In the treatment of infections caused by rapidly mutating viruses like human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), combination therapy with multiple drugs act ing by different mechanisms offers several advantages over monotherapy. It may provide: synergistic effect, possible reduction of dosages and side-effects, and reduction of the chance of drug resistance. In the past few years, hun dreds of HIV protease inhibitors have been synthesized and tested in order to overcome the limitations of reverse transcriptase inhibitors like zidovudine and others. In this review, emphasis is placed on the development of HIV pro tease inhibitors as antiviral agents against HIY, and structure-activity rela tionship analysis of saquinavir and related compounds. Limitations of some protease inhibitors and ways to overcome the shortcomings are presented. Among these many protease inhibitors five have been marketed during 1995-1999. They are saquinavir, ritonavir, indinavir, nelfinavir and ampre navir. Their different structural features, important physicochemical, phar macokinetic and clinical profiles are presented in a table form for easy com parison. It is hoped that in the future new drugs based on additional mech anisms can be developed for the treatment of AIDS. This book is about the Danish "Pastor-Poet" Kaj Munk, who in the 1930's was Scandinavia's most talked about playwright. It describes his early fascination with Europe's "Strong Men," and with German theater. The book contains an in-depth analysis of his early disillusionment with democracy, and then his growing awareness of the true nature of Nazism and Fascism. It was in particular the Nazi treatment of Europe's Jews that brought Kaj Munk to the front of Danish resistance. He denounced Hitler and the German occupiers from the pulpit and, despite numerous warnings, refused to keep quiet. He was assassinated by the Nazis on January 4, 1944. Kaj Munk was a beacon of light in Denmark's darkest hour, one of that nation's most noted and discussed men of letters, and he remains so to this day.

Im Zuge dieses Trends hat sich auch ein neues Instrument zur Losung von umweltpolitischen Herausforderungen zunehmend etabliert: Freiwillige Selbstverpflichtungserklarungen (FSVE). Zielsetzung dieser Arbeit ist die Definition des Begriffes FSVE und die Einordnung in das umweltpolitische Instrumentarium des Staates., Abstract: Umweltpolitische Themen, wie Klimaschutz oder Abfallentsorgung, haben seit den 70er Jahren in Deutschland an Bedeutung gewonnen. Im Zuge dieses Trends hat sich auch ein neues Instrument zur Losung von umweltpolitischen Herausforderungen zunehmend etabliert: Freiwillige Selbstverpflichtungserklarungen (FSVE). Allein zwischen 1980 und 1997 sind in Deutschland 93 FSVE ausgehandelt worden, in den Niederlanden sogar 107 und in der Europaischen Union (EU) 322. Im Vergleich zu Japan erscheinen diese Zahlen jedoch noch auf niedrigem Niveau zu liegen, dort werden jahrlich ca. 2.000 FSVE abgeschlossen. Wie ein Uberblick uber die wichtigsten Erklarungen im Anhang darstellt, werden FSVE in Deutschland fast ausschliesslich im Umweltschutz abgeschlossen. Es ist jedoch zu erwahnen, dass FSVE nicht nur in der Umweltpolitik eine Rolle spielen, sondern sich auch in anderen Politikbereichen erfolgreich etabliert haben. So gibt es im Bereich der Medien eine Werbedisziplin und eine Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle (FSK) der Filmwirtschaft. Auch im Bereich des Aussenhandels gibt haufig Selbstverpflichtungen in Form von freiwilligen Handelsbeschrankungen auf Exporte oder Importe.
