Eine verständliche, konzise und immer flüssige Einführung in die Algebra, die insbesondere wegen ihrer sorgfältigen didaktischen Aufbereitung bei vielen Studierenden beliebt ist.  Zwei Schwerpunkte werden miteinander kombiniert: Zum einen geht es um die Theorie fundamentaler algebraischer Objekte wie z. B. Gruppen, Ringe und Körper, also von Begriffsbildungen, die weit über die Algebra hinaus in der Mathematik von Bedeutung sind. Den zweiten Schwerpunkt bildet die Galois-Theorie mit ihren Anwendungen. Ausgangspunkt dieser Theorie ist das Problem der Auflösung algebraischer Gleichungen, ein Problem, das nach mannigfachen vergeblichen Versuchen zum Auffinden von Lösungsformeln für Gleichungen höheren Grades seine umfassende Klärung durch die brillanten Ideen von E. Galois fand.  Das Buch bietet neben zahlreichen Übungsaufgaben (mit Lösungshinweisen) sowie motivierenden Kapiteleinführungen auch Ausblicke auf neuere Entwicklungen. Auch selten im Lehrbuch behandelte Themen wie Resultanten, Diskriminanten, Kummer-Theorie und Witt-Vektoren werden angesprochen. Die berühmten Formeln aus dem 16. Jahrhundert zur Auflösung von Gleichungen dritten und vierten Grades werden ausführlich erläutert und in den Rahmen der Galois-Theorie eingeordnet.  In der vorliegenden Neuauflage wurde unter dem Aspekt Lernkontrolle und Prüfungsvorbereitung erstmals eine textbegleitende Anleitung zur eigenständigen Überprüfung des Lernerfolgs und zur Einstimmung auf Prüfungssituationen realisiert. Nicht zuletzt im Hinblick auf diese Neuerung wurde der gesamte Text optimiert und nochmals einer gründlichen Revision unterzogen.  Ein klares, modernes und inhaltsreiches Lehrbuch, das für das Studium der Algebra unentbehrlich ist.

The aim of this work is to offer a concise and self-contained 'lecture-style' introduction to the theory of classical rigid geometry established by John Tate, together with the formal algebraic geometry approach launched by Michel Raynaud. These Lectures are now viewed commonly as an ideal means of learning advanced rigid geometry, regardless of the reader's level of background. Despite its parsimonious style, the presentation illustrates a number of key facts even more extensively than any other previous work.

Since then, arithmeticians and algebraic geometers have applied the theory of Neron models with great success. Quite recently, new developments in arithmetic algebraic geometry have prompted a desire to understand more about Neron models, and even to go back to the basics of their construction. The authors have taken this as their incentive to present a comprehensive treatment of Neron models. This volume of the renowned "Ergebnisse" series provides a detailed demonstration of the construction of Neron models from the point of view of Grothendieck's algebraic geometry. In the second part of the book the relationship between Neron models and the relative Picard functor in the case of Jacobian varieties is explained. The authors helpfully remind the reader of some important standard techniques of algebraic geometry. A special chapter surveys the theory of the Picard functor.

Algebraic Geometry is a fascinating branch of Mathematics that combines methods from both Algebra and Geometry. It transcends the limited scope of pure Algebra by means of geometric construction principles. Putting forward this idea, Grothendieck revolutionized Algebraic Geometry in the late 1950s by inventing schemes. Schemes now also play an important role in Algebraic Number Theory, a field that used to be far away from Geometry. The new point of view paved the way for spectacular progress, such as the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem by Wiles and Taylor. This book explains the scheme-theoretic approach to Algebraic Geometry for non-experts, while more advanced readers can use it to broaden their view on the subject. A separate part presents the necessary prerequisites from Commutative Algebra, thereby providing an accessible and self-contained introduction to advanced Algebraic Geometry. Every chapter of the book is preceded by a motivating introduction with an informal discussion of its contents and background. Typical examples, and an abundance of exercises illustrate each section. Therefore the book is an excellent companion for self-studying or for complementing skills that have already been acquired. It can just as well serve as a convenient source for (reading) course material and, in any case, as supplementary literature. The present edition is a critical revision of the earlier text.

