This commentary for preaching Matthew, a companion to WJK's successful "Preaching the Gospel of Luke," "Preaching the Gospel of John," and "Preaching the Gospel of Mark," works through every passage of Matthew's Gospel with exegetical insight and a keen sensitivity to the demands of preaching. Stanley P. Saunders' commentary follows the biblical text, divided into passages. After each passage, a number of possibilities are presented for how to preach that text. He includes a wealth of creative and pertinent tips to help preachers apply Matthew's narrative to the lives of today's churchgoers.
This book shares the results of a symposium held to honor the work of Walter Brueggemann and Charles Cousar at Columbia Theological Seminary on the occasion of their retirement. The honorees are of such stature that the authors gathered to honor them share a similar status within the biblical studies guild. Each author and each chapter of the book simultaneously engages the Bible, the church and the world. This 3-part engagement was fundamental to the careers of the honorees. The contributors emulate and even expand on their work. The book also includes responses by Walter Brueggemann and Charles Cousar to the challenges to traditional biblical interpretation represented here.
The letters to the Philippian and Galatian congregations illustrate well the passion and intensity of Paul's writing. Together these letters provide a compelling portrait of a complex original thinker who probably was the most significant missionary of his day, a theologian and social critic of rare power and insight whose legacy continues today to spark heated debate. Yet if we can catch even a little of Paul's vision, we are likely to be transformed. We may find ourselves called, like Paul himself, to a fresh vision of what God is doing in the world and to participation in the crucified body of Christ. Interpretation Bible Studies (IBS) offers solid biblical content in a creative study format. Forged in the tradition of the celebrated Interpretation commentary series, IBS makes the same depth of biblical insight available in a dynamic, flexible, and user-friendly resource. Designed for adults and older youth, IBS can be used in small groups, in church school classes, in large group presentations, or in personal study.
