R2,683 Discovery Miles 26 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A volume in Peace Education Series Editors Jing Lin, University of Maryland, Edward Brantmeier, James Madison University, and Ian Harris, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee This edited book is a new and valuable resource for students, teachers, and practitioners, providing a detailed exploration of how qualitative research can be applied in the field of peace and conflict studies. This book explores considerations and components of designing, conducting, and reporting qualitative research in this field, and also provide exemplars of recent empirical research in peace and conflict studies that employed qualitative methods. Scholars and researchers in peace and conflict studies and peace education face unique challenges in teaching, designing, and conducting qualitative research in these fields. This edited book discusses tips in designing qualitative studies in this area and for teaching emerging peace researchers best practices of qualitative inquiry. In addition, the book discusses some of the trends, challenges, and opportunities associated with research in peace and conflict studies and peace education. Written at a level appropriate for both graduate students and active researchers, the primary audience for this book is those teaching and learning about the application of qualitative methods to peace and conflict studies, as well as those conducting research in this field. There are currently approximately 230 graduate programs in peace and conflict studies. This book also provides a useful tool for researchers and students in other academic disciplines who are interested in qualitative research. Such disciplines might include education, sociology, criminology, gender studies, psychology, political science, and others.

Supply Chain Development for the Lean Enterprise - Interorganizational Cost Management (Hardcover): Robin Cooper Supply Chain Development for the Lean Enterprise - Interorganizational Cost Management (Hardcover)
Robin Cooper
R2,057 Discovery Miles 20 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Four questions determine whether a company is using interorganizational cost management.

  • Does your firm set specific cost-reduction objectives for its suppliers?

  • Does your firm help its customers and/or suppliers find ways to achieve their cost-education objectives?

  • Does your firm take into account the profitability of its suppliers when negotiating component pricing with them?

  • Is your firm continuously making its buyer-supplier interfaces more efficient?

If the answer to any of these questions is "no," your firm risks introducing products that cost too much or are not competitive. The full potential of the supply network can be realized only when the entire supply chain adopts interorganizational cost management practices.

Competitive pressure has led many firms to try to increase the efficiency of supplier firms through interorganizational cost management systems, a structured approach tocoordinating the activities of firms in a supplier network to reduce the total costs in the network.
It is particularly important to lean enterprises for two reasons:

  • Lean enterprises typically outsource more of the added value of their products than their mass producer counterparts.

  • Lean enterprises usually compete more aggressively and must manage costs more effectively.

Interorganizational cost management can reduce costs in three ways: through product design, through product manufacture and through cooperative approaches between buyers and suppliers to build smoother interfaces.
However, more than just cost management must cross interorganizational boundaries. Suppliers are also a major source ofinnovation for lean enterprises. Successful supplier networks encourage every firm in the network to innovate and compete more aggressively. Read this book to learn to manage the supply chain to forge competitive advantage while reducing costs.

Target Costing and Value Engineering (Hardcover): Robin Cooper Target Costing and Value Engineering (Hardcover)

What would happen if everyone in your company followed a disciplined approach to cost reduction? Go ahead -- imagine it. What would it look like? How can it be done?
The answer -- smart cost management.
Effective cost management must start at the design stage. As much as 90-95% of a product's costs are added in the design process. That is why effective cost management programs focus on design and manufacturing. The primary cost management method to control cost during design is a combination of target costing and value engineering.

Target Costing Objectives:

  1. Identify the cost at which your product must be manufactured at if it is to earn its profit margin at its expected target selling price.
  2. Break the target cost down to its component level and have your suppliers find ways to deliver the components they sell you at the set target prices while still making adequate returns.

Value Engineering:
"The connection to function: "An organized effort and team based approach to analyze the functions of goods and services that the design stage, and find ways to achieve those functions in a manner that allows the firm to meet its target costs.
"The result: "Added value for your company (development costs on-line with added value for your company; development costs on-line with selling prices) and added value for your customer (higher quality products that meet, possibly even exceed, customer expectations.)

From Perception to Communication - A Theory of Types for Action and Meaning (Hardcover): Robin Cooper From Perception to Communication - A Theory of Types for Action and Meaning (Hardcover)

This book characterizes a notion of type that covers both linguistic and non-linguistic action, and lays the foundations for a theory of action based on a Theory of Types with Records (TTR). Robin Cooper argues that a theory of language based on action allows the adoption of a perspective on linguistic content that is centred on interaction in dialogue; this approach is crucially different to the traditional view of natural languages as essentially similar to formal languages such as logics developed by philosophers or mathematicians. At the same time, he claims that the substantial technical advantages made by the formal language view of semantics can be incorporated into the action-based view, and that this can lead to important improvements in both intuitive understanding and empirical coverage. This enterprise uses types rather than possible worlds as commonly employed in studies of the semantics of natural language. Types are more tractable than possible worlds and offer greater potential for understanding the implementation of semantics both on machines and in biological brains.

Language in Flux - Dialogue Coordination, Language Variation, Change and Evolution (Paperback, New): Robin Cooper, Kem Language in Flux - Dialogue Coordination, Language Variation, Change and Evolution (Paperback, New)
Robin Cooper, Kem
R912 Discovery Miles 9 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The papers in this collection present a view of language as an evolving system within which flexibility is systemic and subject to progressive change, driven by pressures of every-day coordinative action as in conversational dialogue. As these papers demonstrate, these pressures provide a force for variation, hence for adaptation, and change. Topics covered include formal and game-theoretical models of evolution, diachronic studies of change (semantic, syntactic, lexical) and the role of dialogue factors in promoting such change, psycholinguistic experimental methods probing the nature of coordination in both language and non-language based interaction, formal modelling of dialogue, and probabilistic studies of language variation. Authors include highly influential researchers: Joan Bresnan, Devyani Sharma and Ashwini Deo; Robin Cooper and Aarne Ranta; Ronnie Cann and Ruth Kempson; Miriam Bouzouita; Jonathan Ginzburg and Zoran Macura; Patrick Healey; Gerhard Jaeger; Simon Kirby, Hannah Cornish and Kenny Smith; Staffan Larson; Elizabeth Traugott. Together these papers present a cross-disciplinary synergy reflecting the view that human linguistic behaviour is essentially coordinative, and, within this general perspective, that language is a system of intrinsic flexibility, hence perpetually in a state of flux. This view involves a radical shift in assumptions away from the traditional view that language competence is a static system relative to which the dynamics of language performance has to be defined; and each paper, in its own way, explores what is involved in modifying such a clear-cut division.
