In Mediengesellschaften folgt die soziale Konstruktion von Solidaritat neuartigen Bedingungen und bringt neue, vor allem kampagnenformig geplante und spektakular inszenierte politische Kommunikationsformen mit sich. Ausgehend von theoretisch-konzeptionellen Uberlegungen zum Solidaritatsbegriff, werden an zahlreichen Beispielen der neunziger Jahre Formen, Inhalte und soziale Tragerschaft massenmedialer Solidaritatskampagnen analysiert. Solidaritatskampagnen entstehen, so die zentrale These, als innovative Mobilisierungsstrategien in den Uberschneidungszonen von Okonomie, Politik, Kultur und Moral. Der strukturellen Entgrenzung offentlicher Kommunikation entspricht eine Entgrenzung der sozial-raumlichen Ausweitung von Solidargrenzen in weltgesellschaftliche Dimensionen. Zugleich wird der normative Kern massenmedialer Solidaritat zunehmend im Sinne eines allseits konsensfahigen Minimalismus ausgedunnt."

Drawing upon a common conceptual framework of political webcampaigning the book offers theoretical reflections on Internet-based campaign politics. The contributors provide a comparative overview on the use of the Internet as a campaigning instrument by diverse intermediary political actors. Taking the empirical findings about how the internet is used into consideration, the book discusses the impact of political webcampaigning on (transnational) democracy and the transformation of public spheres.
