The issue of Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is firmly in the
public spotlight internationally and in the UK, but just how well
is it understood? To date, many CSE-related services have been
developed in reaction to high profile cases rather than being
designed more strategically. This much-needed book breaks new
ground by considering how psychosocial, feminist and
geo-environmental theories, amongst others, can improve practice
understanding and interventions. Edited by one of the leading
scholars in the field, this is an essential text for students and
those planning strategic interventions and practice activities in
social, youth and therapeutic work with young people, as it
supports understanding of how CSE arises and how to challenge the
nature of the abuse.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th
Information Retrieval Societies Conference, AIRS 2014, held in
Kuching, Malaysia, in December 2014. The 42 full papers were
carefully reviewed and selected from 110 submissions. Seven tracks
were the focus of the AIR 2014 and they were IR models and
theories; IR evaluation, user study and interactive IR; web IR,
scalability and IR in social media; multimedia IR; natural language
processing for IR; machine learning and data mining for IR and IR
applications.
Information Retrieval (IR) has concentrated on the development of
information management systems to support user retrieval from large
collections of homogeneous textual material. A variety of
approaches have been tried and tested with varying degrees of
success over many decades of research. Hypertext (HT) systems, on
the other hand, provide a retrieval paradigm based on browsing
through a structured information space, following pre-defined
connections between information fragments until an information need
is satisfied, or appears to be. Information Retrieval and Hypertext
addresses the confluence of the areas of IR and HT and explores the
work done to date in applying techniques from one area, to the
other leading to the development of hypertext information
retrieval' (HIR) systems. An important aspect of the work in IR/HT
and in any user-centred information system is the emergence of
multimedia information and such multimedia information is treated
as an integral information type in this text. The contributed
chapters cover the development of integrated hypertext information
retrieval models, and the application of IR and HT techniques in
hypertext construction and the approaches that can be taken in
searching HIR systems. These chapters are complemented by two
overview chapters covering, respectively, information retrieval and
hypertext research and developments. Information Retrieval and
Hypertext is important as it is the first text to directly address
the combined searching/browsing paradigm of information discovery
which is becoming so important in modern computing environments. It
will be of interest to researchers and professionals working in a
range of areas related to information discovery.

We hope that all attendees had a wonderful stay in Ireland and that
their visits were enjoyable and rewarding. There were 125 papers in
total submitted to the CIVR2004 conference and each was reviewed by
at least three independent reviewers. We are grateful to the 64
members of the technical programme committee and the 29 other rev-
wers who completed these reviews and allowed us to put together a
very strong technical programme.
This book presents new and authoritative evidence about change at
the workplace, using it to cast light on recent debates about the
future of work. The basic questions it poses are whether, and how,
British workplaces are responding to the challenge of change, and
what are the implications of change both for managers and
employees. Using up-to-date information from 2000 workplaces, it
provides a realistic basis for envisaging the changes through the
first decade of the 21st century. It is accessible to a wide
audience of policy makers, managers, professionals, students and
academics.

This volume contains the texts of papers presented at the Second
Irish Conference on Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science,
held at Dublin City University in September 1989. This Conference
has now become the major annual forum in Ireland for the
presentation and discussion of current research work in the
multi-disciplinary area of Artificial Intelligence. Papers in this
volume have been divided into seven sections which vary in their
subject matter. Image processing, human-computer interaction,
planning, applications and theory of expert systems, learn ing,
speech, and natural language processing and semantics repre sents
as broad a spectrum of AI and AI-related topics as can be found in
current AI research. This harmonises quite well with the aims and
scope of the AICS'89 conference which were to provide a forum for
industry and academic research to discuss AI and AI-related topics
and we were delighted that such a broad coverage of topics was
achieved. Despite the broad nature, however, none of the papers are
primarily review articles; each paper presents new research results
within its own specific area."
Photography, one of the most influential inventions of the
nineteenth century, has been shaped by Canadian innovators. Among
them are two Quebec men who have flown beneath the radar in studies
of the history of photography: the Smeaton brothers. Out of the
Studio documents the life, oeuvre, and achievement of Charles
Smeaton and his younger brother, John. Launched by the opening of
their "photographic gallery" in 1861, they developed a reputation
in Quebec for images of contemporaneous people, places, and events
taken in challenging outdoor settings. Smeaton pictures of the
aftermath of the Great Fire of Quebec in 1866 helped bring an
understanding of the disaster to an international audience; images
featuring the gold mining industry were displayed at the Exposition
universelle in Paris the following year. When Charles travelled to
Europe in 1866, he accomplished a feat previously thought
impossible, taking the first successful photographs in the Roman
catacombs. John moved to Montreal in 1869, where he worked for
newspapers and developed techniques for the direct transfer of
photographs into print without the necessity of intermediary
engravings. Out of the Studio is the first comprehensive
biographical study detailing the innovation and imagination of the
Smeaton brothers and their legacy of images across two continents.

This definitive textbook provides accessible information on best
practice for assessing the needs and strengths of vulnerable
children and their families. It explores the challenges that
practitioners face routinely - with suggestions as to how to
address them - as well as the established areas for assessment, of
children's developmental needs, parenting ability and motivation,
and socio-economic factors. This new edition has been extended
substantially to include recent practice, policy and theoretical
developments, such as understanding the lived experience of
children, young people, and family members. It also considers
children's neurological development, assessing parental capacity to
change, early help assessments, emerging areas of practice such as
child sexual exploitation, and working with asylum-seeking and
trafficked children. Crucially, this updated edition takes a
broader approach in offering relevant information to a range of
professionals working with vulnerable children. The importance of
inter-professional working is emphasised throughout.
1737 was a year in which Voltaire was in great danger from his
political enemies and in place of literary work, threw himself into
Newtonian metaphysics, focussing on an "Essai sur la nature du feu,
et sur sa propagation" for the prestigious Academie des sciences
annual essay prize. Clarifying his 'systeme de morale' on human
happiness and liberty, Voltaire wrote seven "Discours en vers sur
l'homme" and was also inspired to write "Le Songe de Platon", a
conte philosophique contesting Plato's social ideas. He also began
the tragedy most acclaimed during his lifetime, the
classically-inspired "Merope".

Rudolf Carnap's entire theory of Language structure "came to me,"
he reports, "like a vision during a sleepless night in January
1931, when I was ill." This theory appeared in The Logical Syntax
of Language (1934). Carnap argued that many philosophical
controversies really depend upon whether a particular language form
should be used. This leads him to his famous "Principle of
tolerance" by which everyone is free to mix and match the rules of
his language and therefore his logic in any way he wishes. In this
way, philosophical issues become reduced to a discussion of
syntactical properties, plus reasons of practical convenience for
preferring one form of language to another. In a tour de force of
precise reasoning, Carnap also indicated how two model languages
could be constructed. This is one of three books which Open Court
is making available in paperback reprint in its Open Court Classics
series. The other two are Carnap's The Logical Structure of the
World and Schlick's General Theory of Knowledge.
Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the
1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly
expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable,
high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
