When I first opened his De Incarnatione I soon discovered I was
reading a masterpiece ... for only a master mind could have written
so deeply on a subject with such classical simplicity. -- C.S.
Lewis, from the Introduction By any standard, this is a classic of
Christian theology. Composed by St. Athanasius in the fourth
century, it expounds with simplicity the theological vision
defended at the councils of Nicaea and Constantinople: that the Son
of God himself became "fully human, so that we might become god."
Its influence on all Christian theology thereafter, East and West,
ensures its place as one of the few "must read" books of Christian
theology for all time. We are pleased to offer this new translation
with a full introduction by C.S. Lewis. This book is also available
from SVS Press with the original Greek text presented on the facing
page. About the Author: The V. Rev. Dr John Behr was Dean and
Professor of Patristics at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological
Seminary. He is Editor of the Popular Patristics Series. Other SVS
Press books by Fr John are The Way to Nicaea, The Nicene Faith (2
vols.), and The Mystery of Christ.

This is a one-volume edition of the work published in 1907 in two
volumes under the title "The Paradise, or Garden of the Holy
Fathers...." The work comprises "The Life of St. Anthony"
attributed to Athanasius, "The Paradise" written by Palladius, "The
Rule of Pachomius" and "The History of the Monks" by Jerome. The
work has long been an important source for the knowledge of
Egyptian monasticism. It is a history of the anchorites, recluses,
monks, coenobites and ascetic fathers of the deserts of Egypt,
between A.D. 250 and A.D. 400.
As one of history's most passionate defenders of Christian
doctrine, Saint Athanasius is notable for his apologist essays and
their substantial contribution to early Orthodox theology. As a
bishop serving in fourth century Alexandria, Athanasius composed
this essay in his early life and devoted it to a number of issues
still debated by theologians today, including monotheism, spiritual
salvation, and the divine nature of Jesus Christ.
ATHANASIUS, Bishop of Alexandria and one of the most illustrious
defenders of the Christian faith, was born at Alexandria about the
year 297. Before the outbreak of the Arian controversy, which began
in 319, Athanasius had made himself known as the author of two
essays addressed to a convert from heathenism, one of them entitled
Against the Gentiles, and the other On the Incarnation of the Word.
Both are of the nature of apologetical treatises, arguing such
questions as monotheism, and the necessity of divine interposition
for the salvation of the world; and already in the second may be
traced that tone of thought respecting the essential divinity of
Christ as the "God-man" for which he afterwards became conspicuous.
