This book introduces in a non-traditional way the laws of physical chemistry and its history starting in the 16th century. It reveals to the reader how physical chemists try to understand chemical processes in terms of physical laws. Hydrogen is the main focus of the book as its simplicity makes the relevant laws of nature easy to explain and its role in energetics in the near future is clear. With the basics at hand, the importance of hydrogen as a raw material in the industry and as an energy carrier in the near future is made clear. Only simple chemical processes are discussed and very little mathematics is used. Both the pleasure and use of this field of research are revealed to the interested reader. The expected readership is made of high school students, non-chemistry major freshmen, and general audience with an interest in chemistry. The real aim of this book is to prompt the reader to wonder.
This book argues that science and the arts are not two different cultures, but rather different manifestations of the same culture. Divided into seven parts, it presents a collection of translated and revised essays, mostly at the intersection between realia and humaniora. In the first two parts, the author discusses how some myths, both ancient and modern, have become intertwined with scientific ideas. The chapters in the following four parts address poems, novels, plays, and pieces of fine art that have some scientific content, as well as scientific findings which seem to have also been discovered in art. The chapters in the final part examine a number of inspiring doubts and necessary errors in the history of science. This collection of essays, most of which were originally published in Hungarian, is intended for the general public and as such includes no mathematical, physical or chemical formulae. It offers a unique resource for all those curious about the interconnections between science, art and literature.
During the last decades of the 1800s and the first decade of the 1900s, some of the most elegant and colorful military service caps (schirmmutzen) were worn by the Imperial German cavalry. The unique color combinations identified each regiment, and were the last stand for military fashion before and during World War I. This book is the first complete reference on schirmmutzen, and shows and describes the headgear for all branches of the Imperial German cavalry. The pre-war models as well as the M-7 and M-15 war model caps are all illustrated in color photos and original period postcards. The book also provides German nomenclature for the caps and valuable tips on how to collect and identify the various regiments.
This book appeals to higher education scholars from various disciplines and practitioners looking for an overview and in-depth insight into cooperative study programs (CSPs). The CSPs combine elements of higher education with elements of professional work and illustrate how a teaching-related third mission achieves a socioeconomic contribution through its underlying stakeholder interactions. In Germany, CSPs are a growing phenomenon and, at the same time, a niche in higher education with approximately 100,000 students. Higher education scholars identified CSPs a challenge to higher education governance despite the simultaneous lack of empirical data. In this vein, this book pursues the question of how stakeholders influence the governance of the third mission in the case of CSPs. The study in this book refers to the "prime" example of CSPs at a German university of applied sciences-the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University. The analysis revealed that four stakeholder groups are salient and influence the governance of the CSPs. These include professors, industry representatives, students, and representatives of government and higher education policy.
