Advanced Computer Architectures (Hardcover): Sajjan G. Shiva Advanced Computer Architectures (Hardcover)
Sajjan G. Shiva
R4,162 Discovery Miles 41 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Despite the tremendous advances in performance enabled by modern architectures, there are always new applications and demands arising that require ever-increasing capabilities. Keeping up with these demands requires a deep-seated understanding of contemporary architectures in concert with a fundamental understanding of basic principles that allows one to anticipate what will be possible over the system's lifetime. Advanced Computer Architectures focuses on the design of high performance supercomputers with balanced coverage of the hardware, software structures, and application characteristics. This book is a timeless distillation of underlying principles punctuated by real-world implementations in popular current and past commercially available systems. It briefly reviews the basics of uniprocessor architecture before outlining the most popular processing paradigms, performance evaluation, and cost factor considerations. This builds to a discussion of pipeline design and vector processors, data parallel architectures, and multiprocessor systems. Rounding out the book, the final chapter explores some important current and emerging trends such as Dataflow, Grid, biology-inspired, and optical computing. More than 220 figures, tables, and equations illustrate the concepts presented. Based on the author's more than thirty years of teaching and research, Advanced Computer Architectures endows you with the tools necessary to reach the limits of existing technology, and ultimately, to break them.

Fluid Mechanics of Environmental Interfaces (Paperback, 2nd edition): Sajjan G. Shiva Fluid Mechanics of Environmental Interfaces (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Sajjan G. Shiva; Edited by Carlo Gualtieri, agutin T. Mihailovic
R2,282 Discovery Miles 22 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Environmental Fluid Mechanics (EFM) studies the motion of air and water at several different scales, the fate and transport of species carried along by these fluids, and the interactions among those flows and geological, biological, and engineered systems. EFM emerged some decades ago as a response to the need for tools to study problems of flow and transport in rivers, estuaries, lakes, groundwater and the atmosphere; it is a topic of increasing importance for decision makers, engineers, and researchers alike. The second edition of the successful textbook "Fluid Mechanics of Environmental Interfaces" is still aimed at providing a comprehensive overview of fluid mechanical processes occurring at the different interfaces existing in the realm of EFM, such as the air-water interface, the air-land interface, the water-sediment interface, the surface water-groundwater interface, the water-vegetation interface, and the water-biological systems interface. Across any of these interfaces mass, momentum, and heat are exchanged through different fluid mechanical processes over various spatial and temporal scales. In this second edition, the unique feature of this book, considering all the topics from the point of view of the concept of environmental interface, was maintained while the chapters were updated and five new chapters have been added to significantly enlarge the coverage of the subject area. The book starts with a chapter introducing the concept of EFM and its scope, scales, processes and systems. Then, the book is structured in three parts with fifteen chapters. Part one, which is composed of four chapters, covers the processes occurring at the interfaces between the atmosphere and the surface of the land and the seas, including the transport of dust and the dispersion of passive substances within the atmosphere. Part two deals in five chapters with the fluid mechanics at the air-water interface at small scales and sediment-water interface, including the advective diffusion of air bubbles, the hyporheic exchange and the tidal bores. Finally, part three discusses in six chapters the processes at the interfaces between fluids and biotic systems, such as transport processes in the soil-vegetation-lower atmosphere system, turbulence and wind above and within the forest canopy, flow and mass transport in vegetated open channels, transport processes to and from benthic plants and animals and coupling between interacting environmental interfaces. Each chapter has an educational part, which is structured in four sections: a synopsis of the chapter, a list of keywords that the reader should have encountered in the chapter, a list of questions and a list of unsolved problems related to the topics covered by the chapter. The book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in environmental sciences, civil engineering and environmental engineering, (geo)physics, atmospheric science, meteorology, limnology, oceanography, and applied mathematics.

Introduction to Logic Design (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Sajjan G. Shiva Introduction to Logic Design (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Sajjan G. Shiva
R3,458 Discovery Miles 34 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Provides a readily accessible introduction to the analysis and design of digital circuits at a logic instead of electronics level. Second Edition features a new and improved arrangement of chapters, a balance of theoretical and practical implementation aspects and in-text examples in each chapter, 21 experiments using standard TTL type of ICs, updated end-of-chapter problems with answers to selected problems (answers provided in a Solutions Manual for Instructors only), and more.

Computer Organization, Design, and Architecture, Fifth Edition (Hardcover, 5th edition): Sajjan G. Shiva Computer Organization, Design, and Architecture, Fifth Edition (Hardcover, 5th edition)
Sajjan G. Shiva
R3,770 Discovery Miles 37 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Suitable for a one- or two-semester undergraduate or beginning graduate course in computer science and computer engineering, Computer Organization, Design, and Architecture, Fifth Edition presents the operating principles, capabilities, and limitations of digital computers to enable the development of complex yet efficient systems. With 11 new sections and four revised sections, this edition takes students through a solid, up-to-date exploration of single- and multiple-processor systems, embedded architectures, and performance evaluation. See What's New in the Fifth Edition Expanded coverage of embedded systems, mobile processors, and cloud computing Material for the "Architecture and Organization" part of the 2013 IEEE/ACM Draft Curricula for Computer Science and Engineering Updated commercial machine architecture examples The backbone of the book is a description of the complete design of a simple but complete hypothetical computer. The author then details the architectural features of contemporary computer systems (selected from Intel, MIPS, ARM, Motorola, Cray and various microcontrollers, etc.) as enhancements to the structure of the simple computer. He also introduces performance enhancements and advanced architectures including networks, distributed systems, GRIDs, and cloud computing. Computer organization deals with providing just enough details on the operation of the computer system for sophisticated users and programmers. Often, books on digital systems' architecture fall into four categories: logic design, computer organization, hardware design, and system architecture. This book captures the important attributes of these four categories to present a comprehensive text that includes pertinent hardware, software, and system aspects.
