As the National Numeracy Strategy (NNS) extends into secondary
schools this book for trainee and practicing mathematics teachers
provides practical guidance on developing effective strategies for
the teaching of numeracy at KS3 and 4 based on the DfEE
requirements.
The teaching and learning approaches suggested in the NNS are
analyzed and explained using case-study examples from secondary
schools. Many of these ideas were developed by teacher inquiry
groups in the Raising Standards in Numeracy project.
The book includes examples of pupils' work; lesson plans and pupil
activities; ideas for using ICT to enhance mathematics; teacher
guidance on both teaching and assessment; and ideas for developing
numeracy across the curriculum.
This book offers an introduction to the subject of numeracy
accompanied by lesson ideas and practical guidance. It will prove a
valuable resource for all trainee and new mathematics teachers.
Becoming a Successful Teacher of Maths is a practical guide for newly qualified teachers of secondary mathematics. It develops the essential core knowledge, skills and understanding demanded by the new DfEE requirements for courses of initial teacher training. It is based on research findings relating to the organisation and management of maths classrooms, teaching approaches, assessment and the common misconceptions which often hinder pupils' progress in key areas of the National Curriculum. Theoretical principles are exemplified through case-study material. Suggestions for school-based activities are made. While being a practical 'how to' guide for beginning teachers, it also offers critical insights for more experience teachers reflecting on their practice.

the body reacts to good and bad foods, this book will give you the
answers. It demonstrates how to rid the body of dangerous toxins and
the effect that this will have, as well as exploring how things like

It is always a pleasure and a very great honor for an author to be
invited to write a regular column for a respected publication with
a wide and loyal readership. Such is The Banner, the denominational
magazine of the Christian Reformed Church. When erstwhile
editor-in-chief John Suk told me he was looking for some material
that was both humorous and poignant, I jumped at the opportunity. I
hoped to provide my readers with stories that would make them
chuckle over their morning coffee and also give them something to
think about as they went about their daily business. Eight years
have gone by now since the column's inception, so it seemed to me
that it was high time to gather the stories together between two
covers. So here it is - a collection of topics ranging from
warbling church mice to operatic moose calls, and from chaos on the
farm to wild roosters running amok in the Dutch countryside. But
life has its darker side, too. You will come across poignant
stories such as the one about a grieving linguistics professor, or
a dog who sniffs out his owner's cancer. There is also a longer
piece at the end of the book about my own daughter's brush with
death. It is my hope that you will take comfort in the knowledge
that the tears will eventually be wiped away, and life at last will
truly be ever-laughing. I have changed the names of some of the
characters to protect the privacy of the individuals who populate
these true stories - with the notable exception of Obadiah Kelly,
who is already so famous that it's useless to try to hide his
identity. I'll bet you didn't know that his name is on your lips
almost every day. Read on! There is much to learn.
This is a collection of articles from Sonia Jones's humor column
called "Life Ever Laughing," orinally published in "The Banner"
magazine. The topics range from warbling church mice to operatic
moose calls, and from chaos on the farm to wild roosters running
amok in the Dutch countryside. But life also has its darker side.
There are some poignant stories about a grieving linguistics
professor, a plucky Russian expatriate in Paris, and a dog that
sniffs out his owner's cancer. There is also a longer piece at the
end of the book about the author's own struggle to save her baby's
life. What critics say about other books by the same author: "[She]
has a born teacher's eye for the well-chosen example... Indeed, the
best things in ["It All Began With Daisy"] are its author's good
humor and genuine charity of spirit." -- Robert Coleman, New York
Times "A colorful parade of well-drawn characters and comic-tragic
events. -- Jennifer Henderson, Financial Post
Nutritional information is notoriously confusing, contradictory,
complicated or impractical. Sonia's book takes us through the
values and contents of a huge variety of food & vitamins,
clearly and logically, to show what happens to our bodies when we
treat them well, or how we damage them by eating badly. This book
is for everyone, including vegetarians and dieters, with a terrific
range of delicious recipes as well. Sonia Jones is a qualified
Naturopath, Dietary Therapist and Reflexologist, with years of
experience in Australia, and running her own clinics in the UK and
Malta, She now has a first-class clinic in a beautiful part of
Panama, and she specialises in chronic illness and holistic diet
programs.
When Sonia and Gordon Jones left New York City for a quiet life on
a farm in Nova Scotia, they never dreamed they'd end up creating a
multi-million dollar yogurt industry. But when Daisy gave too much
milk for the family, Sonia started making yogurt for a local health
food store. The product was so popular that it got shelf space in
all the supermarket chains in the Maritime provinces. Sonia Jones
wrote a book called "It All Began With Daisy" which was published
by E.P. Dutton, adopted by the Literary Guild of America, condensed
by the Reader's Digest and translated into many languages. But
competition from a successful small business is not always welcomed
by big business interests, so Goliath rose up to challenge Daisy.
At this point the action diverges from the Old Testament narrative,
where David uses his own ingenuity to overcome Goliath. In this
true story the federal government requires that the slingshot be
disallowed in favor of regulation swords for all parties to the
conflict. The poignancy of the betrayal of Citizen Daisy by her own
government is palpable. Yet this is not just an attack on the
co-conspiracy of big government and big business. The story of
Daisy and Goliath, like all good parables, crystallizes the issues
and provides us with hope for a better future.
Assessment can be the hardest part of any teacher's job. It is easy
to fall into the trap of seeing it all as unnecessary paperwork and
feeling guilty about not having done it properly. This book takes
the practical ideas laid out in Marking and Assessment and develops
them to show teachers how to get the most out of assessment for
their students. Assessment can be the hardest part of any teacher's
