Most of us have felt it: that unexplained prompting in our hearts to stop and pray for a friend, a loved one, or even a stranger. Sometimes we dismiss the feeling as a stray thought about friends, families, or situations. Sometimes we are even awakened from a deep sleep with an even deeper need to go to God in prayer.
Where do those urges come from? Are they truly from God? And do those prayers have any effect on the one we're praying for?
In Called To Pray, Linda Evans Shepherd shares dozens of inspiring true stories of people who have felt God's call to pray - and the astonishing results of those impromptu prayers. For those who wonder if prayer has any effect or doubt that God communicates with us personally, this heart-stirring book will amaze, inspire, and equip them to respond to those holy promptings.

THE TIMES AUDIOBOOK OF THE YEAR 'The finest book ever written on
nature and landscape in Britain' Guardian In this masterpiece of
nature writing, beautifully narrated by Oscar-winning actor Tilda
Swinton, Nan Shepherd describes her journeys into the Cairngorm
mountains of Scotland. There she encounters a world that can be
breathtakingly beautiful at times and shockingly harsh at others.
Her intense, poetic prose explores and records the rocks, rivers,
creatures and hidden aspects of this remarkable landscape. Shepherd
spent a lifetime in search of the 'essential nature' of the
Cairngorms; her quest led her to write this classic meditation on
the magnificence of mountains, and on our imaginative relationship
with the wild world around us. Composed during the Second World
War, the manuscript of The Living Mountain lay untouched for more
than thirty years before it was finally published.

This book introduces readers to the historical, performative, and
cultural context of pansori, a traditional Korean oral
story-singing art. Written by a scholar-practitioner of the form,
this study is structured in three parts and begins by introducing
readers to the technical, aesthetic, and theoretical components of
pansori, as well as the synthesis of vocal and percussive elements
that stage the narrative. It moves on to reflect on the historical
contexts of pansori, alongside Korea’s transformation from Joseon
monarchy to modern statehood. It argues that with colonial
annexation came modernist influences that Korean dramatists and
audiences used to create new genres of performance, using the
common thread of pansori. The book’s third part explores the
interplay of preservation and innovation, beginning in the post-war
period and continuing with developments in the 20th and 21st
centuries that coincide with Korea’s imprint on cultural
globalization. Along with Korea’s growth as a world economic
center, a growing enthusiasm for Korean culture around the world
has increased the transmission and visibility of pansori. This
study argues that tradition and innovation are not as divergent as
they are sometimes imagined to be and that tradition is the force
that enables innovation. Drawing on Chan E. Park’s ethnographic
work and performance practice, this book interweaves expert
knowledge of both the textual and performative aspects of pansori,
rendering legible this dramatic tradition.

Caroline Corsham as she seeks justice for a murdered woman whom
London society would rather forget . . . London, 1782. Desperate
for her politician husband to return home from France, Caroline
'Caro' Corsham is already in a state of anxiety when she finds a
well-dressed woman mortally wounded in the bowers of the Vauxhall
Pleasure Gardens. The Bow Street constables are swift to act, until
they discover that the deceased woman was a highly paid prostitute,
at which point they cease to care entirely. But Caro has motives of
her own for wanting to see justice done, and so sets out to solve
the crime herself. Enlisting the help of thieftaker Peregrine
Child, their inquiry delves into the hidden corners of Georgian
society, a world of artifice, deception and secret lives. But with
many gentlemen refusing to speak about their dealings with the dead
woman, and Caro's own reputation under threat, finding the killer
will be harder, and more treacherous, than she can know . . .
