What Future for Human Rights in a Non-Western World? (Paperback): Simon Bennett, Eadaoin O'Brien What Future for Human Rights in a Non-Western World? (Paperback)
Simon Bennett, Eadaoin O'Brien
R862 Discovery Miles 8 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The countries of the global north and west that have enjoyed hegemonic preponderance in international affairs over the last two centuries are seeing their relative influence on the world stage decline in favour of rising powers of other regions. As the ability of the global north and west to project normative standards with regards to social organisation, international relations and the role of the state is waning, what emerging norms might guide future trajectories for global society? As human rights is a highly politicised and contentious area of discourse and practice, what future might there be for human rights in a non-western world? The London Debates 2011 workshop sought to bring together established academics and early career researchers from a variety of disciplines to reflect upon possible futures for world order and the implications for human rights. In this edited volume, nuanced analysis covers the ongoing debate on the universality of human rights, the outlook for human rights in an Islamic context, the role of civil society in the future of human rights, and human rights in China. The London Debates are a series of discussion workshops convened by the School of Advanced Study that bring together outstanding early career researchers to consider a subject of broad concern within the humanities and social sciences. The workshops are attended by a small group of invited senior academics and early-career researchers - in their final year of doctoral study or up to ten years beyond the award of their doctorate - selected by an international open competition. The Debates include lectures, plenary seminars and small-group discussions. The School of Advanced Study at the University of London is the UK's national centre for the facilitation and promotion of research in the humanities and social sciences. The School brings together the specialised scholarship and resources of ten prestigious research institutes to offer academic opportunities, facilities and stimulation across a wide range of subjects for the benefit of the national and international scholarly community.

Systems-thinking for Safety - A short introduction to the theory and practice of systems-thinking. (Paperback, New edition):... Systems-thinking for Safety - A short introduction to the theory and practice of systems-thinking. (Paperback, New edition)
Simon Bennett
R891 Discovery Miles 8 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A manifesto for the systems-thinking-informed approach to incident and accident investigation, this accessible text is aimed at experts and generalists. A Glossary of Terms explains key concepts. The premise is both unoriginal and original. Unoriginal, because it stands on the shoulders of systems-thinking pioneers - Barry Turner, Bruno Latour, Charles Perrow, Erik Hollnagel, Diane Vaughan and other luminaries. Original, because it is populist: The Systems-thinking for Safety series shows how theoretical insights can help make the world a safer place. Potentially, the series as a whole, and this manifesto text, have agency. True to its mission to affect change, the book uses case studies to demonstrate how systems-thinking can help stakeholders learn from incidents, accidents and near-misses. The case studies of, for example, the Piper Alpha and Deepwater Horizon offshore disasters, the Lac-Megantic rail disaster, the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, the United States Navy collisions and the Grenfell Tower fire, demonstrate the universal applicability of systems-thinking. The manifesto argues that the systems-thinking informed approach to incident, accident and near-miss investigation, while resource intensive and effortful, produces tangible safety benefits and, by ensuring that "right is done", delivers justice and closure.

How Pilots Live - An Examination of the Lifestyle of Commercial Pilots (Paperback, New edition): Simon Bennett How Pilots Live - An Examination of the Lifestyle of Commercial Pilots (Paperback, New edition)
Simon Bennett
R1,534 Discovery Miles 15 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book paints a detailed picture of the commercial pilot lifestyle, from the struggle to pay for training to time spent down route to thoughts of retirement. Once a glamorous occupation, commercial flying is today more of a job than a vocation with many pilots working the maximum permissible hours for increasingly meagre rewards under evermore stressful conditions. Pilots talk candidly about acute and chronic fatigue, short-notice roster changes that leave them insufficiently rested, noisy and poorly serviced down-route hotels, long daily commutes to work, indebtedness, fear of losing their pilot's licence, industry volatility, dread of lay-off or redundancy, the quality and agendas of airline managers, the impact of these and other stressors on family life and where they think the aviation industry is going. Despite these privations pilots remain enthusiastic - a testament to their professionalism and love of flying.

In the more than seven years since the Object Management Group (OMG) adopted the Unified Modeling Language (UML), UML has established itself as the de facto industry standard for modeling software systemsIn 2001 OMG put together a task force to revise UML Version 1.0. In March of 2003, UML Version 2.0 was finalized and rolled out to the 35 major companies participating in the adoption effort and made available to the public. This book provides a step-by-step guide to the notation and use of UML, one of the most widely used, object-oriented notation systems/programming languages in existence. The outline demonstrates the use of the techniques and notation of UML through case studies in systems analysis, showing the student clearly how UML is used in all kinds of practical situations. This revised edition will discuss the new infrastructure of the latest UML Version 2.0, and will include new examples, review questions, and notations.

