A William Somerset Maugham Encyclopedia (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Samuel Rogal A William Somerset Maugham Encyclopedia (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Samuel Rogal
R2,565 Discovery Miles 25 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

William Somerset Maugham was one of the most popular and successful British writers of his time. From October 1897, when he completed his medical education at St. Thomas's Hospital in London, until his death in December 1965, Maugham wrote twenty novels, filled nine volumes with his short stories, wrote thirty-one plays, and published seven volumes of prose nonfiction. His writings reflect the tensions of the Boer War, World War I, and World War II; the lavishness of the highest levels of British and American society during the first six decades of the 20th century; the glamor of Hollywood, Paris, New York, San Francisco, and London; and the romance of China, Malaya, Borneo, and India. His popularity brought him prosperity. At a 1962 auction, 35 of his paintings sold for nearly $1.5 million; bequests in his will totaled $280,000; his royalties during the last ten years of his life averaged $50,000 per year; and his Riviera estate, purchased in 1927 for $48,000, sold for $730,000 in 1967. This reference book is a guide to Maugham's fascinating life and career. The volume begins with a brief discussion of the importance of Maugham's life and work, followed by a detailed chronology of important biographical and literary events. Through several hundred alphabetically arranged entries, the encyclopedia overviews Maugham's drama, fiction, and prose nonfiction; his family; the persons whom he knew and with whom he associated; the places where he lived and to which he journeyed, particularly the cities and villages that he inserted into his works; and the historical, cultural, social, and political issues that governed his life and career. Each entry closes with a brief bibliography, and the volume includes a selected bibliography of critical studies.

A Companion to the Characters in the Fiction and Drama of W. Somerset Maugham (Hardcover, Annotated Ed): Samuel Rogal A Companion to the Characters in the Fiction and Drama of W. Somerset Maugham (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Samuel Rogal
R2,590 Discovery Miles 25 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The characters in the fiction and drama of W. Somerset Maugham accurately reflect English society from the end of the Victorian age through the early years of World War II. Maugham based his characters on real people whom he observed and analyzed, and his characters transcend the themes and settings of his fictional worlds. This volume lists and descibes each and every character mentioned in Maugham's fiction and drama, including living, dead, human, animal, imaginary, historical, named, and unnamed inhabitants of his works. Through his voluminous writings, W. Somerset Maugham recreated the age in which he lived. The characters in his fiction and drama accurately reflect English society from the end of the Victorian era through the early years of World War II. There exists little doubt that the strength of Maugham's works stems from his rich characterizations. When he peopled his imaginary worlds, he based his characters on real persons whom he observed and analyzed, both from a respectable distance and a not always respectable intimacy; then he recast them upon the page and the stage. This reference sets down in alphabetical order each character included in Maugham's stories, novels, and plays. Included are imaginary, historical, human, animal, named, unnamed, living, and dead characters from all of his works. Each entry indicates the work in which the character appears and provides a description of the character in relation to the work as a whole. As far as possible, the descriptions capture the substance and tone of Maugham's own words. An introductory essay discusses the importance of Maugham's characters to his literary art, while a bibliography lists editions consulted and secondary sources of additional information.

Samuel Rogal
R2,154 Discovery Miles 21 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The only sourcebook that provides information necessary to make "Gospel Hymns Nos. 1 to 6 Complete" a useful research tool and an aid to the study of popular culture in the United States during the last half of the 19th century. For the first time, students and scholars will have access, in a single source, to biographical, historical, and bibliographical data concerning the writers of the hymn texts, the composers of the hymn tunes, and the various routes by which the hymns found their way onto the pages of that large collection of gospel and traditional hymnody. DEGREES"Gospel Hymns Nos. 1 to 6 Complete" contains 739 songs gathered from a series of six earlier published works.

The data in this volume will add to the breadth and depth of "Gospel Hymns Nos. 1 to 6 Complete" and thus, for the first time, identify the significance of its contributions to the history of American culture. A strong introduction establishes the historical significance of the collection of gospel hymns and songs. The entries for both the authors of the words and the composers of the music are arranged alphabetically, followed by the dates of birth and death (if known), a biographical sketch, and references to the number of the hymn, its title, first line, and accompanying tune. Dates of composition and initial publication are included where possible.

Samuel Rogal
R2,161 Discovery Miles 21 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume offers to scholars of 18th-century social, economic, and cultural history an annotated listing of more than a thousand titles written at the time on agricultural theory, experimentation, and practice. Arranged into 26 topical sections, the titles pertain to subjects ranging from accounts and wages to cattle, chemistry, gardening, horticulture, grains, grasses, manures, fertilizers, plants, population, land surveys, trees, and wool. Along with basic bibliographical information, many entries provide biographical information on the author and background information on the title. An introductory essay provides an overview of the literature about agriculture and of agriculture, showing one more way in which writers portrayed British and American life from the restoration of Charles II to the death of George III.

By providing access to a wealth of primary material, the book will enable scholars to pursue a neglected area of research. Within topical sections, entries, including both serials and books, are arranged alphabetically by author or title. Cross-references and subject and author indexes provide access to titles that fall into more than one subject area. The bibliographical information given includes reprint editions and, when available, the original sales prices, in shillings, thereby enabling scholars to determine the distribution and popularity of a title.

Samuel Rogal
R2,159 Discovery Miles 21 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The sheer quantity of volumes pertaining to medicine and health published in Great Britain from 1660 to 1800 attests to George Macaulay Trevelyan's claim that the medical profession was moving out of the dark ages into the light of science. Thus this bibliography of more than 2,000 entries surveys the publication of medical tracts, treatises, narratives, guides, and references published in Great Britain during one of the most significant periods in the history of science in the Western world. Coverage is thorough and representative, identifying both the principal practitioners and theorists of the period and their areas of study and interest. The work is organized into twenty-four topical sections. Annotations provide brief information about the writer. The work also includes subject and name indexes. The volume will provide a useful reference for historians of medicine and for scholars whose research carries them into the social and scientific aspects of life in eighteenth-century Britain.

A Chronological Outline of American Literature (Hardcover): Samuel Rogal A Chronological Outline of American Literature (Hardcover)
Samuel Rogal
R2,583 Discovery Miles 25 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first book to examine the literary history of the United States in terms of the chronological occurrence of significant events and activities. This comprehensive volume lists the dates of birth and death of literary figures, important historical facts, and the authors and titles of works published for each year, from Colonial times to the present. The compiler's introduction offers an interesting and informative discussion of how, from little more than a list of author's titles, and events, we may observe a year in the history of a nation, through the political, scientific, and social developments that fired the imaginations of America's writers, and fed the appetites of a growing reading public.
