Scott, Byron and the Poetics of Cultural Encounter is an innovative
study of Scott's and Byron's poetical engagement with borders
(actual and metaphorical) and the people living on and around them.
The author discusses Scott's edited collection of Border Ballads,
Minstrelsy of the Scottish Border and his narrative poetry, and
Byron's Childe Harold's Pilgrimage , cantos 1 and 2, his Eastern
Tales, and his late, utopian South-Sea poem The Island. This
fascinating study provides a detailed exegesis of the importance of
borders to these leading poets and the public, during the early
years of the Nineteenth-Century, with an emphasis on reciprocal
literary influences, and on attitudes towards cultural instability.
This book is a guide to the use of inverse theory for estimation
and conditional simulation of flow and transport parameters in
porous media. It describes the theory and practice of estimating
properties of underground petroleum reservoirs from measurements of
flow in wells, and it explains how to characterize the uncertainty
in such estimates. Early chapters present the reader with the
necessary background in inverse theory, probability and spatial
statistics. The book demonstrates how to calculate sensitivity
coefficients and the linearized relationship between models and
production data. It also shows how to develop iterative methods for
generating estimates and conditional realizations. The text is
written for researchers and graduates in petroleum engineering and
groundwater hydrology and can be used as a textbook for advanced
courses on inverse theory in petroleum engineering. It includes
many worked examples to demonstrate the methodologies and a
selection of exercises.

Integral, or structural, foams are one of the most remarkable
materials that have been developed over the last fifteen years. As
with all rapidly growing fields, the terminology seems to have
grown even faster. Thus there are two names for the material
structure itself. In the United States and in Japan the term for
these plastics is Structural Foams, whereas in Europe and the USSR
the term used is usually Integral Foams. We have adhered to the
European term in the text and hope our colleagues will bear with
us. Integral foams have a specific structure: a cellular core that
gradually turns into a solid skin. The skin gives the part its form
and stiffness, while the cellular core contributes to the very high
strength-to-weight values of the material. These are higher than
those of some unfoamed plastics and metals. The sandwich-like
structure with its unique mechanical properties was prompted by
nature. Wood and bone are strong and light-weight natural materials
having a cellular structure. Since the sandwich-like structure of
the integral foams resembles that of natural wood, the foams are
often referred to as artifical wood or plastic wood, thereby
emphasizing not only the formal structural similarity of these
materials, but also one of the main functional applications of
integral foams - replacement of wooden articles in various fields
of engineering and construction.
Forensic toxicology has progressed rapidly and diversified greatly
in recent years. The members of the International Association of
Forensic Toxicologists provide a valuable service through the
association's bulletin. In its pages members hear of new poisons as
they are encountered and the analytical techniques used to deal
with them. There is a wealth of information in the form of case
reports which is used to assist with the interpretation of the
results. Each year the members have the opportunity of meeting in
Europe. In 1979 the chosen venue was the University of Glasgow and
the meeting was hosted by the Department of Forensic Medicine and
Science. The department was established by Royal Charter in 1839
within a few years of the beginning of the modern approach to
toxicology. In those early years the function of the department was
to teach forensic medicine and toxicology. Today the department has
become a recognised centre for the teaching of forensic medicine.
The toxicology section has expanded greatly to provide the best
forensic and environmental toxicology in Scotland. Inorganic
analytical facilities are available for the investigation of
metallic poisons by atomic absorption spectrometry, neutron
activation analysis, X-ray fluorescence and anodic stripping
voltametry. Organic analytical toxicology is pursued using gas
chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography,
immunoassays, and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Apart from
the normal research and routine investigations of a toxicological
laboratory the department specialises in the investigation of fire
related deaths, solvent abuse (glue sniffing) and trace element
studies in human subjects.
During the oil embargo, in the winter 1973174, parts of Western
Europe present ed an almost war-like aspect on Saturdays and
Sundays: no traffic on the high ways, no crowds at ski resorts and
other weekend entertainment places, no gaso line at the pumps.
Living and teaching then in that part of the world, and discussing
the situa tion with our students, we came to the conclusion that it
would be timely to col lect the fine chemistry already known at the
time in the field of conversion of coal to gasoline and other
chemicals, and by this way help to draw the attention to this
important alternative to crude oil. The idea of this book was born.
The energy shock of the early seventies has been healthy and of
great conse quences in chemistry. Large amounts of research money
have been put to work since, and our knowledge of the possibilities
and limitations of coal-based chemistry has increased enormously.
During several years it appeared inap propriate to write a
monograph about a topic which was in the midst of such an impetuous
development. Nevertheless, we collected, and critically selected,
the upcoming work as it appeared in the literature, and also tried
to provide some modest input ourselves. Now, ten years later, the
situation seems to be settled to a certain degree."

