St. Alphonsus Liguori's Moral Theology has long been praised and held in the highest regard by the Church, covering every moral question of his day. Mediatrix Press is pleased to bring you the first English Translation of this excellent work, once widely read but relegated to obscurity on account of the loss of Latin fluency in Western Society. Volume 1 embraces the first three Books of Alphonsus' Moral Theology. Bl. Pope Pius IX declared: "Focusing his mind on the glory of God and the spiritual salvation of men he wrote many books, related with holy erudition and piety, whose opinions were between those embraced by both more lax and rigid theologians, to fortify the safe path by which the confessors of Christ's faithful could advance without dashing their foot upon a stone. [Apostolic Letter Honoring St. Alphonsus with the title of Doctor of the Church]

De Controversiis I - On the Roman Pontiff (Hardcover): Ryan Grant (Translator), S.J., St. Robert Bellarmine De Controversiis I - On the Roman Pontiff (Hardcover)
Ryan Grant (Translator), S.J., St. Robert Bellarmine
R1,515 Discovery Miles 15 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this Theological treatise St. Robert Bellarmine takes on Protestant as well as Greek Orthodox objections to the Papacy in five books. In the first, he argues that Christ established the Primacy of Peter by means of an Ecclesiastical Monarchy, why it is fitting that the Church's government should be a monarchy; Exegetical Commentary on the Lord's words in Matthew 16 and John 21, along with copious Patristic testimony. In Book 2 is whether Peter has successors in the Ecclesiastical Monarchy, wherein Bellarmine defends the Church's position on the true history of Peter; that Peter truly went to Rome; that Peter was truly a Bishop there. In Book 3 Bellarmine shows the Pope is not Antichrist. In Book 4, Bellarmine argues why the Pope is infallible when he defines a doctrine on faith and morals and proceeds to defend Popes whom Protestants and others argued had erred while defining faith. In book 5, Bellarmine takes up the question of the Popes' power in civil affairs.

R1,071 Discovery Miles 10 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This catechism can be considered as a valid and effective catechetical tool for the work of the evangelization, a work which has to be realized with a new missionary zeal towards those who don't know the Catholic faith and as well towards those who know it defectively and insufficiently. May those who will read this catechism and those who will use it in the noble and meritorious work of teaching Christian doctrine, may be equipped with the sure and sacred doctrine of the Catholic faith, in order to stand, having their loins girt about with truth. -Bishop Athanasius Schneider This is the first English translation of St. Robert Bellarmine's Long Catechism, which follows a traditional question and answer model but gives deep meditations on the truths of faith. It was written for students with some education as well as for those who would teach Catechism. It was explicitly approved by Pope Clement VIII and praised by Pope Benedict XIV and Pius XI. St. Robert Bellarmine is a doctor of the Church.

"The fact that even after Vatican II authors repeatedly referred to Franzelin meant that the work of Franzelin himself must be studied in depth in order to make any claim that one has done the proper research to speak with any authority on the topic of Tradition." -Fr. Chad Ripperger, PhD Cardinal Franzelin was a peritus at the First Vatican Council, and was made a Cardinal by Bl. Pope Pius IX. He was also an expert in Hebrew and a lecturer in Chaldean and Syriac. His lectures and theological writings held first place in the Roman Theological scene of his day. In 26 Theses, Cardinal Franzelin challenges the Protestant notion that Tradition is opposed to Scripture, by a direct analysis of the establishment of a living magisterium in Scripture, and the witness to this magisterium given by the Fathers of the Church and all Christian ages.

The Complete Works of Saint Cyprian of Carthage (Paperback): Cyprian, Saint Cyprian of Carthage The Complete Works of Saint Cyprian of Carthage (Paperback)
Cyprian, Saint Cyprian of Carthage; Edited by Phillip Campbell; Introduction by Ryan Grant
R1,151 Discovery Miles 11 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Born about the year AD 200, Thascus Caecillius Cyprianus was the scion of an ancient and noble Roman family living in North Africa. A convert to Christianity in mid-life, Cyprian was acclaimed bishop of Carthage during a time of intense Empire-wide persecution by the Roman imperial authorities under the emperor Decius. In the twelve year span between his conversion and his martyrdom in AD 258 during the reign of Valerian, Cyprian wrote some of the most important foundational documents of the ante-Nicene Church. This volume contains the entirety of Saint Cyprian's writing--13 treatises and all of his correspondence, 82 letters in all. It also includes "The Life and Passion of Saint Cyprian" by his companion, Pontius the Deacon, as well as the minutes of the Seventh Council of Carthage over which Cyprian presided. His writings encompass the major issues of his day including the Roman persecutions, the unity of the Church, dealing with those who renounced the faith under threat from the state (the lapsi), the Novatian heresy and the rebaptism controversy. His correspondents included the most illustrious men of the early Latin Church, including three Popes--Cornelius, Stephen I, and Sixtus II. Read and cited frequently by theologians down through the ages, Saint Cyprian's writings are of surpassing authority and were considered works of genius "brighter than the sun" by Saint Jerome. Aside from their obvious ecclesiastical import, the works of Cyprian also offer a detailed and unique glimpse into Roman society at the height of the anti-Christian persecutions and demonstrate the growth and struggles of the early Church during a time of intense external political pressure. Based on the translation originally published as part of The Ante-Nicene Fathers 1885], this new edition includes a new introduction, updated commentary, an updated bibliography, and several new appendices including "The Quotable Cyprian."

On the Canonization and Veneration of the Saints (Hardcover): Mediatrix Press, Ryan Grant (Translator), St. Robert Bellarmine On the Canonization and Veneration of the Saints (Hardcover)
Mediatrix Press, Ryan Grant (Translator), St. Robert Bellarmine
R946 Discovery Miles 9 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

St. Robert Bellarmine's work in defense of the saints, their place in heaven, their canonization and veneration, etc., ranks like all of his works among the classical works of Catholic Theology. In this work, Bellarmine meets the attack of Protestantism against Catholic teaching on the saints, firstly on their own ground with sound Scriptural Exegesis, backed up by the witness of the Greek and Latin Church. The great counter-reformation doctor begins the work with a treatise on whether the souls of the saints receive a particular judgment and go to heaven or await for the end of time suspended as it were in some hidden place; then what canonization is, who does it and what is its authority; then lastly, whether the saints may be venerated and invoked.
