Triple bill of World War Two dramas. 'Everyman's War' (2009) is an
American drama based on the personal wartime experiences of
director Thad Smith's father. Don Smith (Cole Carson), a young
sergeant in the 94th Infantry Division, finds himself unarmed and
wounded on the frontline of the Battle of the Bulge, the largest
and bloodiest battle involving American forces in the entire war.
As the Allies advance through the snow-packed, densely-forested
mountains of Ardennes, Don's sweetheart Dorine (Lauren Bair) waits
at home in Oregon, desperate for news. 'Anonyma: The Downfall of
Berlin' (2008) is a German drama set in Berlin in the final days of
the war. The events of the film are based on the real diary of an
anonymous woman who lived through the liberation of Berlin by
Soviet troops in 1945, suffering shockingly brutal treatment by the
city's captors. Living in the basement of her bombed-out apartment
building with a handful of similarly destitute neighbours, the
woman - known only as 'Anonyma' (Nina Foss) - endures repeated rape
by Russian soldiers, and tries to wrestle a modicum of control over
her destiny by using sex as a tool for survival, forging an uneasy
sexual alliance with Russian leader Major Andrei Rybkin (Yevgeni
Sidikhin). Brad Haynes directs the Australian drama 'Broken Sun'
(2008). In 1944, a group of Japanese soldiers held in a P.O.W. camp
deep in the Australian outback make an escape attempt. One young
soldier, Masaru (Shingo Usami), ends up hiding in the remote
hilltop farm of reclusive farmer Jack (Jai Koutrae), a World War
One veteran who never recovered from the traumas he experienced as
a soldier. Despite their differences and mutual suspicions, it soon
becomes evident that the two men share the understanding that war
is not simply a question of good versus evil but a complex set of
rules by which each of them is duty-bound to abide.

Bosnia and Hercegovina emerged in the wake of the Second World War
as a melting pot for the cultures that had determined the history
of the South Slavs since the middle ages. Catholic, Orthodox, and
Muslim all shared in and contributed to the political and cultural
life of Yugoslavia's most diverse republic.
In 1992, this life was shattered as separatist militias brought war
to Bosnia and Hercegovina. What is the religious heritage that
drives the warring factions and how does it relate to the
nationalist aspirations of many of the participants? From diverse
academic and philosophical perspectives, the works of Jean Bethke
Elshtain, James Turner Johnson, Michael Sells, John Kelsay, and G.
Scott Davis will inform not just scholars of ethics, politics and
religion, but everyone concerned with the prospects for justice in
the post-Cold War world.
Hydroelectricity is the world's largest-and cleanest-source of
renewable -energy. But despite lively interest in renewables
generally, there is an information vacuum about the smallest
version of the technology dubbed "the simplest, most reliable and
least expensive way to generate power off grid." Highly illustrated
and practical, Microhydro is the first complete book on the topic
in a decade. Covering both AC and DC systems, it covers principles,
design and site considerations, equipment options, and legal,
environmental, and economic factors. Scott Davis has decades of
experience operating, installing, designing, selling, and teaching
about microhydro technology. An award-winner in the field, he
currently works as a system designer and retailer with an
alternative energy company for whom he has authored an on-line
microhydro course.
Supplementary education consists of private instruction that
complements and sometimes 'shadows' formal school content.
Providers range from informal and part-time tutors to highly
institutionalized, multi-national corporate franchises. This
phenomenon is growing worldwide and has many potential impacts on
formal education systems. This volume is the first multi-national
examination of this topic and includes 'big picture' analyses to
comparatively explain the intensity, authority and policy contexts
of supplementary education. Quantitative and qualitative case
studies of countries with high and low intensity forms of
supplementary education are detailed. The chapters aim to deepen
comparative and interdisciplinary knowledge on the impact of these
educational markets on formal school systems, and inform future
research and policy on supplementary education.

Anne Rice's uniquely gothic, sensuous, and existential approach
redefined the modern vampire mythology. Shaped by personal
tragedies, critical successes and failures, and a fervent
rediscovery of her Catholic roots, Rice has penned over 27 novels
from supernatural to historical tomes, erotica and religious
themes. But Anne Rice's life is just as interesting as the tales
she spins. This expanded collector's version includes several
special extras including a pictorial tour of Rice's beloved New
Orleans, a brief overview of the origins of the vampire myth, and
an illustrated bibliography.
This edition of the SAGES Manual of Hernia Surgery aligns with the
current version of the new SAGES University MASTERS Program Hernia
Surgery pathway. This manual serves as a curriculum for
participants in the MASTERS Program as well as a modern text on
hernia surgery for all learners. Hernia surgery is one of the
fastest developing fields in general surgery today. There have been
rapid advancements in hernia techniques in recent years, making
most prior texts on the subject obsolete. These advancements
involve significant evolution in both the techniques and strategies
for hernia repairs, as well as the tools used to achieve these
means. This text thoroughly addresses the multiple component
separation techniques and options for locations of mesh repairs. It
also discusses the revolution of hernia repair being facilitated by
robotic surgery, which allows increased access to minimally
invasive techniques for surgeons and thus increased access to
minimally invasive surgical repairs for patients. This manual will
be a valuable resource for interested surgeons to understand the
variety of potential approaches to individual hernias, and to
individually tailor the care of the hernia patient.
Most contemporary philosophers would call themselves naturalists,
yet there is little consensus on what naturalism entails. Long
signifying the notion that science should inform philosophy,
debates over naturalism often hinge on how broadly or narrowly the
terms nature and science are defined. The founding figures of
American Pragmatism-C. S. Peirce (1839-1914), William James
(1842-1910), and John Dewey (1859-1952)-developed a distinctive
variety of naturalism by rejecting reductive materialism and
instead emphasizing social practices. Owing to this philosophical
lineage, pragmatism has made original and insightful contributions
to the study of religion as well as to political theory. In
Pragmatism and Naturalism, distinguished scholars examine
pragmatism's distinctive form of nonreductive naturalism and
consider its merits for the study of religion, democratic theory,
and as a general philosophical orientation. Nancy Frankenberry,
Philip Kitcher, Wayne Proudfoot, Jeffrey Stout, and others evaluate
the contribution pragmatism can make to a viable naturalism,
explore what distinguishes pragmatic naturalism from other
naturalisms on offer, and address the pertinence of pragmatic
naturalism to methodological issues in the study of religion. In
parts dedicated to historical pragmatists, pragmatism in the
philosophy and the study of religion, and pragmatism and democracy,
they display the enduring power and contemporary relevance of
pragmatic naturalism.
Canals reached their zenith in the eighteenth century during the
Industrial Revolution, before the arrival of the railways usurped
their position, whereupon a number of them fell into disrepair and
disuse. For many years forgotten, canals and waterways have enjoyed
an enormous resurgence in popularity as the recent leisure industry
has placed them once more at the forefront of a lively community.
This fascinating book delves into the murkiest criminal cases to
occur or be associated with the canals and waterways of Britain,
including many high-profile murders, and considering other crimes
such as pick-pocketing, robberies, drunkenness and assaults. Also
looking at the use of canal crime in film and literature, this
illustrated history offers a chilling glimpse into the criminal
past.
