This book provides a unique Pakistani perspective and understanding
of a region that has not been studied extensively to date.
Pakistan's Frontier Region has been at the forefront of the War on
Terror since 2001. The Federally Administered Tribal Agencies (now
known as merged Tribal Districts) are a critical geostrategic area
for Pakistan. This work highlights key economic, political, and
religious issues in the FATA-KP region in order to identify means
to eradicate ongoing conflicts and integrate the region within
mainstream Pakistani society. This project proposes a series of
phased economic development reforms that can guide FATA's
transition as an integrated territory within the rest of Pakistan.
These reforms can and should encourage dimensions of indigenous
economic practices, women's empowerment, the education system, food
security, subsistence agriculture, and transportation and
communication infrastructure where possible. These improvements can
be implemented in 10+ year plans designed to organize a committed
effort to develop and integrate FATA with the rest of Pakistan.

The second edition of this Handbook provides up-to-date insight
into ground-breaking research on international human resource
issues today. These issues are faced by multinational companies
which can be as small as one person with a computer and Internet
connection or as large as a medium-sized country. Written by the
field's most distinguished researchers, the book will stimulate
thought for new research and provide a glimpse of where we have
been and where we are going. The book explores issues such as the
importance of linking IHRM activities to organizational strategy
and culture; talent management; staffing; performance management;
leadership development; diversity management; international
assignment and mobility issues; and the role of IHRM in the
management of global teams and cross-border joint ventures, mergers
and acquisitions. The Handbook illustrates that IHRM research is
both theoretically deep and eclectic. Drawing upon a range of
paradigms and perspectives this compendium will prove invaluable

The vast reduction in size and power consumption of CMOS circuitry
has led to a large research effort based around the vision of
wireless sensor networks. The proposed networks will be comprised
of thousands of small wireless nodes that operate in a multi-hop
fashion, replacing long transmission distances with many low power,
low cost wireless devices. The result will be the creation of an
intelligent environment responding to its inhabitants and ambient
conditions. Wireless devices currently being designed and built for
use in such environments typically run on batteries. However, as
the networks increase in number and the devices decrease in size,
the replacement of depleted batteries will not be practical. The
cost of replacing batteries in a few devices that make up a small
network about once per year is modest. However, the cost of
replacing thousands of devices in a single building annually, some
of which are in areas difficult to access, is simply not practical.
Another approach would be to use a battery that is large enough to
last the entire lifetime of the wireless sensor device. However, a
battery large enough to last the lifetime of the device would
dominate the overall system size and cost, and thus is not very
attractive. Alternative methods of powering the devices that will
make up the wireless networks are desperately needed.
The vast reduction in size and power consumption of CMOS circuitry
has led to a large research effort based around the vision of
ubiquitous networks of wireless communication nodes. The wireless
devices are usually designed to run on batteries. However, as the
networks increase in number and the devices decrease in size, the
replacement of depleted batteries is not practical. Furthermore, a
battery that is large enough to last the lifetime of the device
would dominate the overall system size, and thus is not very
attractive. There is clearly a need to explore alternative methods
of powering these small communication nodes. This book, therefore,
focuses on potential "ambient" sources of power that can be
scavenged or harvested and subsequently used to run low power
electronics and wireless transceivers.
A wide range of potential power sources are briefly explored. Based
on a comparison of these many potential sources, commonly occurring
vibrations was chosen as an attractive, and little explored, power
source. Models for different types of power converters using both
electrostatic and piezoelectric conversion mechanisms have been
developed. The models have been validated by testing prototypes
driven at vibrations similar to those found in many industrial and
commercial building environments. Finally, integration of a
piezoelectric generator, power circuit, and custom design radio
transceiver is demonstrated.
Power sources are becoming a bottleneck to the widespread
deployment of wireless sensor networks. This work reviews many
potential alternative sources of ambient power that can be
scavenged. Vibration to electricity converters are explored in
great detail, and based onstudies and experiments, are shown to be
an attractive power source in many applications.
Energy Scavenging for Wireless Sensor Networks with Special Focus
on Vibrations will be of interest to researchers and professionals
in the areas of wireless electronics, smart structures and MEMS as
well as power electronics.
This book was first published in Hindi under the title Hindi
Alochana mein Canon-Nirman ki Prakriya in 2015. It was acclaimed as
one of the first critical studies of the processes of canonization
(pratimanikaran) in Hindi. Indeed, the word 'canon' was used by the
author to ask a new set of questions about the development of
languages of criticism in Hindi, moving beyond the available
vocabulary of man (worth), mulya (value), pratiman (epitome), and
manak (evaluation). In the process, the theological roots of canon
formation were shown to be foundational in the making of the Hindi
critical lexicon and canon. This book presents a systematic but
critical account of the beginnings, development and history of the
process of canonization in Hindi via such exemplary figures as
George Grierson, Garcin de Tassy, Ramchandra Shukla, Hazari Prasad
Dwivedi, Ram Vilas Sharma, Muktibodh, Namwar Singh, Nirmal Verma,
and Vijaydev Narayan Sahi. It proposes an intellectual history of
Hindi criticism in the twentieth century, which today faces the
challenges of a decanonization move in the form of feminist and
Dalit thought.

