Lloyd Alexander - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition): James S. Jacobs, Michael O Tunnell Lloyd Alexander - A Bio-Bibliography (Hardcover, Annotated edition)
James S. Jacobs, Michael O Tunnell
R1,261 Discovery Miles 12 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Lloyd Alexander--A Bio-Bibliography" profiles both the professional career and private life of this prolific author, winner of both the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award. Although best known and loved for his children's books, Lloyd Alexander also has been a regular contributor to magazines, anthologies, textbooks, and professional journals, all of which are documented in this comprehensive volume.

A biographical glimpse into Alexander's early life reveals a youngster impassioned by books and touches upon the influences that shaped his sensibilities and encouraged his creativity to flourish. A list of writings by Alexander for both young and adult audiences as well as writings and audiovisual media about him comprise the annotated bibliography that follows. Illustrations, unpublished speeches, translations by Alexander, dissertations, book reviews, and monographs describing his work are just some of the works cited. In order to provide as thorough a recording of primary and secondary source materials as possible, most citations contain full bibliographical information; however, rather than omit an entry for lack of complete documentation, a small number of references are only partially covered. Dates of awards conferred and a Lloyd Alexander chronology appear in the appendixes, and a full index concludes the work.

American Psychology in the Quest for Nuclear Peace (Hardcover): Marilyn S. Jacobs American Psychology in the Quest for Nuclear Peace (Hardcover)
Marilyn S. Jacobs
R2,555 Discovery Miles 25 550 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is a treatise on the history of American psychology's role in nuclear war prevention. So writes Marilyn S. Jacobs in the preface to "American Psychology in the Quest for Nuclear Peace." This timely and important study will facilitate the work of those psychologists who wish to use their knowledge and expertise in the cause of nuclear war prevention. Jacobs places the psychologist's struggle for nuclear peace in historical perspective and examines the complicated context in which the threat of nuclear war is embedded; one which is influenced by international relations, economic and political systems and weapons technology. Student and professional psychologists, political scientists, as well as the general reader concerned with the threat of nuclear war will find this book imperative reading.

The study begins by examining the psychologist's role of social responsibility in the nuclear dilemma. Why is psychology involved? How did it become involved? What is the nature of the involvement? Is it appropriate that psychology be involved? The book is directed toward these questions. Jacobs interviews prominent individuals in the peace movement, most notably, Herbert Kelman, Irving Janis, Ralph White, and Thomas Milburn. Other chapters explore the psychologist's role as scientist, government consultant, and social activist.

R4,290 Discovery Miles 42 900 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Business modelling is a vast arena of research and practice, which is gaining increasing important in the rapid development of e-commerce, globalization, and in particular, the movement toward global e-business. The ability to utilize advanced computing technology to model, analyse and simulate various aspects of ever-changing businesses has made a significant impact on the way businesses are designed and run these days. With the current global e-business and e-commerce initiatives, it has become important that all businesses carefully validate their business objectives, requirements, and strategies through a careful process of formal business modelling. It is important for effective enterprise decision making to have clear, concise business models that allow the extraction of critical value from business processes and specify the rules to be globally enforced. Particularly in e-business specifications, the need to be unambiguous, accurate, and complete becomes even greater, because there may be no human mediator or agent to rely on in complex or unforeseen situations. Business Modelling: Multidisciplinary Approaches - Economics, Operational, and Information Systems Perspectives, arranged in three parts, brings scholarly perspectives from various disciplines to bear on some of the critical aspects of business modeling. The first part (chapters 1-8) focuses on business modelling fundamentals and starts with a series of economics and operations research perspectives. The second part (chapters 9-19) concentrates on modelling in electronic businesses and focuses on Management Information Systems and Decision Support Systems. The third part (chapters 20-22) centers on multidisciplinary business modelling progress, in particular on the seminal work of Professor Andrew B. Whinston.

The symposium on which this volume was based brought together approximately fifty scientists from a variety of backgrounds to discuss the rapidly-emerging set of competing technologies for exploiting a massive quantity of textual information. This group was challenged to explore new ways to take advantage of the power of on-line text. A billion words of text can be more generally useful than a few hundred logical rules, if advanced computation can extract useful information from streams of text and help find what is needed in the sea of available material. While the extraction task is a hot topic for the field of natural language processing and the retrieval task is a solid aspect in the field of information retrieval, these two disciplines came together at the symposium and have been cross-breeding more than ever. The book is organized in three parts. The first group of papers describes the current set of natural language processing techniques used for interpreting and extracting information from quantities of text. The second group gives some of the historical perspective, methodology, and current practice of information retrieval work; the third covers both current and emerging applications of these techniques. This collection of readings should give students and scientists alike a good idea of the current techniques as well as a general concept of how to go about developing and testing systems to handle volumes of text.

R2,485 Discovery Miles 24 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The year 2006 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sigmund Freud, the father of psychoanalysis. To commemorate this event, the Austrian government sponsored a number of academic and cultural events. Among these was a historic gathering of representatives of the four major United States psychoanalytic organizations: the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry, the American Psychoanalytic Asociation, Division 39 of the American Psychological Association, and the American Association for Psychoanalysis on Clinical LSocial Work/NMCOP. The essays presented by speakers from these organizations at the Embassy of Austria in Washington, D.C., survey the tremendous and wide-ranging influence that Freud had on history, contemporary society, culture and the arts. The essays form the centerpiece of this book. Complementing these wide-ranging essays are literary works and remarkable photographs of Freud, his family, colleagues and patients which were also presented during the commemorative celebrations of Freud in the United States and Austria.

