Concerned with contemporary notions of personhood and the relationship between persons and places, this book, presents a detailed insight into the Vanua Lavan's engagement with modernity, and examines how they relate to the past, make sense of the present and anticipate the future. Marilyn Strathern's claim that the Melanesian person is a dividual by and large holds for the Vanua Lavan person. But Vanua Lavans have also been exposed to, and creatively engaged with, what can be summarised under the term 'Western individualism'. The author draws together several themes, discourses and conversations which concern Vanuatu specifically, the Pacific as a wider geographic area but also theoretical fields in anthropology: the relevance and expressions of sociality through kinship, concepts of person, issues about land and cosmology, the kastom debate, and questions about continuity and change. In doing so she provides a snapshot of contemporary notions of personhood. Sabine Hess was awarded a Ph.D. from the Australian National University in Canberra and is currently teaching Anthropology at the Institute fur Ethnologie, University of Heidelberg. She is also working on an interdisciplinary project to document two endangered languages of Vanua Lava, Vanuatu, funded by the VW Foundation."

Flucht- und Aufnahmeprozesse sind durchzogen von geschlechtsspezifischen und intersektionalen Dynamiken. Die Autorinnen haben diese und das darin zu Tage tretende Geschlechterwissen im Verbundforschungsprojekt „Gender – Flucht – Aufnahmepolitiken“ für die Themen Unterbringung, Gewaltschutz, Erwerbstätigkeit, Medien, Familie, ‚Heimischwerden‘ und Solidarität analysiert. Die migrationsbezogene Infrastruktur hat sich in der deutschen Migrationsgesellschaft auf die Bedarfe von Geflüchteten eingestellt. Geflüchtete machen mit den Angeboten vielfältige Erfahrungen, die von hilfreicher und solidarischer Unterstützung über wenig angepasste Angebote bis zu Exklusion und Diskriminierung reichen. Die rahmende Medienanalyse zeigt, wie tief die öffentliche und mediale Rezeption der sogenannten „Flüchtlingskrise“ durch vergeschlechtlichte Narrative geprägt ist, und wie diese die kommunale und ehrenamtliche Arbeit mit Geflüchteten mitprägen. Der Band richtet sich an Interessierte aus Studium, Forschung und Praxis, die sich mit Flucht, Migration und/oder Geschlechterverhältnissen befassen. 

Wahrend Au-pair offiziell als Kulturaustausch betrachtet wird, zeigt die Forschung, dass sich Au-pair in den letzten Jahren stark verandert hat: vor allem junge Frauen aus Osteuropa nutzen es als legale Einreisemoeglichkeit; deutsche berufstatige Frauen, um die Versorgungsarbeiten an Dritte zu delegieren. Der Wandel von Au-pair wird dabei als paradigmatisch fur eine zunehmende Feminisierung von Arbeit und Verantwortung verstanden, ausgeloest durch eine Reihe von Transformationsprozessen der ost- und westeuropaischen Gesellschaften. Sabine Hess zeigt hierdurch nicht nur eine Reorganisation von Arbeits- und Privatsphare. Sie beobachtet auch die Entstehung feminisierter transnationaler Raume als kreative Reaktion auf die Lebensverhaltnisse in Osteuropa und die Einwanderungspolitiken Westeuropas.

This book investigates transnational migration and mobility of women from, and within, Central-Eastern European countries. It looks at women's practices and experiences mostly in the service sector where they are in demand as substitutes in stereotypically "women's work." The book combines different perspectives including sociological and anthropological studies, comparative policy analysis, and historical and statistical evidence. It provides new insights into current theoretical debates in migration and gender studies.
