Air accidents and disasters are often attributed to 'pilot error'. The author argues that such 'blamism' may obscure the underlying cause(s) of a disaster, as errors can also be induced through bad design, poor training, unrealistic rosters, sub-standard maintenance and other factors totally outside the control of the flight crew. This book combines systems theory with research data and case studies and is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the aetiology of air disasters.

Ready to reclaim your dreams and rediscover your life's purpose? Then look no further than Denise S. Bennett's A Chosen Seed: from Mustard Seed to Abundance, a compilation inspired by the life of family matriarch Carrie Lee Shaw Troy and in honor of her 100th birthday. The book presents literally hundreds of Grannyisms, sayings that inspire peace, give comfort and provide guidance for achieving prosperity in one's personal and professional life. Born of the hardships of a life begun in abject poverty yet managing to possess modern-day relevance with astonishing clarity, the book's Grannyisms are built around the central metaphor of the mustard seed and its extraordinary real-life strength. Author Bennett connects these age-old words of wisdom and family anecdotes with valuable lessons and truths for today's challenges. Originating from a combination of both time and place, this wisdom shaped the centenarian's beliefs and choices, and as those concepts that spoke to her with the greatest power became intertwined with life experience, she was provided with the foundation necessary to impart her wonderfully insightful philosophy to subsequent generations. These Grannyisms are brought to life with such topics as soil preparation (or foundation building), planting, watering, nurturing, fruitfulness, pruning, and abundance. In every stage, the core notion is that every obstacle is an opportunity, and that no matter what life brings, abundance and prosperity are available to those with the faith to believe. The focus on looking for the good in a bad situation, along with the importance of reflecting on past experience to excel in the present, is a timeless concept that inspires and informs even today. A reminder of the healing power within, A Chosen Seed is an exceptional gift of guidance and sustenance. Presented in the words of an ordinary - yet extraordinary - person whose remarkable view of life is a reminder that everyone has the power to achieve what may seem impossible to grow from a simple mustard seed into abundance. A Chosen Seed teaches that when we strive to do our very best, an abundant life is, and has always been, ours for the taking. www.dsbennett.com
One true thing since the terrorist attacks on 9/11 is that the world has changed. Consequently, the US military's ability to adapt is paramount. For instance, in Operation Iraqi Freedom, the US and coalition forces are faced with an unanticipated insurgency unlike any they have faced before. This insurgency is proving to be resilient and difficult to defeat. The purpose of this paper is to employ innovative thinking in an effort to help solve this insurgency dilemma. It will do this by proving that border security is a key component to suppressing the Iraqi insurgency and that border security operations have been hindered by the lack of interagency coordination. As a solution, this paper will propose the formation of a border security interagency working group. This working group would act as the focal point for all border security issues and would have the responsibility of developing a comprehensive border security strategy. Finally, this paper will propose that a border security air component should be a part and under the control of the Iraq Department of Border Enforcement (DBE).
Between May and October of 1917, three young shepherds were reportedly visited six times by an apparition of the Virgin Mary near the town of Fatima in Portugal. At the final apparition event, approximately 70,000 visitors gathered to witness a prophesied miracle intended to convince the public that the children's visions were of divine origin. The miracle took the form of a solar anomaly; witnesses claimed that the sun began to "dance." Exploring the early development of the cult of the Virgin of Fatima and the overthrow of the liberal, secular government by pro-Catholic elements, Jeffrey Bennett offers the first book-length scholarly study of the cult's relationship to the rise of authoritarian politics in Portugal. "When the Sun Danced "offers a fascinating look at the cultural dynamics that informed one of the most turbulent periods in the nation's history.
Maybe you were born to Christian parents and raised as a Christian. Or maybe you are just a part of a Christian nation. You might have attended church regularly, or maybe just on special occasions. If asked, you say that you believe in God, but you really never thought about what that means exactly. You are a well-educated person who accepts the idea of Biblical miracles, but only the more "reasonable" ones. You have read some of the Bible, mostly just parts of the New Testament, but never committed to reading the Bible cover to cover. You are a good person who admires the many "Christian values" as demonstrated by Jesus Christ. But something does not feel right. * Science tells us that the universe is 13.7 billion years old, but the Bible tells us it's 6,000 years old. * Science tells us life is the result of emergent properties in combined molecules, and we have evolved from a very primitive life form, but the Bible says that God made us, as is, from dust, and blew life in our noses. * You see a world where little bunnies burn to death in forest fires, and wonder why an all-good and loving God would allow such a thing to happen. * You pray to God and you realize that sometimes your prayers are answered, and sometimes they aren't just as if you didn't pray at all. * You hear about other religions and wonder why your religion is right and every other religion on the planet is wrong. * You have a real problem with the idea of all your non-Jesus-believing friends and family spending eternity in Hell.? In fact, the more you look around, the more you see a world absent of this perfect image of a perfect God. As much as you want to avoid critical thinking and "just let go and have faith," you find that you cannot believe in something contrary to your logic and reason no matter how much you want to. This might lead to feelings of guilt, insincerity, and/or hypocrisy. Yet you just can't imagine living life without God, and you don't have to. When you start asking serious questions about God and religion, you begin to see through the stories of people living inside the stomachs of big fish, 900-year-old men, and bodies coming back to life after three days, and understand how man created God, and not the other way around. By daring to question "sacred" religion, challenging your childhood beliefs, and risking eternal damnation (okay, so there might be a minor side effect to reading this book), you will discover an appreciation for religion on a new level, as well as a renewed appreciation for the human race. Through a unique blend of science, philosophy, theology, and a touch of humor, you will see how you can trust your logic and reason, be true to yourself, and embrace God -- not as a being, but as a concept -- The Concept.
This book provides an introduction to many aspects of computer control. It covers techniques or control algorithm design and tuning of controllers; computer communications; parallel processing; and software design and implementation. The theoretical material is supported by case studies co ering power systems control, robot manipulators, liquid natural as vaporisers, batch control of chemical processes; and active control of aircraft. The book is suitable for practising engineers, postgraduate students and third year undergraduates specialising in control systems. It assumes some knowledge of control systems theory and computer hardware. |