Ronald J. Tallarida, Leonard S. Jacob
R1,389 Discovery Miles 13 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is designed to meet the modern need for a better understanding of drug-receptor interaction as applied to the gathering and interpretation of dose-response data. It is an introduction suitable for any student who has had a first course in pharmacology. This book is an extension of the pharmacology course into one area of what is now known as molecular pharmacology. The material included is an outgrowth of courses that we have given in recent years to health-science students in several professional schools and universities. The area of drug-receptor theory, although just a part of molecular phar macology, is already very broad. One major line of investigation is concerned with the chemical and structural nature of specific receptors and with efforts to isolate specific receptors. Another line of investigation is concerned with the kinetic theories of drug-receptor interaction, the effort there being to provide a general theory that is applicable to wide classes of drugs. We have chosen to deal with the latter. There are several reasons for our choice of topics. First, the information is very practical; that is, it permits one to use properly and consistently terms such as "efficacy," "partial agonist," "pure antagonist," "potency," "pA2'" etc., when describing drug action. Second, many students fail to appreciate the differences in and the limitations of the various theories, beginning with the classical theory of A. J. Clark, on up to the very recent allosteric theories."

Christ Circumcised - A Study in Early Christian History and Difference (Hardcover): Andrew S. Jacobs Christ Circumcised - A Study in Early Christian History and Difference (Hardcover)
Andrew S. Jacobs
R2,221 Discovery Miles 22 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In the first full-length study of the circumcision of Jesus, Andrew S. Jacobs turns to an unexpected symbol--the stereotypical mark of the Jewish covenant on the body of the Christian savior--to explore how and why we think about difference and identity in early Christianity.Jacobs explores the subject of Christ's circumcision in texts dating from the first through seventh centuries of the Common Era. Using a diverse toolkit of approaches, including the psychoanalytic, postcolonial, and poststructuralist, he posits that while seeming to desire fixed borders and a clear distinction between self (Christian) and other (Jew, pagan, and heretic), early Christians consistently blurred and destabilized their own religious boundaries. He further argues that in this doubled approach to others, Christians mimicked the imperial discourse of the Roman Empire, which exerted its power through the management, not the erasure, of difference. For Jacobs, the circumcision of Christ vividly illustrates a deep-seated Christian duality: the fear of and longing for an other, at once reviled and internalized. From his earliest appearance in the Gospel of Luke to the full-blown Feast of the Divine Circumcision in the medieval period, Christ circumcised represents a new way of imagining Christians and their creation of a new religious culture.

Remains of the Jews - The Holy Land and Christian Empire in Late Antiquity (Hardcover): Andrew S. Jacobs Remains of the Jews - The Holy Land and Christian Empire in Late Antiquity (Hardcover)
Andrew S. Jacobs
R1,964 Discovery Miles 19 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Remains of the Jews" studies the rise of Christian Empire in late antiquity (300-550 C.E.) through the dense and complex manner in which Christian authors wrote about Jews in the charged space of the "holy land." The book employs contemporary cultural studies, particularly postcolonial criticism, to read Christian writings about holy land Jews as colonial writings. These writings created a cultural context in which Christians viewed themselves as powerful--and in which, perhaps, Jews were able to construct a posture of resistance to this new Christian Empire. "Remains of the Jews" reexamines familiar types of literature--biblical interpretation, histories, sermons, letters--from a new perspective in order to understand how power and resistance shaped religious identities in the later Roman Empire.

Bart D. Ehrman, Andrew S. Jacobs
R2,960 Discovery Miles 29 600 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Christianity in Late Antiquity, 300-450 C.E.: A Reader collects primary sources of the early Christian world, from the last "Great Persecution" under the Emperor Diocletian to the Council of Chalcedon in the mid-fifth century. During this period Christianity rose to prominence in the Roman Empire, developed new notions of sanctity and heresy, and spread beyond the Mediterranean world. This reader incorporates standard texts--from authors such as Athanasius, Augustine, and Eusebius--in the most recent translations and also includes less familiar texts, some of which appear in English translation for the first time. Presented in their entirety or in long excerpts, the texts are arranged thematically and cover such topics as orthodoxy, conversion, asceticism, and art and architecture. The editors provide introductions for each chapter, text, and image, situating the selections historically, geographically, and intellectually. Christianity in Late Antiquity, 300-450 C.E.: A Reader highlights the ways in which religion and culture were mutually transformed during this crucial historical period. Ideal for courses in Early Christianity, Christianity in Late Antiquity, and History of Christianity, this reader is an excellent companion to Bart D. Ehrman's After the New Testament (OUP, 1998) and an exceptional resource for scholars.

Andrew S. Jacobs
R822 Discovery Miles 8 220 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Epiphanius, Bishop of Constantia on Cyprus from 367 to 403 CE, was incredibly influential in the last decades of the fourth century. Whereas his major surviving text-the Panarion, an encyclopedia of heresies-is studied for lost sources, Epiphanius himself is often dismissed as an anti-intellectual eccentric, a marginal figure of late antiquity. In this book, Andrew S. Jacobs moves Epiphanius from the margin back toward the center and proposes we view major cultural themes of late antiquity in a new light altogether. Through an examination of the key cultural concepts of celebrity, conversion, discipline, scripture, and salvation, Jacobs shifts our understanding of late antiquity from a transformational period open to new ideas and peoples toward a Christian Empire that posited a troubling, but ever-present, otherness at the center of its cultural production.