The morels is one of the most delicious and costliest wild edible
mushrooms of the world. During the last century significant
advances have been made in the study of morel biology with the sole
aim of artificial cultivation. But all efforts to domesticate them
have not been wholly fruitful. The book is an attempt to compile
all the relevant information on morel biology so that more interest
in morel research is stimulated ultimately paving the way for
cultivation. The monograph contains 14 chapters; each chapter is
devoted to and provides original information and observations on
various aspects of morel biology. It begins with an overview of
morel biology followed by the life cycle pattern, classical and
molecular systematic treatment, ecology, physiology, mycorrhizal
and rhizomorphospheric relationships, nutritive and nutraceutical
profile, observations and ethno-mycological and sociobiological
impact, cytology of ascus development and the culinary aspects of
morel consumption. The objective is to offer a detailed account of
different aspects of morel biology and biodiversity. All the
chapters are documented with tables, figures and original color
photographs.
The Incomparable Festival (Musaddas Tahniyat-e-Jashn-e-Benazir) by
Mir Yar Ali (whose pen name was Jan Sahib) is a little known but
sumptuous masterpiece of Indo-Islamic literary culture, presented
here for the first time in English translation. The long poem,
written in rhyming sestet stanzas, is about the royal festival
popularly called jashn-e-benazir(the incomparable festival),
inaugurated in 1866 by the Nawab Kalb-e-Ali Khan (r. 1865-87) with
the aim of promoting art, culture and trade in his kingdom at
Rampur in northern India. The task of commemorating the sights and
wonders of the festival was given to the hugely popular writer of
rekhti verse, the tart and playful sub-genre of the ghazal,
reflecting popular women's speech, of which Jan Sahib is one of the
last practitioners. Structured as an ode to the nawab, the poem is
a world-album depicting various classes on the cusp of social
upheaval. They include the elite, distinguished artists and
commoners, brought together at the festivities, blurring the
distinction between poetry, history and biography, and between
poetic convention and social description. The book is a veritable
archive of the legendary khayal singers, percussionists, and
instrumentalists, courtesans, boy-dancers, poets, storytellers
(dastango) and reciters of elegies (marsiyago). But, above all, the
poem gives voice to the 'lowest' denizens of the marketplace by
bringing to light their culinary tastes, artisanal products,
religious rituals and beliefs, and savoury idioms, thereby focusing
on identities of caste and gender in early modern society. This
Penguin Classics edition will be of interest not just to the Urdu
and Hindi literary historian, but to specialists and readers
interested in the histories of music, dance, and the performative
arts, as well as scholars of gender and sexuality in South Asia.
Lovers of Urdu poetry will find in it a forgotten masterpiece