The material presented here can be divided into two parts. The first, sometimes referred to as abstract algebra, is concerned with the general theory of algebraic objects such as groups, rings, and fields, hence, with topics that are also basic for a number of other domains in mathematics. The second centers around Galois theory and its applications. Historically, this theory originated from the problem of studying algebraic equations, a problem that, after various unsuccessful attempts to determine solution formulas in higher degrees, found its complete clarification through the brilliant ideas of E. Galois. The study of algebraic equations has served as a motivating terrain for a large part of abstract algebra, and according to this, algebraic equations are visible as a guiding thread throughout the book. To underline this point, an introduction to the history of algebraic equations is included. The entire book is self-contained, up to a few prerequisites from linear algebra. It covers most topics of current algebra courses and is enriched by several optional sections that complement the standard program or, in some cases, provide a first view on nearby areas that are more advanced. Every chapter begins with an introductory section on "Background and Overview," motivating the material that follows and discussing its highlights on an informal level. Furthermore, each section ends with a list of specially adapted exercises, some of them with solution proposals in the appendix. The present English edition is a translation and critical revision of the eighth German edition of the Algebra book by the author. The book appeared for the first time in 1993 and, in later years, was complemented by adding a variety of related topics. At the same time it was modified and polished to keep its contents up to date.

Techniken der Linearen Algebra spielen heute in nahezu allen Gebieten der aktuellen Mathematik eine wichtige Rolle. Demgemass hat sich die Lineare Algebra zu Recht zu einer der tragenden Saulen mathematischer Studien an Universitaten entwickelt. Dieses bewahrte Lehrbuch, das nun in einer uberarbeiteten sechsten Auflage vorliegt, reprasentiert in idealer Weise das Pensum einer zweisemestrigen Anfangervorlesung uber Lineare Algebra, in deren Zentrum Vektorraume, lineare Abbildungen und Matrizen stehen. Behandelt werden insbesondere lineare Gleichungssysteme und deren Loesung mittels des Gaussschen Eliminationsverfahrens, weiter die Eigen- und Normalformentheorie fur lineare Selbstabbildungen von Vektorraumen, sowie Skalarprodukte im Rahmen euklidischer und unitarer Vektorraume, einschliesslich der Hauptachsentransformation und des Sylvesterschen Tragheitssatzes. Als Besonderheit wurde die Elementarteilertheorie mit aufgenommen, welche eine sehr effektive Handhabung und explizite Bestimmung von Normalformen quadratischer Matrizen gestattet. In seiner textlichen Darstellung verfolgt das Buch mehrere Zielsetzungen zugleich. Zunachst liefert es eine klare, systematische und mathematisch strenge, aber dennoch behutsame Entwicklung der Linearen Algebra und ihrer Resultate, zusammen mit den ublichen theoretischen Begriffsbildungen, die diese Theorie so universell einsatzfahig machen. Sodann findet sich zu Beginn eines jeden Kapitels ein informeller Abschnitt mit dem Titel UEberblick und Hintergrund als Motivation, der auch die geometrische Anschauung mit einbezieht, wenn immer dies moeglich ist. Wie gewohnt enthalt das Buch zu jeder thematischen Einheit eine Auswahl an speziell abgestimmten UEbungsaufgaben. Zudem wird im Anhang ein neuartiger Aufgabentrainer vorgestellt, der das Bearbeiten der Aufgaben erleichtert und systematisiert. An einer groesseren Anzahl von Beispielen wird demonstriert, wie man mittels Aufgabentrainer zu optimalen Loesungen gelangt. Damit eignet sich das Werk bestens zur Prufungsvorbereitung und zum Selbststudium.
