This collection on the privatization of property ownership seeks to explore the middle ground between state socialism and corporate capitalism. "A Fourth Way?" examines the transition to market economies in post-Communist Eastern Europe and considers Western experiences with alternative forms of ownership. The contributors to this study argue that neither the market alone nor state planning is adequate, in economic or moral terms, as the exclusive means to regulate the economy. This began with investigations by E. Schroder (1870/71) which he made, when he studied Newton's method. But only, when Fatou and Julia applied set theory as well as Paul Montel's theory of normal families, it was possible to develop a global approach to the iteration of rational maps. The relationship between psychoanalysis and history is long-standing, productive and controversial. From Freud onward, psychoanalytic thinkers have looked to history for insights into the operations of the human mind. Historians have been more equivocal about the value of psychoanalysis for their discipline. But recent decades have seen a growing interest in psychoanalysis across the Humanities. The plans for this study were formulated between I956 and I958. For some time then, I had been interested in the processes of personal and social accommodation and in the factors that were responsible for resistance to change. While a graduate student at Columbia University at that time, I was also affiliated with a multidisciplinary research group at Cornell University Medical Colleges studying the reactions of people of various cultural and social backgrounds to situations of stress. The Hungarian refugees were one of the groups being studied. I thus decided to undertake a study of the process of acculturation, the Hungarian refugees providing an ideal population. I did not expect to encounter any serious difficulties. Needless to say, the work was beset with every sort of diWculty, financial, conceptual, etc., that usually accompanies research projects. It is only now, more than a decade later, that I am able to present my findings in their final form.