Simon Bennett, Ray Farmer, Steve McRobb
R2,101 Discovery Miles 21 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The fourth edition of Object- Oriented Systems Analysis and Design has been revised and updated to reflect the most up-to-date approaches to information systems development. Still a best-seller in its field, Bennett's, McRobb's and Farmer's text remains a key teaching resource for Systems Analysis and Design courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. The book provides a clear, practical framework for development that uses all the major techniques from UML 2.2. It follows an iterative and incremental approach based on the industry-standard Unified Process, placing systems analysis and design in the context of the whole systems lifestyle. Structured in four parts, the first provides the background to information systems analysis and design and to object-orientation. The second part focuses on the activities of requirements gathering and systems analysis, as well as the basic notation of UML. Part three covers the activities of systems architecture and design, and UML notation for object design, and the book concludes with the implementation of systems and the issues of how the systems life cycle is organized and how reusable components can be developed.

R288 Discovery Miles 2 880 Ships in 4 - 6 working days

"Dynamics of Skill Acquisition: A Constraints-Led Approach" provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of the constraints-led perspective, a recognized theory in motor learning and control. It is the first text to outline the development of a conceptual model of coordination and control within a multidisciplinary framework, capturing the various interlocking scales of analysis (e.g., neural, behavioral, psychological) and the many subsystems (e.g., perceptual and movement) involved in producing behavior. A conceptual model of coordination and control is important not just for designing learning environments, but it is also important for ensuring that learners gain positive experiences when acquiring motor skills.

"Dynamics of Skill Acquisition" provides the foundational concepts, methodological tools, and language to design positive learning experiences that facilitate movement coordination and control across various dynamic environments that require a high degree of precision of movements, from playing golf to performing surgery. The text also incorporates several learning features to assist readers:

-Chapter outlines list major topics and subtopics.

-Self-test questions at the end of each chapter provide opportunities for class discussion, individual review and reflection, and talking points for independent studies.

-Spotlight on Research highlight boxes provide more detailed descriptions of important studies to help readers understand how interacting constraints shape movement behavior.

-Key Concept boxes in each chapter remind students of the chapters' important concepts.

-Realistic case studies in the final chapter help both students and practitioners visiualize the contraints-led approach in practice. Each case study expands on the topics addressed in part II and encourages both reflection and application of knowledge to provide a solution.

-Additional readings at the end of each chapter allow students, movement scientists, and practitioners to expand their learning.

-Glossary terms are boldfaced in text and defined in a glossary at the end of the book.

-Chapter summaries offer a compilation of important concepts.Practitioners and students will appreciate the applied focus of "Dynamics of Skill Acquisition," which outlines a model of human movement with specific constraints-led approach strategies that address skill acquisition across a variety of professions, including teaching, coaching, and rehabilitation. By learning both the theoretical origins and applications for implementing a constraints-led approach to movement skill acquisition, readers will gain insight into how the informed organization of learning and rehabilitation environments produces more effective and efficient use of practice and therapy time.

"Dynamics of Skill Acquisition" is divided into two parts. Part I provides an overview of the key theoretical contributions to the study of skill acquisition and introduces the constraints-led approach focusing on the implications of Newell's (1986) model as a template for understanding how motor skills are acquired. Part II discusses the relationship between the theoretical concepts introduced in part I and the practical issues facing learners and movement practitioners. It provides readers with practical implications of the constraints-led approach and includes hypothetical case studies, which contain examples of the constraints-led model in action. In particular, the constraints-led approach shifts practitioners' perspectives on how to do the following:

-Deal with individual differences

-Organize practice to optimize learning

-Use verbal instructions and feedback

-Direct learners' attention during skill observationWith the increased interest in the role of constraints to shape motor learning, "Dynamics of Skill Acquisition "provides a timely analysis of the constraints-led approach, helping readers understand how coordination patterns are assembled, controlled, and acquired. No other book presents the theoretical roots and development to the constraints-led perspective and uses a blend of both dynamical systems and ecological approaches to skill acquisition to provide application strategies for all people with an interest in movement coordination and control.
