Arising from the street corners and underground clubs, Rebel Music:
Resistance through Hip Hop and Punk, challenges standardized
schooling and argues for equity, peace, and justice. Rebel Music is
an important, one-of-a-kind book that takes readers through fun,
radical, educational chapters examining Hip Hop and Punk songs,
with each section addressing a particular social issue. Rebel Music
values the experiences found in both movements as cultural capital
that is de-valued in the current oppressive, standard, test-driven,
rule-bound, and corporate schooling experience, making youth "just
another brick in the wall." This collection is a "rebel yell" to
administrators, teachers, parents, police, politicians, and
counsellors who demonize Hip Hop and Punk to listen up and respect
youth culture. Finally, Rebel Music is a celebration of radical
voices and an organizing tool for those who use music to challenge
oppression.
How to Draw is for artists, architects and designers. It is useful
to the novice, the student and the professional. You will learn how
to draw any object or environment from your imagination, starting
with the most basic perspective drawing skills. Early chapters
explain how to draw accurate perspective grids and ellipses that in
later chapters provide the foundation for more complex forms. The
research and design processes used to generate visual concepts are
demonstrated, making it much easier for you to draw things
never-before-seen! Best of all, more than 25 pages can be scanned
via a smartphone or tablet using the new Design Studio Press app,
which link to video tutorials for that section of the book! With a
combined 26 years of teaching experience, Scott Robertson and
Thomas Bertling bring you the lessons and techniques they have used
to help thousands of their students become professional artists and
designers. This book is indispensable for anyone who wants to
learn, or teaches others, how to draw.

world landscapes. Packed with useful and fascinating design tips,

Old Sailors loved nothing better than vying with one another at sea
or in harbour to recognise a ship or boat on the horizon. It was
sometimes an important life-saving talent to have in battle. Modern
boat enthusiasts, including yachtsmen and fishermen, still like to
indulge in this ancient skill. There have been many thousands of
water vessels developed within the last three and a half thousand
years, from the simple wooden log or dug-out to the huge
sophisticated ships of Brunel and other nineteenth century
designers. This is the realisation of author's intention to give
readers a simple, quick reference book, illustrating 110 of these
old ships and boats up to the turn of the twentieth century. They
fall into the general categories of Ancient Craft, Sailing Ships,
Small Sailing Boats and Craft and Steam Ships. The result is a
handy book for those many enthusiasts who love the sea and would
like to know more about these old and interesting vessels.

This book is about the fundamentals of light, shadow and
reflectivity; the focus is firmly on helping to improve visual
understanding of the world around and on techniques for
representing that world. Rendering is the next step after drawing
to communicate ideas more clearly. Building on what Scott Robertson
and Thomas Bertling wrote about in How To Draw: Drawing and
Sketching Objects and Environments from Your Imagination, this book
shares everything the two experts know about how to render light,
shadow and reflective surfaces. This book is divided into two major
sections: the first explains the physics of light and shadow. One
will learn how to construct proper shadows in perspective and how
to apply the correct values to those surfaces. The second section
focuses on the physics of reflectivity and how to render a wide
range of materials utilizing this knowledge. Throughout the book,
two icons appear that indicate either observation or action. This
means the page or section is about observing reality or taking
action by applying the knowledge and following the steps in
creating your own work. Similar to our previous book, How To Draw,
this book contains links to free online rendering tutorials that
can be accessed via the URL list or through the H2Re app."

Social media platforms are the latest manifestation in a series of
sociotechnical innovations designed to enhance civic engagement,
political participation, and global activism. While many
researchers started out as optimists about the promise of social
media for broadening participation and enhancing civic engagement,
recent events have tempered that optimism. As this book goes to
press, Facebook is fighting a battle over the massive disclosure of
user information during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign, social
analytics company Cambridge Analytica is being revealed as a major
player in micro profiling voters in that same election, bots and
fake news factories are undermining democratic discourse via social
media worldwide, and the president of the United States is
unnerving the world as a stream-of-consciousness Twitter user. This
book is a foundational review of current research on social media
and civic engagement organized in terms of history, theory,
practice, and challenges. History reviews how researchers and
developers have continuously pushed the envelope to explore
technology enhancements for political and social discourse. Theory
reveals that the use of globally-networked social technologies
touches many fields including political science, sociology,
psychology, media studies, network science, and more. Practice is
examined through studies of political engagement both in democratic
situations and in confrontational situations. Challenges are
identified in order to find ways forward. For better or worse,
social media for civic engagement has come of age. Citizens,
politicians, and activists are utilizing social media in innovative
ways, while bad actors are discovering possibilities for spreading
dissention and undermining trust. We are at a sobering inflection
point, and this book is your foundation for understanding how we
got here and where we are going.

gifted students from the world-renowned Art Center College of
Design in Pasadena, California. Khang Le, Mike Yamada, and Felix
Yoon were guided by their instructor, Scott Robertson, to create
original design solutions for the environments, characters, props,
and vehicles found within "The Skillful Huntsman". The trio's
sketches and full-color renderings thoroughly document the creative
process of concept design, revealing a host of intriguing places -
from sci-fi cities to castles - and people - from giants to
royalty. A must for artists, aspiring entertainment designers,
comic aficionados, and anyone interested in the creative process,
"The Skillful Huntsman" offers insight into the mysterious world of
the imagination.
Building model ships from scratch is a fascinating and inexpensive
hobby. One of the oldest crafts, it was performed with the barest
of tools and materials by mariners on the high seas - and also by
prisoners of war in Napoleonic times. This is a sequel to the
author's first book Model Ships From Scratch. Here you are given a
wide variety of interesting facts and instructions including the
old pastime of putting a model ship into a bottle. The different
ways of making the hulls of model ships and boats, together with
rigging, are explained. Throughout the book model plan references
are noted for the different types of ships covered. Packed with
detailed drawings and photographs of many model ships made by the
author, plus close-ups of deck details and fittings, this book is a
comprehensive guide to the craft for both beginners and amateur
modelmakers.
