Romanticism, Hellenism, and the Philosophy of Nature (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): William S. Davis Romanticism, Hellenism, and the Philosophy of Nature (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
William S. Davis
R2,200 Discovery Miles 22 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book investigates intersections between the philosophy of nature and Hellenism in British and German Romanticism, focusing primarily on five central literary/philosophical figures: Friedrich Schelling, Friedrich Hoelderlin, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Percy Shelley, and Lord Byron. Near the end of the eighteenth century, poets and thinkers reinvented Greece as a site of aesthetic and ontological wholeness, a move that corresponded with a refiguring of nature as a dynamically interconnected web in which each part is linked to the living whole. This vision of a vibrant materiality that allows us to become "one with all that lives," along with a Romantic version of Hellenism that wished to reassemble the broken fragments of an imaginary Greece as both site and symbol of this all-unity, functioned as a two-pronged response to subjective anxiety that arose in the wake of Kant and Fichte. The result is a form of resistance to an idealism that appeared to leave little room for a world of beauty, love, and nature beyond the self.

Counseling to Faith Volume I (Hardcover): Harry S. Davis Counseling to Faith Volume I (Hardcover)
Harry S. Davis
R589 Discovery Miles 5 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Harry has been running Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment programs for over thirty years. It is from this professional mindset that he shares his insights from the Bible. First he walks the reader through the scriptures on how we are made in the image of God but are fallen. Then he integrates our design and sin nature with Jesus' teaching in the Parable of the Sower, where Jesus identifies four different spiritual conditions. Lastly, he takes the reader through a clinical observation of reviewing Jesus' work with each of the four types of spiritual conditions. This book is not about drugs. It is about how we are all damaged and in need of a recovery program. He shows how Jesus as the "Wonderful Counselor" models the delivery of this recovery program. He was Director of Counseling at White Deer Run (Allenwood, Pa.) for ten years. For over twenty years he has been the Drug and Alcohol Treatment Manager at the State Correctional Institution at Muncy, which is a women's prison. He has earned his B.A. degree in Psychology from Millersville University and his M.A. Degree in Counseling from Liberty University. His Masters Degree was from a Christian perspective and his studies included two Masters level theology courses. From 9/94 through 5/03 he taught two Drug & Alcohol courses at Lycoming College. He has been a Certified Addictions Counselor since 1979, a Certified Clinical Supervisor since 1995 and a Licensed Professional Counselor since 2002. He has studied the entire Bible from 1982 to 1985 and has served as a Deacon, Elder and Bible Study and Sunday School teacher. Harry has been married to Carla for over thirty-seven years and they have two children and two grandchildren. They reside in Milton, Pa. "In God We Trust." He can be contacted at [email protected].

Bank Mergers - Lessons for the Future (Hardcover): S. Davis Bank Mergers - Lessons for the Future (Hardcover)
S. Davis
R2,780 Discovery Miles 27 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Despite the wall of evidence that bank mergers add little or no value, yet investors and management continue to fuel the consolidation wave. This book draws on the actual experience of senior executives in over 30 banks with extensive merger experience to demonstrate how most mergers do in fact fail to meet objectives. It explores in detail the issues of strategic positioning, cost and revenue synergies, due diligence, IT selection and conversion, people selection, cultural conflict, leadership, and the decision making time frame. The book concludes that experienced and determined leadership, significant net cost savings, swift decision making and the cost of IT integration are key variables for success. It also suggests that the prospect of more cross border mergers and modest short term cost savings argues for a new pact between investors and bank management.

