This fascinating and innovative book explores the relationship
between the philosophical underpinnings of Advaita Vedanta, Zen
Buddhism and the experiential journey of spiritual practitioners.
Taking the perspective of the questioning student, the author
highlights the experiential deconstructive processes that are
ignited when students' "everyday" dualistic thought structures are
challenged by the non-dual nature of these teachings and practices.
Although Advaita Vedanta and Zen Buddhism are ontologically
different, this unique study shows that in the dynamics of the
practice situation they are phenomenologically similar. Distinctive
in scope and approach Advaita Vedanta and Zen Buddhism:
Deconstructive Modes of Spiritual Inquiry examines Advaita and Zen
as living practice traditions in which foundational non-dual
philosophies are shown "in action" in contemporary Western practice
situations thus linking abstract philosophical tenets to concrete
living experience. As such it takes an important step toward
bridging the gap between scholarly analysis and the experiential
reality of these spiritual practices. >
Harry has been running Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment
programs for over thirty years. It is from this professional
mindset that he shares his insights from the Bible. First he walks
the reader through the scriptures on how we are made in the image
of God but are fallen. Then he integrates our design and sin nature
with Jesus' teaching in the Parable of the Sower, where Jesus
identifies four different spiritual conditions. Lastly, he takes
the reader through a clinical observation of reviewing Jesus' work
with each of the four types of spiritual conditions. This book is
not about drugs. It is about how we are all damaged and in need of
a recovery program. He shows how Jesus as the "Wonderful Counselor"
models the delivery of this recovery program. He was Director of
Counseling at White Deer Run (Allenwood, Pa.) for ten years. For
over twenty years he has been the Drug and Alcohol Treatment
Manager at the State Correctional Institution at Muncy, which is a
women's prison. He has earned his B.A. degree in Psychology from
Millersville University and his M.A. Degree in Counseling from
Liberty University. His Masters Degree was from a Christian
perspective and his studies included two Masters level theology
courses. From 9/94 through 5/03 he taught two Drug & Alcohol
courses at Lycoming College. He has been a Certified Addictions
Counselor since 1979, a Certified Clinical Supervisor since 1995
and a Licensed Professional Counselor since 2002. He has studied
the entire Bible from 1982 to 1985 and has served as a Deacon,
Elder and Bible Study and Sunday School teacher. Harry has been
married to Carla for over thirty-seven years and they have two
children and two grandchildren. They reside in Milton, Pa. "In God
We Trust." He can be contacted at [email protected].
Despite the wall of evidence that bank mergers add little or no
value, yet investors and management continue to fuel the
consolidation wave. This book draws on the actual experience of
senior executives in over 30 banks with extensive merger experience
to demonstrate how most mergers do in fact fail to meet objectives.
It explores in detail the issues of strategic positioning, cost and
revenue synergies, due diligence, IT selection and conversion,
people selection, cultural conflict, leadership, and the decision
making time frame. The book concludes that experienced and
determined leadership, significant net cost savings, swift decision
making and the cost of IT integration are key variables for
success. It also suggests that the prospect of more cross border
mergers and modest short term cost savings argues for a new pact
between investors and bank management.
SHORT DESCRIPTION:
Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a data plane and control
technology that is used in packet (that is Internet Protocol)
networks. Now over ten years old, it has taken root firmly as a
fundamental tool in many service provider networks. The last ten
years have seen a considerable consolidation of MPLS techniques and
protocols. This has resulted in the abandoning of some of the
original features of MPLS, and the development of other new
features. MPLS has moved from a prospective solution, to a grown-up
technology. Now that MPLS has reached this level of maturity, these
new tools and features allow more sophisticated services to the
users of the network. These tools and features are discussed within
various contexts throughout several networking-related books
published by MK and this presents us with a unique publishing
opportunity.
The proposed book is a best-of-the-best collection of existing
content from several books MK has published in recent years on MPLS
technology (multi-label protocol switching). Individual chapters on
MPLS technology are derived from a handful of MK books and are
combined in one new volume in a way that makes sense as a reference
work for those interested in new and developing aspects of this
technology, i.e., network operators and designers who need to
determine which aspects of their networks would benefit from MPLS
technology and applications. It also serves as a definitive
reference for engineers implementing MPLS-based products.