Paleoecological data from the Quaternary Period (2.6 million years
ago to present) provides an opportunity for educational outreach
for the earth and biological sciences. Paleoecology data
repositories serve as technical hubs and focal points within their
disciplinary communities and so are uniquely situated to help
produce teaching modules and engagement resources. The Neotoma
Paleoecology Database provides support to educators from primary
schools to graduate students. In collaboration with pedagogical
experts, the Neotoma Paleoecology Database team has developed
teaching modules and model workflows. Early education is centered
on discovery; higher-level educational tools focus on illustrating
best practices for technical tasks. Collaborations among pedagogic
experts, technical experts and data stewards, centered around data
resources such as Neotoma, provide an important role within
research communities, and an important service to society,
supporting best practices, translating current research advances to
interested audiences, and communicating the importance of
individual research disciplines.
This issue will address health care issues and clinical
implications of rural and other medically underserved priority
populations. The Agency for Health Care Research and Quality
identified priority populations to include rural residents, racial
and ethnic minorities, low income groups, women, children, older
adults, and other individuals who may require chronic care. The
editors identified a need for articles focusing on priority
populations to help further understand health implications of
health disparities among specific populations. A main focus is on
identifying useful clinically focused strategies to address racial,
ethnic, and socioeconomic differences that are relevant and
influence overall healthcare, access, and quality of life. The
articles will provide clinicians and other consumers of Nursing
Clinics of North America with a diverse and unique perspective on
an array of clinically relevant and population focused topics. Some
example topics included are: Tailoring interactive multimedia to
improve diabetes self- management; Addressing mental and physical
health among older adults; Using mobile devices to access evidence-
based information in a rural setting; Identifying family history
and development of risk factors for diabetes among underserved
preschool children; Addressing smoking cessation, Cancer screening
issues, Cardiovascular health, and Obesity.
Chronic disease management is a key component of all nursing care
whether directly working within a' chronic disease speciality' or
providing emergency or acute care. This book is practical,
clinically orientated and provides a step-wise approach to
developing a service based upon the needs of the patient. It uses
the example of rheumatology to highlight common clinical issues for
nurses who wish to develop a chronic disease nursing service. The
first chapter of the book provides a brief overview of how nursing
has developed, the changing workforce and how government bodies and
policies should be considered when planning the development of a
service. The second section provides a framework for the
development of extended roles within nursing and guides the nurse
through the process of preparing a business proposal, setting up a
telephone helpline service, nurse led clinics and how to select
appropriate assessment tools. The final section discusses more
advanced and innovative developments for nurses.
These include the role of leadership and clinical governance in
service provision and team working, nurse led joint injection
clinics, the value of blood monitoring clinics, the nurses' role in
understanding immunology in relation to chronic disease and the use
of new cytokine therapies.

Elvis the Saint, Elvis the Sinner. For countless followers, Elvis
means more than a rhinestone-studded jumpsuit and a pair of
swinging hips. Elvis transcends, for whatever reason, this mortal
coil. His influence on worldwide pop culture is stunning,
ubiquitous, deeply profound. That so many find redemption in their
own lives as well as spiritual value in a poor boy from Tupelo
speaks volumes about our collective spirituality, as well as our
conceptions of religion, commodity, and meaning. This book only
scratches the surface of the rhinestone, examining the historical,
spiritual, and cultural conditions that turned a poor southern boy
into one of the most iconic images of the century.
