The Moonstone (Paperback, Reissue): Wilkie Collins The Moonstone (Paperback, Reissue)
Wilkie Collins; Introduction by Sandra Kemp; Notes by Sandra Kemp
R270 R248 Discovery Miles 2 480 Save R22 (8%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

‘When you looked down into the stone, you looked into a yellow deep that drew your eyes into it so that they saw nothing else’

The Moonstone, a yellow diamond looted from an Indian temple and believed to bring bad luck to its owner, is bequeathed to Rachel Verinder on her eighteenth birthday. That very night the priceless stone is stolen again and when Sergeant Cuff is brought in to investigate the crime, he soon realizes that no one in Rachel’s household is above suspicion. Hailed by T. S. Eliot as ‘the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels’, The Moonstone is a marvellously taut and intricate tale of mystery, in which facts and memory can prove treacherous and not everyone is as they first appear.

Sandra Kemp’s introduction examines The Moonstone as a work of Victorian sensation fiction and an early example of the detective genre, and discusses the technique of multiple narrators, the role of opium, and Collins’s sources and autobiographical references.

Writings on Writing (Paperback): Rudyard Kipling Writings on Writing (Paperback)
Rudyard Kipling; Edited by Sandra Kemp, Lisa Lewis
R1,187 Discovery Miles 11 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Unlike his contemporaries Virginia Woolf and Henry James, Kipling always denied he was a critic. But his letters, speeches, and stories are full of comments on writing and writers. This collection, including many formerly unpublished private letters and papers, details Kipling's response to the commercialisation of literature and the emerging role of the writer as celebrity in the turbulent literary world of the 1890s and beyond. They reveal a mind intensely concerned with questions of literary value, with language and imagination, with truth, realism, and romanticism. Kipling's fame made him a significant spokesperson for important segments of the reading public - the soldiers, engineers, and functionaries central to Britain's imperial expansion. He profoundly influenced English literary language and our perception of English national character. This book offers access to the private and public history of a writer whose continuing influence is still a matter of fierce controversy.

Feminisms (Paperback): Sandra Kemp, Judith Squires Feminisms (Paperback)
Sandra Kemp, Judith Squires
R1,583 Discovery Miles 15 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

`A feminist is a woman who does not allow anyone to think in her place.' Michele Le Doeuff

Spanning nearly two decades (1980-1996), the six sections of this reader investigate the debates which have most characterized feminist theory to date.

Including articles such as `Pornography and Fantasy', `The Body and Cinema', `Nature as Female', and `A Manifesto for Cyborgs', the extracts in Feminisms explore thoughts on sexuality as a domain of exploration, the visual representation of women, what being a feminist means, and why feminists are increasingly involved in political struggles to negotiate the context and meaning of technological development. With writing by bell hooks, Alice Jardine, and Andrea Dworkin, this multi-cultural Oxford Reader reflects the dynamic nature of feminist debates and the genuine diversity within current feminist theory.

Futures (Hardcover, 1): Sandra Kemp, Jenny Andersson Futures (Hardcover, 1)
Sandra Kemp, Jenny Andersson
R3,878 Discovery Miles 38 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Futures examines the relevance of futures studies to literary studies. It demonstrates how the growing interest in futures thinking is opening up multidisciplinary conversations and initiatives, examining historical and contemporary forms of futures knowledge, the methodologies and technologies of futures expertise, and the role played by different institutions on legitimising, deploying, and controlling anticipatory practices. Bringing together emerging perspectives on the future from diverse disciplinary perspectives including critical theory, design, anthropology, sociology, politics, and history, this book places the provocation of power at the heart of the book through an investigation of futures as both objects of science and objects of the human imagination, creativity, and will. A multidisciplinary team of contributors challenge and debate the varied ways in which futures are conjured and constructed, exploring issues as diverse as the utopian imagination, history and philosophy, literary and political manifestos, artefacts and design fictions, and forms of technological and financial forecasting, big data, climate modelling, and scenarios. The book positions the future as a question of power, of representations and counter-representations, and forms of struggle over future imaginaries. Forms of futures-making depend on complex processes of envisioning and embodiment. Each chapter investigates the critical vocabularies, genres, and representational methods - narrative, quantitative, visual, and material - of futures-making as deeply contested fields in cultural and social life.

John Lockwood Kipling - Arts and Crafts in the Punjab and London (Hardcover): Julius Bryant, Susan Weber John Lockwood Kipling - Arts and Crafts in the Punjab and London (Hardcover)
Julius Bryant, Susan Weber; Contributions by Catherine Arburthnott, Barbara Bryant, Julius Bryant, …
R1,721 Discovery Miles 17 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) started his career as an architectural sculptor at the South Kensington Museum (today the Victoria and Albert Museum). Much of his life, however, was spent in British India, where his son Rudyard was born. He taught at the Bombay School of Art and later was appointed principal of the new Mayo School of Art (today Pakistan's National College of Art and Design) as well as curator of its museum in Lahore. Over several years, Kipling toured the northern provinces of India, documenting the processes of local craftsmen, a cultural preservation project that provides a unique record of 19th-century Indian craft customs. This is the first book to explore the full spectrum of artistic, pedagogical, and archival achievements of this fascinating man of letters, demonstrating the sincerity of his work as an artist, teacher, administrator, and activist. Published in association with Bard Graduate Center Exhibition Schedule: Victoria and Albert Museum, London (01/14/17-04/02/17) Bard Graduate Center, New York (09/15/17-01/07/18)
