Powell and Pressburger offered this 'propaganda' piece as their contribution to the war effort, but the authorities were unsure how its oddball tone would go down with the Allies. In '49th Parallel' (1941), Laurence Olivier and Leslie Howard are among the stars who try to prevent Nazi sailors, from a sunken U-Boat, reaching neutral USA through Canada in this classic war film, which was intended to persuade America to join World War II. Pressburger won an Academy Award for the story and the film was directed by Powell. In 'I Know Where I'm Going!' (1945), a woman (Wendy Hiller) has always known what she wanted in life, and now she is about to marry a millionaire. But when she ends up stranded on a Hebredian island due to a storm, she begins to see things a little differently. 'Ill Met By Moonlight' (1957) was the final film created by Powell and Pressburger together. Set on the island of Crete during the Nazi occupation, the film stars Dirk Bogarde and David Oxley as British officers assigned to kidnap the German commander-in-chief General Kreipe (Marius Goring) and spirit him back to Cairo. If successful, the morale of the Germans would be weakened and the resistance would be stronger. But once he is captured, the British officers have to get him past German patrols at almost every turning. In 'The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp' (1943), stuffy ex-soldier Clive Candy (Roger Livesey) recalls his career which began as a dashing officer in the Boer War. As a young man he lost the woman he loved (Deborah Kerr, who plays three roles) to a Prussian officer (Anton Walbrook), whom he fought in a duel only to become lifelong friends with. Candy cannot help but feel that his notions of honour and chivalry are out of place in modern warfare. The film's title comes from 'Evening Standard' cartoonist David Low's satirical comic creation, Colonel Blimp. In 'The Red Shoes' (1948), ballet impressario Boris Lermontov (Walbrook) hires up-and-coming ballerina Victoria Page (Moira Shearer) and talented young composer Julian Craster (Goring) to work with him on a new ballet, an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen story 'The Red Shoes'. The show is a great success and Victoria and Julian fall in love, but Boris is jealous and makes moves to spoil their happiness. 'A Matter of Life and Death' (1946) is a classic wartime propaganda movie, commissioned by the Ministry of Information, but turned into a fantastical allegory by the Archers, aka Powell and Pressburger. David Niven plays an RAF pilot who is ready to be picked up by the angels after bailing out of his plane. But an administrative error in Heaven leads to a temporary reprieve, during which he must prove his right to stay on Earth. A tribunal in heaven ensues to decide the case. In 'They're a Weird Mob' (1966), Nino Culotta (Walter Chiari) is an Italian immigrant who arrives in Australia with the promise of a job as a journalist on his cousin's magazine, only to find that when he gets there the magazine has folded, the cousin has done a runner and the money his cousin sent for the fare was borrowed from the daughter of the boss of a local construction firm. 'The Tales of Hoffman' (1951) is an adaptation of Jacques Offenbach's opera and follows Hoffman's (Robert Rounseville) tales of his love for the doll Olympia, the courtesan Giuletta (Ludmilla Tcherina) and the frail diva Antonia (Anne Ayars), and of how his quest for the eternal woman was always thwarted by evil. Finally, in 'Black Narcissus' (1946), a group of British nuns are sent into the Himalayas to set up a mission in what was once the harem's quarters of an ancient palace. The clear mountain air, the unfamiliar culture and the unbridled sensuality of a young prince (Sabu) and his beggar-girl lover (Jean Simmons) begin to play havoc with the nuns' long-suppressed emotions. Whilst the young Mother Superior, Sister Clodagh (Deborah Kerr), fights a losing battle for order, the jaunty David Farrar falls in love with her, sparking uncontrollable jealousy in another nun, Sister Ruth (Kathleen Byron).

Another adventure for everyone's favourite Time Lord. The arrival on Earth of a UFO brings with it the Axons - golden-skinned aliens who offer the gift of Axonite to mankind. The Doctor (Jon Pertwee) is suspicious, especially when he discovers that his old enemy the Master (Roger Delgado) is on board the Axon craft.