This book represents a quick and efficient way to bring valuable
content together from leading experts in the field while creating a
one-stop-shopping opportunity for customers to receive the
information they would otherwise need to round up from separate
sources. Suitable and current content will be collected from the
following titles: Evans, Deploying IP and MPLS QoS (2006); Farrel,
GMPLS (2005); Ash, Traffic Engineering (2006); Vasseur, Network
Recovery (2005); Farrel, The Internet and Its Protocols (2004);
Nadeau, MPLS Management (2003); and Davie, MPLS Technology and
Applications (2000). These chapters will be updated where necessary
and two new chapters will be added at the beginning and the end of
the book to bring the content into focus and discuss next
generation developments.
* Coverage of major applications of MPLS such as traffic
engineering, VPNs, IP integration, GMPLS, and QoS written by
leading experts in the field contributes to your practical
knowledge of this key technology
* Shows you how to implement various MPLS applications that will
result in saving your organization time and money
* Shows you how you can evaluate MPLS applications and techniques
in relation to one another so you can develop an optimum network
design
This book is the fourth in a series of essay collections on
defences in private law. It addresses defences to liability arising
in equity. The essays range from those adopting a mainly doctrinal
perspective to others that explore the law from a more
philosophical perspective. Some essays concentrate on specific
defences, while others are concerned with the links between
defences, or with how defences relate to the structure of the law
of equity generally. One aim of the book is to shed light on
equitable doctrines by analysing them through the lens of defences.
The essays offer original contributions to this complex, important
but neglected field of scholarly investigation. The contributors -
judges, practitioners and academics - are all distinguished
jurists. The essays are addressed to all of the major common law
jurisdictions.
The current banking crisis has tested every dimension of banking
and created maximum uncertainty for its future - yet banks must
plan for this future. Author of a number of books on best practice
in bank management, Steven Davis has interviewed 25 senior bank
executives, management consultants, regulators, rating agencies and
analysts to understand how the strategies of the leading banks
might evolve in the future. Its unique research, case studies of
success, and conclusions for the future should be of interest to
senior bank management as well as their advisors, regulators and
analysts.
This book is the second in a series based on Jesus' teaching in the
Parable of the Sower. Volume I introduces the teaching's principles
and reviews the Gospel account of Jesus applying them in His role
as the "Wonderful Counselor." Volume II is a review of Biblical
treatment protocols for each of the three damaged soils/souls, and
Biblical resiliency is examined and related to "good soil." In this
fallen world, we encounter a constant barrage of afflictions and
problems, and our main challenge is not the problems but our
damaged capacity to deal with them. Harry refers to his personal
restoration projects with the hope that the reader will identify
their own restoration experiences. His goal is that the reader will
be able to see themselves and others from God's viewpoint as the
"Master Restorer." David recorded this level of insight in Psalm
23:3. "He restores my soul." Chapter four has been chosen as a
Poster Presentation at the American Association of Christian
Counselor's 2013 World Conference. Harry has been in the counseling
field for over thirty-five years, with thirty as a Director/Manager
of Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment programs. In addition he
has studied the entire Bible. From his combined training,
experience and Biblical understanding, he presents his
understanding of God's recovery program for us all. He earned his
B.A. degree in Psychology from Millersville University and his M.
