This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 44th German Conference on Artificial Intelligence, KI 2021, held in September/October 2021. Due to COVID-19 pandemic the conference was held virtually. The 16 full and 4 short papers with one extended abstract were carefully reviewed and selected from 59 submissions. As well-established annual conference series KI is dedicated to research on theory and applications across all methods and topic areas of AI research.

In this book the author argues that the basis of what we consider computer intelligence has algorithmic roots, and he presents this with a holistic view, showing examples and explaining approaches that encompass theoretical computer science and machine learning via engineered algorithmic solutions. Part I of the book introduces the basics. The author starts with a hands-on programming primer for solving combinatorial problems, with an emphasis on recursive solutions. Search has been vital to artificial intelligence from the very beginning as a core technique in problem solving. The authors present a thorough overview of heuristic search with a balance of discussion between theoretical analysis and efficient implementation and application to real-world problems. Current developments in search such as pattern databases and search with efficient use of external memory and parallel processing units on main boards and graphics cards are detailed.

Heuristic search as a problem solving tool is demonstrated in applications for puzzle solving, game playing, constraint satisfaction and machine learning. While no previous familiarity with heuristic search is necessary the reader should have a basic knowledge of algorithms, data structures, and calculus.
