Compelling evidence exists to support the hypothesis that both
formal and informal mentoring practices that provide access to
information and resources are effective in promoting career
advancement, especially for women. Such associations provide
opportunities to improve the status, effectiveness, and visibility
of a faculty member via introductions to new colleagues, knowledge
of information about the organizational system, and awareness of
innovative projects and new challenges.
This volume developed from the symposium "Successful Mentoring
Strategies to Facilitate the Advancement of Women Faculty" held at
the 239th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in San
Francisco in March 2010. The organizers of the symposium, also
serving as the editors of this volume, aimed to feature an array of
successful mechanisms for enhancing the leadership, visibility, and
recognition of academic women scientists using various mentoring
strategies. It was their goal to have contributors share creative
approaches to address the challenge of broadening the participation
and advancement of women in science and engineering at all career
stages and from a wide range of institutional types. Inspired by
the successful outcomes of the editors' own NSF-ADVANCE project
that involved the formation of horizontal peer mentoring alliances,
this book is a collection of valuable practices and insights to
both share how their horizontal mentoring strategy has impacted
their professional and personal lives and to learn of other
effective mechanisms for advancing women faculty.
This important new book introduces students to the fundamental
ideas of heterodox economics, presented in a clear and accessible
way by top heterodox scholars. It offers not only a critique of the
dominant approach to economics, but also a positive and
constructive alternative. Students interested in an explanation of
the real world will find the heterodox approach not only
satisfying, but ultimately better able to explain a money-using
economy prone to periods of instability and crises. Key features of
this textbook include: A non-conventional understanding of economic
analysis on a number of relevant topics Deep and convincing
criticism of orthodox thinking Discussion of the crucial importance
of money, banking and finance today Analysis of the roots of the
2008 global financial crisis A presentation of the features of
sustainable development. Students of economics at all levels can
use this textbook to deepen their understanding of the heterodox
approach, the fundamental roots of the 2008 global financial crisis
and the need to rethink economics afresh.
Gender and the Life Course is an interdisciplinary collection of
essays on the lives of women and men as they are affected by
history, culture, demography, economic and political
stratification, and the biopsychological processes that attend
maturation and aging. The book covers three major topics. Part I,
which examines gender and the life course in broad historical
perspective, includes a summary of recent work in biological
ecology and primatology, and an analysis of the persistence of
cultural and gender differences in role organization in societies
undergoing the transition from agrarianism to industrialism. Other
essays trace the changes in sources of household income of
industrial workers over the life span, and review temporal and
gender differences in life span transitions.
Part II examines gender differentiation in a variety of
contexts: psychological, psychobiologi-cal, and sociological. Alice
Rossi's ASA Presidential Address reviews recent work on fathering
and mothering, and argues that sociological explanations of such
gender differences need supplementation by concepts from
evolutionary theory and the neurosciences. Three essays deal with
gender and economy: one shows how gender stratification took hold
in the early stages of industrialization in France, another
demonstrates the persistence of gender stratification in modern
economies, the third focuses on ideology in relation to gender and
political power.
Part III examines various aspects of the aged in contemporary
society, including an argument for an jnterpretive social science
that uses diverse methods to improve our ability to describe and
interpret many facets of the lives of elderly men and women; a
review of the methodology used to study changes in the aged
population over time; and an overview of existing data sets that
permit further cohort and longitudinal analyses of the aged. The
final essays review social policies as they affect the elderly,
with particular attention to the fact that most very old people are
women, and the impact of the greatly expanded life course for
family and kin relations.
"Gender and the Life Course "is a state-of-the-art assessment
of the best work currently being done' on gender and age a's
maturational factors and is essential reading for anyone interested
in adult development and gender roles.

This book introduces the physics and technology of the
High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC), highlighting the most
recent modifications that shaped the final configuration, which is
now in the advanced stages of its construction. This new
High-Luminosity configuration of the LHC is the major accelerator
project of this decade and will give new life to the LHC after its
first fifteen years of operation, allowing for more precise
measurements of the Higgs Boson and extending the mass limit reach
for new particles. The LHC is such a highly optimized machine that
upgrading it requires breakthroughs in many areas. Unsurprisingly,
the High-Luminosity LHC required a long R&D period to bring
into life an innovative accelerator magnet, based on Nb3Sn and
capable of generating fields in the 11-12 T range, as well as many
other new accelerator technologies such as superconducting compact
RF crab cavities, advanced collimation concepts, a novel powering
technology based on high temperature superconducting links, and
others. The book is a self-consistent series of papers, which
addresses all technology and design issues. Each paper can be read
separately as well. The first few papers provide a summary of the
whole project, the physics motivation, and the accelerator
challenges. Altogether, this book brings the reader to the heart of
the technologies that will also be key for the next generation of
hadron colliders. This book is an essential reference for physicists
and engineers in the field of hadron colliders and LHC related
issues and can also be read by postgraduate students.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the highest energy collider ever
built. It resides near Geneva in a tunnel 3.8m wide, with a
circumference of 26.7km, which was excavated in 1983-1988 to
initially house the electron-positron collider LEP. The LHC was
approved in 1995, and it took until 2010 for reliable operation. By
now, a larger set of larger integrated luminosities have been
accumulated for physics analyses in the four collider experiments:
ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and ALICE.The LHC operates with an extended
cryogenic plant, using a multi-stage injection system comprising
the PS and SPS accelerators (still in use for particle physics
experiments at lower energies). The beams are guided by 1232
superconducting high field dipole magnets.Intense works are
underway in preparation of the High Luminosity LHC, aimed at
upgrading the LHC and detectors for collecting ten times more
luminosity, and extending the collider life to the early 2040's. So
far, the (HL-)LHC project represents a cumulation of around one
hundred thousand person-years of innovative work by technicians,
engineers, and physicists from all over the world; probably the
largest scientific effort ever in the history of humanity. The book
is driven by the realisation of the unique value of this
accelerator complex and by the recognition of the status of high
energy physics, described by a Standard Model — which still
leaves too many questions unanswered to be the appropriate theory
of elementary particles and their interactions.Following the
Introduction are: three chapters which focus on the initial decade
of operation, leading to the celebrated discovery of the Higgs
Boson, on the techniques and physics of the luminosity upgrade, and
finally on major options - of using the LHC in a concurrent, power
economic, electron-hadron scattering mode, when upgraded to higher
energies or eventually as an injector for the next big machine. The
various technical and physics chapters, provided by 61 authors,
characterise the fascinating opportunities the LHC offers for the
next two decades ahead (possibly longer), with the goal to
substantially advance our understanding of nature.