Robert Day directs this British sci-fi horror. Manning the experimental Y-13 aircraft, intrepid test pilot Dan Prescott (Bill Edwards) flies deeper into space than any man before him. After losing radio contact with mission control, and being bombarded by mysterious cosmic rays, Dan's wrecked craft is recovered hours later back on Earth with the pilot nowhere to be found. However, a spate of gruesome attacks on cattle and then humans, by a bloodthirsty creature, suggests Dan is still alive, if in a somewhat changed form...

The Master (Roger Delgado) has stolen some top secret information giving details of one of the most destructive weapons in the known universe, and it is up to the Doctor (Jon Pertwee) to get that information back. The Doctor's quest takes him to the planet Uxarieus, where he becomes caught up in a dispute between the human settlers and the Interplanetary Mining Corporation. Meanwhile, the Master remains at large, and with murderous robots and rampant lizards to contend with, the Doctor's search for the all-important doomsday machine become evermore difficult.

The Doctor (Jon Pertwee) investigates, and soon finds himself up against his nemesis, The Master, in a battle to control a powerful sacred crystal. In the four-parter 'Underworld', the TARDIS lands the Doctor (Tom Baker) in a Minyan spaceship that is on a quest to find the Minyan race banks stored in a missing ship known as the P7E. They eventually find what they are looking for in a cave system at the centre of a newly-formed planet. But the P7E's computer has ideas of its own, and doesn't look kindly upon its new visitors.

In 'Doctor Who and the Silurians' (1970), Jon Pertwee stars as the third Doctor, who is called to an atomic research station in Derbyshire to investigate a series of mysterious events. His questions uncover a vicious ring of in-house saboteurs and something a bit more slimy. In 'The Sea Devils' (1972), after visiting their old enemy the Master (Roger Delgado) in his remote island prison, the Doctor (Pertwee) and Jo learn of several recent accidents at sea, all of which have been accompanied by reported sightings of strange monsters. The Doctor discovers that the creatures responsible are the Sea Devils, acquatic cousins of the Silurians who are out to reclaim the planet Earth from mankind. In 'Warriors of the Deep' (1983), The Doctor (Peter Davison), Tegan and Turlough arrive at an underwater base on an Earth in the future on the brink of Atomic War. Helping to trigger this war are the planet's original inhabitants, the Silurians and the Sea Devils, aided by their killer pantomime horse, the Myrka.

First in the series of films based on the cartoon creations of Ronald Searle. Miss Millicent Fritton (Alastair Sim), headmistress of St Trinian's School for Girls, attempts to stave off her creditors by 'looking after' the pocket money of a wealthy sheikh's daughter currently enrolled at the school, and investing it on the sheikh's horse, Arab Boy, in the local derby. Unfortunately, Miss Fritton's bookmaking brother Clarence (also Sim) has backed another horse, and kidnaps Arab Boy to ensure his own sizeable win. Miss Fritton enlists the help of disreputable boot boy Flash Harry (George Cole), the teaching staff and the Old Girls in rescuing Arab Boy and returning him to the race.

In 'The Belles of St Trinians' (1954), Miss Millicent Fritton (Alastair Sim), headmistress of St Trinian's School for Girls, attempts to stave off her creditors by 'looking after' the pocket money of a wealthy sheikh's daughter currently enrolled at the school, and investing it on the sheikh's horse, Arab Boy, in the local derby. In 'Blue Murder at St Trinians' (1956), the anarchic schoolgirls win a UNESCO prize trip to Rome. Upon arrival they become involved with a jewel thief (Lionel Jeffries) who hides out with the school, disguised as the headmistress. The jolly hockey sticks are being waved with malicious force once again in 'The Pure Hell of St Trinians' (1957). After they burn their school down, the girls are sent to the Middle East, where an Arab sheik tries to lure them into his harem. Flash Harry (George Cole) attempts to come to the rescue, only to find himself stranded on a desert island with a familiar member of the constabulary (Joyce Grenfell). In the 1966 film 'The Great St Trinians Train Robbery', a bunch of crooks take on more than they can handle when they decide to bury the loot from a successful robbery in the grounds of St Trinians. The high-spirited girls (or 'hooligans' as they are sometimes known) take it upon themselves to confront the highly-strung criminals, with devastating and comic effect.