Counseling to Faith Volume II (Hardcover): Harry S. Davis Counseling to Faith Volume II (Hardcover)
Harry S. Davis
R752 Discovery Miles 7 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is the second in a series based on Jesus' teaching in the Parable of the Sower. Volume I introduces the teaching's principles and reviews the Gospel account of Jesus applying them in His role as the "Wonderful Counselor." Volume II is a review of Biblical treatment protocols for each of the three damaged soils/souls, and Biblical resiliency is examined and related to "good soil." In this fallen world, we encounter a constant barrage of afflictions and problems, and our main challenge is not the problems but our damaged capacity to deal with them. Harry refers to his personal restoration projects with the hope that the reader will identify their own restoration experiences. His goal is that the reader will be able to see themselves and others from God's viewpoint as the "Master Restorer." David recorded this level of insight in Psalm 23:3. "He restores my soul." Chapter four has been chosen as a Poster Presentation at the American Association of Christian Counselor's 2013 World Conference. Harry has been in the counseling field for over thirty-five years, with thirty as a Director/Manager of Inpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment programs. In addition he has studied the entire Bible. From his combined training, experience and Biblical understanding, he presents his understanding of God's recovery program for us all. He earned his B.A. degree in Psychology from Millersville University and his M. A. degree in Counseling from Liberty University. He has been a Certified Addictions Counselor since 1979, Certified Clinical Supervisor since 1995 and a Licensed Professional Counselor since 2002. He has served as a Deacon, Elder, Bible Study and Sunday School teacher and currently serves as a Ministry Leader of Celebrate Recovery. Harry has been married to Carla for over thirty-nine years, and they reside in Milton, Pa. "In God We Trust." For more information, visit counselingtofaith.com. This book provides a comprehensive summary of a wide variety of statistical methods for the analysis of repeated measurements. It is designed to be both a useful reference for practitioners and a textbook for a graduate-level course focused on methods for the analysis of repeated measurements. This book will be of interest to * Statisticians in academics, industry, and research organizations * Scientists who design and analyze studies in which repeated measurements are obtained from each experimental unit * Graduate students in statistics and biostatistics. The prerequisites are knowledge of mathematical statistics at the level of Hogg and Craig (1995) and a course in linear regression and ANOVA at the level of Neter et. al. (1985). The important features of this book include a comprehensive coverage of classical and recent methods for continuous and categorical outcome variables; numerous homework problems at the end of each chapter; and the extensive use of real data sets in examples and homework problems. The 80 data sets used in the examples and homework problems can be downloaded from www.springer-ny.com at the list of author websites. Since many of the data sets can be used to demonstrate multiple methods of analysis, instructors can easily develop additional homework problems and exam questions based on the data sets provided. In addition, overhead transparencies produced using TeX and solutions to homework problems are available to course instructors. The overheads also include programming statements and computer output for the examples, prepared primarily using the SAS System. Charles S. Davis is Senior Director of Biostatistics at Elan Pharmaceuticals, San Diego, California. He previously was professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Iowa. He is author or co-author of more than 75 peer-reviewed papers in statistical and medical journals and one book (Categorical Data Analysis using the SAS System with Maura Stokes and Gary Koch). His research and teaching interests include categorical data analysis, methods for the analysis of repeated measurements, and clinical trials. Dr. Davis has consulted with numerous companies and has taught short courses on categorical data analysis, methods for the analysis of repeated measurements, and clinical trials methodology for industrial, government, and academic organizations. He received an "Excellence in Continuing Education" award from the American Statistical Association in 2001 and has served as associate editor of the journals Controlled Clinical Trials and The American Statistician and as chair of the Biometrics Section of the ASA.

Trade Unions in Russia and Ukraine (Hardcover): S. Davis Trade Unions in Russia and Ukraine (Hardcover)
S. Davis
R2,778 Discovery Miles 27 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As the Soviet Union collapsed, many scholars and policymakers predicted that the pillars of Communism would collapse along with the state. Yet, the official trade unions not only continued to exist yet gained power in the late Soviet and post-Soviet period. Sue Davis explains the reasons why the official trade unions survive and thrive and why new, independent unions remain weak despite massive Western assistance. She examines many factors ranging from state policy to labor power in the late Soviet period as well as the first five years of the post-Soviet era in Russia and Ukraine.

Foundations of Image Understanding (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Larry S. Davis Foundations of Image Understanding (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Larry S. Davis
R4,479 Discovery Miles 44 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Computer systems that analyze images are critical to a wide variety of applications such as visual inspections systems for various manufacturing processes, remote sensing of the environment from space-borne imaging platforms, and automatic diagnosis from X-rays and other medical imaging sources. Professor Azriel Rosenfeld, the founder of the field of digital image analysis, made fundamental contributions to a wide variety of problems in image processing, pattern recognition and computer vision. Professor Rosenfeld's previous students, postdoctoral scientists, and colleagues illustrate in Foundations of Image Understanding how current research has been influenced by his work as the leading researcher in the area of image analysis for over two decades. Each chapter of Foundations of Image Understanding is written by one of the world's leading experts in his area of specialization, examining digital geometry and topology (early research which laid the foundations for many industrial machine vision systems), edge detection and segmentation (fundamental to systems that analyze complex images of our three-dimensional world), multi-resolution and variable resolution representations for images and maps, parallel algorithms and systems for image analysis, and the importance of human psychophysical studies of vision to the design of computer vision systems. Professor Rosenfeld's chapter briefly discusses topics not covered in the contributed chapters, providing a personal, historical perspective on the development of the field of image understanding. Foundations of Image Understanding is an excellent source of basic material for both graduate students entering the field and established researchers who require a compact source for many of the foundational topics in image analysis.

In an intensely personal coming of age exploration, Susan discovers and relives, through flashbacks, her tormented relationship with Rick from beginning to end.

Upon investigating his murder, Susan learns more about herself than she'd realized possible, and thus is finally able to let go of some of the pain that has haunted her for over twenty years.

Through this confrontation, the past ceases to be a ball-and-chain; the future--still full of uncertainty--is no longer to be feared.
