What is my book about?

My book is about my radio stories, experiences and discoveries I've made in this fickle industry over the years. It's a book about advice, suggestions and my opinions to those who are in the industry, want to get into the industry, or who was always been fascinated by our industry. It's perfect for the novices or newbie entering the broadcasting or media and can be used as a guideline to radio folk looking at improving their trade. It's written in its simplest form so that non-radio people who love the medium can also understand how it all works. Hopefully, the stories and advice can become a shortcut if you will, to those in the industry. It would be a beneficial source of information for any student who can reference the book easily. I use the book as the basis for my lectures or speeches at universities or other tertiary institutions. Parts of the book is designed as a syllabus to be used to do better presenting, producing or management of a radio station. It had rave reviews from people who are in radio broadcasting, as well as those who are not, as it's written in the form to keep you glued most of the way. To my knowledge there are not many, if any, books in South Africa that has been written this way about the radio industry and media as a whole.

Who is Baydu Adams?

Baydu has been involved in the broadcasting industry for over 27 years and also dabbles in other things including running his streetwear label called Cape Flats Native Online Clothing Store, owns an events company, an award-winning blogging website (baydu.co.za) with a second website (radiogurus.co.za), he guest lectures around all things radio at tertiary institutions and high schools. Baydu is also a speaker invited to present at radio stations, has alter egos who make an appearance on Kyknet's KLOP! on DSTV 147, and is an MC, he ran a speaker series with a partner for Grade 11's from the Cape Flats and townships, called thirTEENhours. Mr Adams also presented and produced an online tv show called BTV that showcased his 4 alter egos born during the lockdown and ran a weekly Facebook Live interview slot. Comedian Wayne Mckay ad Baydu launched The Wayne Mckay and Baydu Adams Vodcast Show, our video podcast offering. He's in the process of finishing off a stage production and consults with a partner, to community radio stations.

Having worked at Cape Town's two top commercial radio stations, KFM 94.5 and Heart 104.9 FM, he's also garnered experience having worked at community, theme park and internet radio stations. His last radio stint was up until September last year when he was the Programming Manager at Algoa FM in Gqeberha, the biggest commercial station in the region. Algoa FM picked up the Station of the Year award in Sandton while Baydu was PM.

A must-read on the radio indus

Thu, 30 Jan 2025 | Review by: phr0ggi

Part informative handbook, part autobiography, 'The Cruel & Beautiful World of Radio' is a rare look at a media form that pervades all our lives. Baydu Adams has packed the book with insights and stories that he has collected over his multi-year career in the South African radio industry, which allows the book to be both educational and entertaining. Of note are the infobites from interviews with radio stalwarts and stars that Adams has placed around the book. What really holds it together, is Adams' personal journey and his perspective on the objective realities of working in radio. At times funny and at others deeply poignant, Adams takes the reader to places where few of us as consumers of radio will ever go, pulling back the curtain to see an industry that is as much of its context as it influences it. So if you've ever wanted an unfiltered look behind the scenes at how the radio industry works, this is a must-read.
