Social Movements and Global Social Change - The Rising Tide (Hardcover): Robert K. Schaeffer Social Movements and Global Social Change - The Rising Tide (Hardcover)
Robert K. Schaeffer
R2,975 Discovery Miles 29 750 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Social Movements and Global Social Change teaches students not only about how social change occurs but also how social movements can contribute to this change. The book links two concepts in sociology that are often related in real life, but that can seem disconnected in traditional approaches to teaching these courses. The book examines different types of social movements, including those often ignored in social change textbooks, such as riots, migration, and disorganized protest. It also looks at citizens' rights and inequality in connection to social movements and change. The book features global perspectives and examples throughout.

Red Inc. - Dictatorship and the Development of Capitalism in China, 1949-2009 (Hardcover): Robert K. Schaeffer Red Inc. - Dictatorship and the Development of Capitalism in China, 1949-2009 (Hardcover)
Robert K. Schaeffer
R4,302 Discovery Miles 43 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Red Inc. takes issue with the view that economic development will eventually promote democracy. It outlines in detail the enormous social costs of the rapid rise of China's economy. Although many observers argue that Deng Xiaoping introduced capitalism to China in the late 1970s, Schaeffer believes that capitalist development really began during the 1950s under Mao Zedong. But although Mao made relentless efforts to generate the capital needed to finance economic development, his regime failed to promote any real growth. Schaeffer shows that the remarkable rise of its economy in recent years has provided China with new and often corrupt sources of wealth and power that have enabled it to resist democracy. He brings into sharp focus the consequence of the regime's uncompromising approach to capital accumulation.

Transformations - Feminist Pathways to Global Change (Paperback): Torry D. Dickinson, Robert K. Schaeffer Transformations - Feminist Pathways to Global Change (Paperback)
Torry D. Dickinson, Robert K. Schaeffer
R1,912 Discovery Miles 19 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Activists are embedding feminism in many movements for global change, igniting the transnational power of feminism. The editors of this analytic anthology argue that egalitarian, democratic, gender/sexuality, work and trade, environmental, and peace movements interconnect and exhibit strong a feminist core. Diverse feminist movements now initiate structural reforms and invent alternative social relations. As they build foundations that may lead to new societies, intertwined movements and practical projects enhance the possibilities for sustained change. This book's synthetic approach and its practical cases show readers--students, activists, scholars, and general readers alike--that feminist knowledge and participatory action have become key elements in local to global change. Within the contemporary, global-historical context, the editors redefine and integrate theories. They explore knowledge that relates to feminist, intersectional, world-system and other frameworks. Each chapter provides the editors' original analysis of a feminist-driven movement, literature reviews (with examples in side-bars), and related anthology selections that have been written by noted multicultural scholars and activists who work in diverse urban and rural areas of the world.

Separatism - Democracy and Disintegration (Paperback, New): Metta Spencer Separatism - Democracy and Disintegration (Paperback, New)
Metta Spencer; Contributions by Yildiz Atasoy, John Bacher, Milica Z. Bookman, Feodor Burlatsky, …
R1,146 Discovery Miles 11 460 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As we approach the millennium the world is experiencing civil wars exclusively-half of which are being waged over the issue of secession. This book offers a comparative view of nine historic separatist movements, some of which have achieved the break-up of an empire or a state, and others that to date have not. Separatist struggles occur in waves that tend to coincide with upsurges of democratization. Several chapters explore this connection, making comparisons with economic and geopolitical causes. The authors analyze the long term effects of secession: after partition, ethnic strife typically continues for generations; minorities decline in status; and democracy and human rights are derogated. The break-up of one state often leads to further fragmentation, as in the disintegration of the Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, and Russian empires, where years later separatism unfolded in the successor states of Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, Palestine, Chechnya and Tatarstan. The authors attribute much of today's separatism to the demagoguery of politicians losing legitimacy in post-communist states, for whom nationalism is a convenient populist ideology. A broader explanation, however, points to the failure of modern democracies to develop constitutional mechanisms reconciling the expression of particularistic identities with the universalism of citizenship. The book reviews proposals toward that end.

R1,212 Discovery Miles 12 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Red Inc." provides a sweeping, critical account of the political and economic changes that have transformed China since 1949. Although many observers argue that Deng Xiaoping introduced capitalism to China in the late 1970s, "Red Inc." demonstrates that capitalist development really began during the 1950s under Mao Zedong. But while Mao made relentless efforts to generate the capital needed to finance economic development his regime failed to promote any real growth. By contrast, Deng successfully used reforms to promote rapid growth. Importantly, China s remarkable success was assisted by U.S. officials and by foreign investors who were persuaded by crises in democratizing countries across Asia and Latin America to migrate to China in search of low-wage labor and to bankroll China s industrialization during the 1990s. Rapid growth has provided the regime with new and often corrupt sources of wealth and power that have enabled it to stifle dissent and deter democracy. "Red Inc." challenges conventional accounts of political and economic change in China, takes issue with the view that economic development will eventually promote democracy in China, punctures the regime s self-serving rationalizations about costly and problematic economic and social policies, and provides a detailed account of the enormous social costs imposed on rural and urban workers, in particular on women and girls, by the regime s uncompromising approach to capital accumulation."
