces, and Ecology. They represent a number of innovative contemporary responses to how concepts of land intersect and dialogue with notions of identity across and between regions, nations, races, and cultures. Through employing interdisciplinary methods and theories drawn from diverse sources, such as cultural studies, spatial theory, philosophy and literary theory, the chapters chart varied and complex themes of identity formation in relation to spatiality.
