This book presents an analysis of the social aspects of Carl Gustav
Jung's thought and its followers, the interpretation of the
phenomena of contemporary social life (social imagery) from the
perspective of the main categories of this thought (archetype,
unconscious, collectivity, mass society, mass man). It also
contains an attempt of their application for understanding
contemporary social and political phenomena (e.g. Brazilian
sebastianism, Balkan conflicts, virtual-imagery sphere of
communication, figures of imagery in popular culture, and others).
The authors examine the relationship between Jung's and Jungians'
(E. Neumann, J. Hillman, J. L. Henderson) conceptions and many
accompanying them (e.g. Frankfurt school, Bachelard's philosophy,
American cultural psychoanalysis) and the background of
contemporary social psychology, sociology, and cultural
anthropology.
The contributors to this book reveal how Buddhism has changed the
way they practice psychotherapy, choose their research topics, and
conduct their personal lives.
Jung became interested in gnosticism - and also alchemy - in an
attempt to understand what had happened to him during his
confrontation with the unconscious. "I had to find evidence for the
historical prefiguration of my inner experiences...If I had not
succeeded in finding any evidence, I would never have been able to
substantiate my ideas." He saw gnosticism and alchemy as historical
counterparts to depth psychology and as early confrontations with
the primordial world of the unconscious. This selection brings
together Jung's main writings on gnosticism and includes a special
introduction that attempts to explain the importance of gnostic
writings to Jung's work.
Gnosticism was for C.G. jung the chief prefiguration of his
analytical psychology. In this volume Robert Segal, an authority on
theories of myth and Gnosticism, has searched the Jungian corpus
for Jung's main discussions of this ancient form of spirituality.
The progression in Gnosticism from sheer bodily existence to the
release of the immaterial spark imprisoned in the body - and the
reunion of that spark with the godhead - represents for Jung the
psychological progression from ego consciousness to the ego's
rediscovery of the unconscious, and the ego's integration with the
unconscious to forge the self. Included in this volume are both
Jung's sole work devoted entirely to Gnosticism, "Gnostic Symbols
of the Self," and his own Gnostic myth, "Seven Sermons to the
Dead." The book also contains key essays by Father Victor White and
Gilles Quispel, whose "C.G. Jung und die Gnosis" is here translated
for the first time. In his extensive introduction Segal discusses
the parallel for Jung between ancient Gnostic and contemporary
Jungian patients, the Jungian meaning of Gnostic myths and of the
Seven Sermons, Jung's possible misinterpretation of Gnosticism, and
the common characterization of Jung himself as a Gnostic.
Where do myths come from? What is their function and what do they
mean? In this Very Short Introduction Robert Segal introduces the
array of approaches used to understand the study of myth. These
approaches hail from disciplines as varied as anthropology,
sociology, psychology, literary criticism, philosophy, science, and
religious studies. Including ideas from theorists as varied as
Sigmund Freud, Claude Levi-Strauss, Albert Camus, and Roland
Barthes, Segal uses the famous ancient myth of Adonis to analyse
their individual approaches and theories. In this new edition, he
not only considers the future study of myth, but also considers the
interactions of myth theory with cognitive science, the
implications of the myth of Gaia, and the differences between
story-telling and myth. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short
