This book provides an alternative to the more conventional modes of qualitative and quantitative inquiry currently used in professional training programs, particularly in education. It features a very accessible presentation that combines application, rationale, critique, and inspiration-and is itself an example of this kind of writing. It teaches students how to use personal writing in order to analyse, explicate, and advance their ideas. And it encourages minority students, women, and others to find and express their authentic voices by teaching them to use their own lives as primary resources for their scholarship.
What we intend to do in this book is to explain, and exemplify, in a nuts-and-bolts way, what we are calling Scholarly Personal Narrative (SPN) writing. This is a genre created over 15 years ago by Robert, one of the co-authors of this book. The other co-author, DeMethra, has actually written a thesis and dissertation using this genre, so she brings an author's direct SPN experience to the table. Both of us co-teach a course that we call "Scholarly Personal Narrative Writing for Pre-Professionals and Professionals." In the chapters that follow, we will present a step-by-step approach for composing an SPN manuscript. The book will be comprised of four general parts, consisting of several short, practical chapters, written in non-technical language. We will write each of the chapters as a way of responding to the most common questions that our students have raised about SPN writing through the years. We will attempt to write as we teach, with no frills and with clarity, empathy, and understanding. We will also provide several SPN writing examples, as well as authorial toolbox tips, throughout the book. In addition, we will conclude with a bibliography of the most relevant personal narrative writing guides we have been able to muster. Our desire is to minimize the number of in-text citations and references in order to maximize the space for us to present a useful, nuts-and-bolts guide to writing, as well as a realistic, down-to-earth rationale for scholarly personal narrative writing in the academy. After reading the book, and practicing the writing exercises, undergraduate and graduate students will be able to author research papers, theses, and dissertations using the Scholarly Personal Narrative research genre. Hundreds of students have done this already throughout the country.
'This book makes an important contribution to the literature on homicide and on the role of alcohol in society. It advances our understanding of the structural determinants of aggregate homicide rates by 'bringing booze back in' (to steal a phrase from the authors).' --Steven F. Messner, State University of New York, Albany
This new edition of Bloodletters and Badmen represents the book's first major revision. Now Jeffrey Dahmer, Charles Keating, David Koresh, John Wayne Gacy and scores of others join Charles Manson, Meyer Lansky, Jesse James and Al Capone in one of the biggest, most fascinating compendium of true crime ever published.
This is the first book to provide sociologists, criminologists, political scientists, and other social scientists with the methodological logic and techniques for doing spatial analysis in their chosen fields of inquiry. The book contains a wealth of examples as to why these techniques are worth doing, over and above conventional statistical techniques using SPSS or other statistical packages. GIS is a methodological and conceptual approach that allows for the linking together of spatial data, or data that is based on a physical space, with non-spatial data, which can be thought of as any data that contains no direct reference to physical locations.
Several decades ago the boxer "Kid" McCoy was sent to San Quentin for the murder of his girlfriend. A taciturn prisoner, McCoy once blurted to his warden: "You know who I am, don't you-I'm McCoy, not one of those Hollywood types or the kind you find in made-up stories in the pulps. I'm the real McCoy." How much do you know about the real McCoys-and Suttons, Capones, Mansons, and Oswalds? The True Crime Quiz Book is filled with hundreds of questions to help you find out, in varying degrees of difficulty for anyone from the casual armchair detective to the most perceptive crime historian. Who done it...and why? Who beat it...and when? Who cracked it...and how? Here is the definitive testing ground for aficionados of real life crime. The True Crime Quiz Book lets you test yourself in all facets of criminal misdoing, and the Master Sleuth scoring shows how you stand against the best lawmen. The True Crime Quiz Book has hundreds of criminal teasers to satisfy even the most insatiable crime buffs.
Many people have experienced or witnessed situations in which people drinking alcohol get aggressive, obnoxious, and violent. Scientific research has shown evidence of a relationship between alcohol and violence, and even evidence that alcohol plays a role in causing violent and aggressive responses. The book explores a number of aspects of this relationship. If you have been drinking are you more likely to be a victim of crime? If victimized, does drinking alcohol make you more likely to be injured? How does availability of alcohol in the community influence rates of violence among Mexican American youth? Does advertising that links sex and alcohol result in higher rates of sexual assault in Latino neighborhoods? How do elementary school children react to experimentation with drugs, alcohol, and aggression? Do countries outside the United States have alcohol and violence problems, and do these impact men and women differently? We presents original research that shows the depths and conditions under which alcohol and violence are linked, further strengthening the evidence that alcohol use and availability is an important factor in violence in our cities, neighborhoods, school, and homes. The good news is that we regulate alcohol use and availability effectively, with a body of established laws and procedures. We can, therefore, find ways using this existing system to develop new ways to prevent the alcohol related violence studied here. The second half of the book begins this task by laying out the principles of environmental prevention, a strategy that has been very successful in a number of health and safety related domains. The next four chapters show just how environmental prevention strategies have worked, and worked very effectively, to lower rates of violence by reducing alcohol availability and alcohol consumption. The research reported here shows communities different approaches and mechanisms to achieve reductions in violence, and they provide a road map for communities everywhere to follow suit and reduce alcohol related violence. Reducing violence can be accomplished, everyone can do it if they work together, and the result is a safer and better society.