A. degree in Counseling from Liberty University. He has been a
Certified Addictions Counselor since 1979, Certified Clinical
Supervisor since 1995 and a Licensed Professional Counselor since
2002. He has served as a Deacon, Elder, Bible Study and Sunday
School teacher and currently serves as a Ministry Leader of
Celebrate Recovery. Harry has been married to Carla for over
thirty-nine years, and they reside in Milton, Pa. "In God We
Trust." For more information, visit counselingtofaith.com. He can

This book provides a comprehensive summary of a wide variety of statistical methods for the analysis of repeated measurements. It is designed to be both a useful reference for practitioners and a textbook for a graduate-level course focused on methods for the analysis of repeated measurements. This book will be of interest to * Statisticians in academics, industry, and research organizations * Scientists who design and analyze studies in which repeated measurements are obtained from each experimental unit * Graduate students in statistics and biostatistics. The prerequisites are knowledge of mathematical statistics at the level of Hogg and Craig (1995) and a course in linear regression and ANOVA at the level of Neter et. al. (1985). The important features of this book include a comprehensive coverage of classical and recent methods for continuous and categorical outcome variables; numerous homework problems at the end of each chapter; and the extensive use of real data sets in examples and homework problems. The 80 data sets used in the examples and homework problems can be downloaded from www.springer-ny.com at the list of author websites. Since many of the data sets can be used to demonstrate multiple methods of analysis, instructors can easily develop additional homework problems and exam questions based on the data sets provided. In addition, overhead transparencies produced using TeX and solutions to homework problems are available to course instructors. The overheads also include programming statements and computer output for the examples, prepared primarily using the SAS System. Charles S. Davis is Senior Director of Biostatistics at Elan Pharmaceuticals, San Diego, California. He previously was professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Iowa. He is author or co-author of more than 75 peer-reviewed papers in statistical and medical journals and one book (Categorical Data Analysis using the SAS System with Maura Stokes and Gary Koch). His research and teaching interests include categorical data analysis, methods for the analysis of repeated measurements, and clinical trials. Dr. Davis has consulted with numerous companies and has taught short courses on categorical data analysis, methods for the analysis of repeated measurements, and clinical trials methodology for industrial, government, and academic organizations. He received an "Excellence in Continuing Education" award from the American Statistical Association in 2001 and has served as associate editor of the journals Controlled Clinical Trials and The American Statistician and as chair of the Biometrics Section of the ASA.
As the Soviet Union collapsed, many scholars and policymakers predicted that the pillars of Communism would collapse along with the state. Yet, the official trade unions not only continued to exist yet gained power in the late Soviet and post-Soviet period. Sue Davis explains the reasons why the official trade unions survive and thrive and why new, independent unions remain weak despite massive Western assistance. She examines many factors ranging from state policy to labor power in the late Soviet period as well as the first five years of the post-Soviet era in Russia and Ukraine.
International business is synonymous with big challenges. Cultural
and institutional complexities remain ever potent, so are newer
concerns like climate change and international terrorism. This
timely book examines these challenges from the perspectives of
different international business actors.
Computer systems that analyze images are critical to a wide variety
of applications such as visual inspections systems for various
manufacturing processes, remote sensing of the environment from
space-borne imaging platforms, and automatic diagnosis from X-rays
and other medical imaging sources. Professor Azriel Rosenfeld, the
founder of the field of digital image analysis, made fundamental
contributions to a wide variety of problems in image processing,
pattern recognition and computer vision. Professor Rosenfeld's
previous students, postdoctoral scientists, and colleagues
illustrate in Foundations of Image Understanding how current
research has been influenced by his work as the leading researcher
in the area of image analysis for over two decades. Each chapter of
Foundations of Image Understanding is written by one of the world's
leading experts in his area of specialization, examining digital
geometry and topology (early research which laid the foundations
for many industrial machine vision systems), edge detection and
segmentation (fundamental to systems that analyze complex images of
our three-dimensional world), multi-resolution and variable
resolution representations for images and maps, parallel algorithms
and systems for image analysis, and the importance of human
psychophysical studies of vision to the design of computer vision
systems. Professor Rosenfeld's chapter briefly discusses topics not
covered in the contributed chapters, providing a personal,
historical perspective on the development of the field of image
understanding. Foundations of Image Understanding is an excellent
source of basic material for both graduate students entering the
field and established researchers who require a compact source for
many of the foundational topics in image analysis.
Having recently relocated from Chicago to Los Angeles with a new
husband and her first love's daughter, Susan is thousands of miles
away from home.
Suddenly distraught over the death of her first love, Susan
can't get Rick out of her thoughts. It doesn't help that his
presence is felt strongly by both she and her new husband.
In an intensely personal coming of age exploration, Susan
discovers and relives, through flashbacks, her tormented
relationship with Rick from beginning to end.
Upon investigating his murder, Susan learns more about herself
than she'd realized possible, and thus is finally able to let go of
some of the pain that has haunted her for over twenty years.
Through this confrontation, the past ceases to be a
ball-and-chain; the future--still full of uncertainty--is no longer
to be feared.
As the global investment banking business enters its third year of lower revenues following the peak year of 2000, bank management must address a host of issues: business mix, Cost Management Risk, aligning interests of professionals with stockholders, and attracting and leading a unique team of professionals. Based on an extensive interview series with over 50 banking professionals and independent experts, this book defines best practice in addressing each issue. It concludes with the outlook for the medium term expressed by interviewees as well as by the author's own views.
