Sarah Birch assesses the impact of electoral system design on political change in post-communist Europe. Since the collapse of communism in Central and Eastern Europe between 1989 and 1991, virtually all the states in the region have undertaken significant electoral reform. This study traces the multiple links between the evolution of electoral systems and political change and establishes patterns in the effects of electoral system design on post-communist developments.
Embodying Democracy analyzes the politics of electoral reform in eight postcommunist states including Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, and Ukraine. By exploring the multiple factors that shaped the design of electoral institutions during the first ten years of postcommunist transition, it accounts for an important element of the postcommunist reform process and illuminates general features of institutional design in post-transition states.
This study offers an analysis of the UK's current economic policy
options and a plan for improving life for ordinary citizens via a
sensible and realistic understanding of governments' limited
ability to manage economic performance. It provides a manifesto
which political parties could immediately adopt to make life better
for all.

Electoral Systems and Political Transformation in Post-Communist
Europe assesses the influence of electoral systems on political
change in 20 post-communist European states. The main finding is
that electoral institutions have systematic effects on the
formation of representative structures. 'Party-enabling' aspects of
electoral laws such as list proportional representation tend to
foster popular inclusion in politics and institutionalized party
systems, whereas 'politician-enabling' rules such as single-member
districts and ballots that allow voters to select individuals often
favour the development of weakly structured systems and high levels
of popular exclusion from the representative process.
There is a large increase in interest in acupuncture by health care consumers. The three main reasons for this are medical effectiveness, cost effectiveness and the credibility that clinical trials and physiological research have provided. Acupuncture is rapidly moving out of the arena of "alternative" medicine, in large part again because it is grounded more firmly than other alternative treatments in research. The book provides the reader with the up-to-date information on the clinical bases of acupuncture.

Methods for identification and measurement of existing and newly
discovered contaminants are required, especially those that are
cheap, simple and rapid, so that testing may be more frequent
within the food supply chain. This book examines the formation of
toxic compounds during the processing of food and strategies to
mitigate their creation. Modification of process conditions can
reduce the health risks posed by these compounds to consumers. This
new volume will update knowledge on current methods for mitigation
of these process contaminants and is aimed at industrialists in
food processing, academic researchers and graduate students
studying food science and technology or food engineering.