So little is known about the poet Robert Nash. Until the 21st century, when his poems were discovered in a French basement, he remained undiscovered. The poems had been written in Maine and sent to Nash's friend in France, to be discovered by the friend's son decades later in a suitcase. Nash emigrated to America from Sussex, England, when he was a child. He lived in Maine with his wife Catriona and son Lee, and likely didn't turn to writing poetry until his life took a tragic turn. Lee was killed in 1974 in Vietnam. Catriona died two years later. On May 31, 1995, one week after writing his last dated poem, Robert Nash disappeared. Anything else about Nash's life is speculation and hypothesis. No trace has ever been found and no family or heirs have claimed him. But the poems he left behind demonstrate a true mastery of the craft and reveal his profound solitude and his intimate and healing relationship with nature. In his introduction, former Maine Poet Laureate finds Nash's place in the Maine literary canon. Robert Nash has come home. Originally written in French (for his friend who didn't speak English) and published in France in three separate volumes, these poems have been lovingly translated back to the poet's native language by Francoise Canter.

This all-inclusive A-Z encyclopedia by one of the world's foremost experts on cinema provides comprehensive annotations of the best films produced from 1914 on. The work offers more than 5,000 three- to five-star entries (three stars=good; four stars=excellent; five stars=masterpiece), and yes, author Jay Robert Nash has viewed every single one of them as well as many more that did not "make the cut." In addition to a precis, each film's entry also includes a listing of the cast as well as the key principles involved in production, from the director to the hair stylist. Especially unique to this book is a rating system that helps parents determine whether or not a film is appropriate for their children. Unlike the industry rating system which can be influenced by studio lobbying, Nash objectively evaluates each film and confers upon it one of four recommendations for viewing: recommended, acceptable, cautionary, and unacceptable. Backmatter includes a list of top films by genre (i.e. animated, drama, sports, mystery, adventure etc.) as well as an annotated name index listing all persons mentioned along with their dates of birth and death. Rounding out this essential volume for the film buff are over 500 still photos from the author's private collection.

A Memoir based on actual events and the coming of age of a young boy mixed up and thrown into a life of uncertainty, filled with sexual, mental and physical abuse. Showing that the struggles of a child should not define who a person is and based on my life experiences it needs to be known that anyone can survive and triumph over any circumstances thrown their way. Robert, a kid from the streets of North Philly, as a child, poor, cocky and full of anger, rage and sadness. Triumphant over the shame of his past; growing into a responsible man; father and human being. Robert has never hidden from harsh realities; he has always taken from his past heartaches- lessons learned to build his life to what it is today-full of love, understanding and forgiveness. Straightforward, unvarnished, honest style, poetic and poignant in turns. Robert does not shrink from harsh truths. Unique storyline, informative and hits hard in inner, interpersonal and universal conflicts.

Beginning with a brief overview of the Bible's structure and history, the authors highlight the development of the canon, point out the major events in the story of the Bible's translation into English, and assess the strengths and weaknesses of the different contemporary English translations of Scripture.

This volume examines the problem of null or negative evaluation findings, a topic rarely discussed in the literature but all too commonplace in the experience of evaluators. "The Southern California Center of Excellence on Youth Violence Prevention," housed in the "Robert Presley Center for Crime and Justice Studies" at the "University of California, Riverside," has taken up the challenge to discuss candidly evaluation efforts that can be described only as challenging. The individual chapters discuss a range of design, implementation, and analysis issues relevant not only to evaluation studies but also to interventions that can contribute to negative or null findings in the evaluation of an intervention program. These problems that are the realities of life for anyone who conducts prevention and intervention research are typically the stuff of research seminar comments and barroom digressions late in the evening at professional meetings. This issue brings those important lessons into the larger discussion that will influence prevention science and public policy. The contributors to this volume not only admit a set of problems and shortcomings but also attempt to draw general lessons, cautions, and advice for those who evaluate prevention and intervention efforts. This is the 110th volume of "New Directions for Evaluation," a quarterly journal published by Jossey-Bass.
