This is the story of a young boy and his piano. The young boy is an
autistic child with other problems as well, but has a great ability
and passion for music. As he grows older life deals him many
pleasures and, at the same time, as many problems. Success mingles
with loneliness, while optimism and depression alternate between
periods of mental aberration. The story is told by him as he sees
the world through his eyes, which is different from the way that a
normal person might see it. In following his point of view and by
witnessing his reactions it is hoped that the reader might become
more aware and develop a deeper understanding of people whom we
consider to be mentally abnormal and function on a different level.
"Beyond this Place" consists of a collection of essays involving
episodes of the past from a different world which seems so remote
today. It includes memories of the author's childhood and some
experiences that he encountered during his medical training and
career. There is also a historical perspective of people and events
that have affected the lives of those who came after them,
including diverse subjects ranging from the Bible to Jewish pirates
and false Messiahs.
This is a historical novel spanning the entire twentieth century.
The writer has blended the life of one man and his family with
events which occur concurrently. History affects all our lives, and
this book focuses on how one particular family fared in the face of
world events. The story commences in South Africa, spreads through
neighbouring countries and the United States before returning to
South Africa. A nation divided wreaks havoc upon its people as the
steam-roller of history rumbles by like a whirlwind.
According to the New Oxford American Dictionary a mosaic is a
picture or a pattern produced by arranging together the small
colored pieces of hard material, such as stone, tile or glass. The
smaller pieces are an integral part of the whole. Numerous art
forms exist in mosaic patterns. Many cultures have practiced this
art over the last few thousand years. Mosaics have been found
amongst the antiquities of ancient Mesopotamia. They existed in
ancient Greece and Rome, and they are still being made today. One
might refer to a colorful and differing pattern, such as a bird's
plumage as a mosaic of feathers of different colors. In a similar
manner one could refer to the tales told in this book as parts of a
literary mosaic.
All tiles in this mosaic are based on events and situations that
have occurred. Truth is stranger than fiction and as variegated as
the tiles of a mosaic.

"The Other Room" is a sequel to "Portraits in a Gallery" where the
stories of a number of portraits hanging on the walls in a gallery
were discussed. This is not unlike "Pictures at an Exhibition," a
collection of descriptive musical pieces by Modest Moussorgsky on
viewing his friend's art works at an exhibition. "The Other Room"
is the adjacent room to the main gallery where further portraits
are being displayed. Each portrait is given a life of its own. It
is hoped that for those who cannot see the actual portraits the
description of the subjects will be even more complete than the
viewing of them.

The "Stone-Cutter" is the story of a very successful
sculptor-artist, with little formal education, who shuns publicity
and lives the life of a hermit. A young man who happens to find him
working on a hill-top, becomes awe-struck by his artistic ability
and is drawn into the world of art. His goal is to follow in the
footsteps of the master. The two strike up a student-teacher
relationship which develops into a binding friendship. However, the
teacher has a wandering spirit, and disappears somewhere in Africa,
while the student, bent upon finding him, follows him there in an
attempt to bring him back to civilization. The results of this
search can only be discovered by reading this book.
