Sex and gender are delicate and nuanced issues for all of us and can be intimidating topics to teach. This practical, empathetic book aims to dispel some of the uncertainties that many teachers have and empower them to lead inclusive, age-appropriate lessons in primary and secondary schools. Taking an approach that celebrates the individual identity of all learners, and underpinned by an awareness of the complexity of language around these topics, this book offers a careful evaluation of the 2020 Relationship and Sex Education policy for schools in England, and how schools can offer intelligent, socially responsible, sex education that goes beyond simply meeting statutory requirements. The Plateau Experience (Paperback): Scott Buckler The Plateau Experience (Paperback)
Scott Buckler
R1,221 Discovery Miles 12 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) was a leading psychologist whose hierarchy of needs has resonated throughout various disciplines. The pinnacle of Maslow's hierarchy was self-actualisation, characterised by the peak experience. However there are a series of definitional, theoretical and methodological issues related to the hierarchy and self-actualisation. Maslow specifically refuted his own theory, instead suggesting that research should be directed towards self-transcendence as characterised by the plateau experience. To date, the plateau experience has remained obscure. This book explores the problematic nature of self- actualisation and the relationship between peak experiences and flow, before progressing to analyse Maslow's composite musings about the plateau experience. From this, a number of defining characteristics are identified, which subsequently inform the development of a psychometric, the Plateau Experience measure (or PLEX). The PLEX has demonstrated secure psychometric properties and is offered as a resource to investigate the plateau experience further.

Wing Chun Kuen (Paperback): Scott Buckler Wing Chun Kuen (Paperback)
Scott Buckler
R1,980 Discovery Miles 19 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Wing Chun is a pragmatic combat system which retains its fighting heritage. However this fighting heritage is of questionable origin. Indeed why did Wing Chun develop? Furthermore although the style has developed exponentially, what actually motivates practitioners to train? This is the first academically researched book into Wing Chun comparing the past and present. The book rewrites the traditional Wing Chun history, providing a more reasoned and informative account for the style's development. Central to the book is the concept of transformation: transformation of the style from the past to the present, and the transformatory effect of training on the individual. Specifically the book explores - The 'myth' of the Southern Shaolin Temple - The link between the Triads and Wing Chun - The identity of the founder of Wing Chun - The philosophy integral to Wing Chun - The psychological benefits of training - The differences between Wing Chun practitioners and other martial artists. The book is written predominantly for an academic audience, although equally, any reader interested in an informed discussion of Wing Chun's history, philosophy and psychology.
